Pfft, Tyranids, are just a rip off of the zerg. It was my first thought when I saw them (mainly HUNDREDS of them). Zerg came first, zerg are cooler, zerg are evolved, some can fly :D, but most of all, ZERG ARE INFINITE. The only other candidates are Predators, Xenomorphs or Protoss.
The Tyranids were invented in 1990. Starcraft came along in 1998. Trust a guy who's avatar character is a rip-off of Black Mage not to know the difference.

So what's your favorite alien race in all of literature, games, movies, and TV shows?

Mine would definitely have to be the Drej from the movie Titan A.E. They're energy beings that can completely obliterate whole planets with a huge weapon mounted on their mothership. Top that!
What!?....NOT the Goa'uld? ;)

Tyranids.

It's hard to get more badass than light-years-long fleet-tendrils of impossibly evolved hunters who survive the vacuum of space for eons, spew frenzied carnivorous beetles as their main form of ammunition, overwhelm any opposition with clouds of ridiculously potent toxins and unimaginable waves of flying/scuttling/leaping/burrowing creatures, field nightmare monstrosities bigger and harder to kill than any tank, crush the dead (their own as well as the enemy) into slurry for their sustenance, consume every last organic molecule from entire planets in a matter of hours, and leave only dead rocks in their wake -- all under the command of a single, utterly implacable godlike alien hive-mind whose mere presence spirals ships of all races into oblivion and drives mortal minds screaming mad from light years away.

Forget the Borg, let's see the crew of the Enterprise try to take some of THAT shit on.

Fave alien race is SO hard to choose, but it would be probably... Tyranids, from Warhammer 40,000, or Necrons from 40,000, or Eldar from 40,000...

Or the Geth...

Or Aliens (Badass hunting machines from film of same name)

Argh! I cant decide!

Krogan.

They kick ass and have cute toes. Seriously look at Wrex's toes in ME1 armour, you will squee. I also have a Krogan on my team in ME they are a good distraction for when I snipe people in the face.

The Mnggal-Mnggal from Star Wars. It was a specie's/single organism that would kill someone then take over their body. They/it had wiped out entire planets before. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mnggal-Mnggal
Or maybe Zonoma Sekot from Star Wars, but it wasn't really a species. It was a sentient planet WITH A HYPERSPACE DRIVE

I'm not sure they should win the "most cool" award, but I feel there needs to be a shout-out to the carbosilicate amorphs from Schlock Mercenary.

Nigh-invincible, store memories throughout their bodies, can digest just about anything, and usually have a very entertaining sense of humor.

The C'Tan are pretty damn cool.
Don't mind me, just being the inspiration of death for a shit-ton of races.
I don't know if I'd count the C'tan as aliens, so much as they're star-eating gods... Now, the Necron? Yeah, pretty badass. Although, the Nids are better, in my experience. The perfect adapters, and there's an unimaginable number of them. Single fleets can overrun entire sub-sectors, and they're just a microscopic amount of the total race.

The problem with sci-fi is as soon as the most awesome thing comes around, there is always something more awesome around the corner. This also applies to the aliens.

That's why it's hard to put a shiny ribbon of honour on any particular one. But I'm playing Mass Effect right now, so I'll go with the Reapers. The galaxy is their *****.

Vortigaunts definitely take the #1 spot. They're interesting, helpful, and they shoot LIGHTNING from their fingers. Also, they saved Alyx's life twice, which is more than a good thing. Special mention also has to go to the Irkens, who are so completely ridiculous and incompetent that they come full circle and become awesome again. They're also helped by the fact that their highest-profile member, Zim, was pretty much the most gloriously hammy character in all of fiction until Cave Johnson came along to steal that title.

I'm gonna go with Xenomorphs.

...but Saya is also a pretty cool.
Though I bet nobody here knows Saya.
Saya the chriopteran? I wasn't that impressed myself - besides, depending on which storyline you go by she's either a stone ***** or a whiny putz of Shinji Ikari proportions and her only special power is that she can kill monsters by bleeding on them. Chronica from Trigun Maximum is a way more awesome terran alien.

I'm with you 100% on the LV426 xenomorphs though, just as long as they don't need to be naturally-occurring aliens. I don't know if there's a definitive origin story on those bad boys but they only ever made sense to me as a macro-scale biological weapon.

The xenofungus from the old Alpha Centauri game. The fungal stalks were capable of forming a neural network with each other. When pread out over the entire planet, it achieved sentience. At high enough concentrations, it reached a higher plane of existence, easily comparable to godhood.

Dralasites [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dralasite] always interested me, but giant amoebas may not be everyone's idea of cool. Though special mention goes out to the aliens in fallout for showing me no matter how advance you are, you can always be trumped by shotgun.
