The 360 controller for Windows works well for me and can also be used on my 360 as a second controller, which is nice. Some people complain about lack of deadzone adjustment unless you use third party software so be warned if that sort of thing bothers you.

I generally use it for emulators and indie games. The d-pad on the 360 controller is useless, but I hate using the d-pad for anything as I was raised using digital joysticks. I generally map direction controls to the analogue stick.
Is the deadzone easy to correct? Can I use all the buttons on the 360 controller on every game? (except the guide button)
I recently started using my Xbox controller for Windows for playing Assassin's Creed and I noticed that the triggers didn't work (the bumpers worked, just not the triggers). Other than that it works great for every other game I have. I've even gotten Xpadder so I could play on games that didn't have any joypad support (if you want it, search for an older version, it's become payware recently, but you can still get the older version free).

I used a ps2/n64 to pc adapter on my pc for ages and it was great fun for playing emulators and so forth.

(Reliving the old Tomba 2 days - Fantastic)

How many games does it work on?
A 360 controller will work on almost every console port and "games for windows". Often these games play better with a controller too.

Most(if not all) of these will work with a controller. [http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Games/Pages/Catalog.aspx]

If there's a game that doesn't have gamepad support you can get xpadder or other software too.

Yeah, the Xbox 360 controller is fantastic. Say what you will about the Xbox but Microsoft knows how to make gaming accessories, always has. Also, just fyi, the Xbox 360 wired controller is exactly the same as the one marketed as a PC controller, they are both plug and play USB, so if you see one cheaper than the other then pick it up.

Get a 360 controller with a cable. They are very good.
Do you have one? Had any problems with it? Thats the one I was thinking of getting...
I do indeed, No Problems, and It has uses USB 2.0. Also, Get the one marketed as the Games for Windows Controller, it comes with the driver CD, and you can still use it with a 360.

And you don't even need it, because the controller is plug and play on Windows (after all it's made by Microsoft!)

I hope you're not using that controller for FPS games online...
I don't intend to. Why?
They're much harder because they give you no control and make you stop taking your mouse for granted.

Can't play Devil May Cry 4 without a controller though!
