My grandad has some atari controllers that we were able to get working after a little prodding around. I take care of my stuff.

Depends. Is it a basic, first-party controller? It'll last me a lifetime. Is it a gadget-heavy, third-party controller? It'll last me about 3 weeks.

Seriously. For my PS2, I've got two normal controllers that still work to this day. But aside from that I've got like half a dozen wireless controllers, one that has a built-in cooling fan, and a couple other unique ones. They're all broken.

My current PS3 controller has a nagging issue with the triangle button sticking down occasionally, dunno how I'd try to fix it.

My other controller's L2 button is broken slightly as well, so I seem to be the only person on The Escapist who's controllers don't last forever. :/

I've never had a controller really die out on me simply from age and use. Actually, the only ones I can think of that had this issue were N64 controllers.

I have an atari 2600 with two working joysticks, 2 NES with 3 controllers still working (one did die, but that was the dog's fault, little jerk), a SNES with 3 working controllers (got an extra one from my wife, her brother kept the system, but she loves that particular controller), a dreamcast with 3 controllers, a PS1 with 2 controllers (one original without the joysticks, one newer with them), a PS2 with one working controller (never got a second) a Wii with three complete working controllers (never got a fourth) and a PS3 with the original controller.

I've lost 1 NES controller (stupid dog), a generic PS1 controller (bad idea to buy that), 2 Xbox controllers (one just lost, it worked when I lost it, the other died about 2 years after purchase). Oh, and a set of atari paddles (the turny handle ones).

I guess I'm not all that hard on controllers.

n64 controller + mario party on hard mode?

you might as well have a warranty on that thing, it is going to be on fire within a couple days

my 360 controller has lasted since i first got the 360 at launch..and the only reason why my ps2 controllers broke was because the joysticks got clicked so many times the l3/r3 stopped working.
Yeah, thats what burnt out my N64 controllers most of all...
And my PS2's joysticks are beyond shot.
Only problem I have with my 360 controllers, is the left joystick of the one I use all the time, has a huge bite taken out of it.
Definitely because of sprinting in MW2, lol.
tug o war on hard adventure mode? that shit is fucking near impossible as a child, i near bled from the palm with skin burned off beating that event.

yeah unfortunately our gamecube controllers at home literally have bites in them..my little brothers literally bit the rubber off of the joysticks for god knows what reasons..teething perhaps..

I can't really say with my xbox because it's pretty much brand new though, err... since getting Alice: Madness Returns and playing American McGee's Alice on the xbox, it has annoyed me to the point of throwing the controller at the wall/on the floor with a bit of force. It's just a wee bit, erm, "dislocated" now.

On the other hand, the SNES and its two controllers have been around since 198something!

Never have had to replace my Xbox controllers. PS2 controllers though I have gone through many. I think that may be more because I went with the shiny looking offbrand ones because as a kid they looked good. The one that came with the PS2 still works short of a finicky R2 button.

I,ve only had to repair one controller, my dog chewed through the wire of one of my gamecube controllers and I got it to work afterwards.

For me controllers typically last anywhere from 5 months of heavy gaming to 3 years of heavy gaming. Although I've crushed a ps3 controller in half after 3 hours.

But are the PS3 controllers better built, quality wise not ergonomically, than the 360's? Or is there no difference whatsoever.
As an Xbox person, i'm inclined to agree that they are. I've only had one broken controller and that was my brother throwing it at the wall after a nasty session of COD.

My other one i've had since 2005 and it moves forward on its own and all the padding has come off.

I love that controller though, so i'm not switching it.

Pretty damn good. I'm on my original for most of my systems. And in all of those cases, the originals still work, too!

I treat them like I treat the console itself.

I am pretty sure I have calluses on my the centers of my palms because of that bloody game... Also probably because of monkey bars, but meh.
My little brother doesn't have a single PS2 controller that isn't chewed up even a tiny bit. Bloody dogs >.>

Xbox 360 controllers are the only ones who ever poop out. And they poop out around 1 1/2 years for me.

PC controllers generally have really shitty build quality. I play 2D arcade games which require alot of button tapping so a pad will wear out in 3 - 9 months.

My current Gamestation pad is only 4 months old and the RT button has already starting fail due to regulary playing a game that required me to hold the button down. It would be nice if pad manufactuers would put a thick enough metal coating on the rubber membrane like old megadrive pads, I could mash those buttons for years without failing.

Im seriously thinking about buying a pad with mechanical buttons or maybe an arcade stick it will cost me more initially but ild be saving money over the long term.

How do modern console pads hold up for button mashing, not that ild use them since I dont like the D-pads on them.

Also ive heard rumours that the directions on analog sticks on stock 360 pads wear out fast.

My original PS3 SIXAXIS and N64 controllers didn't hold up to well after 2 years. Both was more than likely my fault because both was wore out sticks... heavy thumbed I guess.

Throwing and smashing aside, it's mostly the buttons that seize to be, function wise. From what I read here.
And 360 controller thumbsticks are the weakest link.
