I'm not much of an RTS player, I've only ever liked Warhammer 40k: Dark Crusade, and I'm only any good with the Eldar. I love many of their units, but then it's hard not to, since they have such specialized damage that you can't really shun any of them. I guess the Harlequin and the Fire Prism are my favorites though. Harlequin for absolutely demented melee capability and Fire Prism for ridiculous anti-vehile/building badassery.

This is probably one of the scariest moments of a supreme commander game as you wonder who's base is going up in flames..

Um my favorite unit of all my RTS games has to be the Nobz from DoW 2, a group of hardy and vicious orks that revel in smashing the enemy into raspberry jam with a small selection of chain-axes or hammers..
I believe he was quoting Starcraft just there...The original post mentions Ghosts, I seem to remember.

Also, I'm unclear on why chainswords and chain-axes have become so popular. A chainsword is quite literally a chainsaw, only wieldable in 1 hand. The chain-axe is even worse: With no blade, the advantage an axe brings (Using momentum to slide the blade through the enemy) is completely lost: A chainsaw cannot utilize that momentum as well as a sharp edge, not by a long shot. I simply don't understand why these would be any more effective weapons than their simple 'sharp edge' equivalents.

To answer the question posed, however, I would have to go with the Emperor Tank, from Generals: Zero Hour. Not only did it have the ability to upgrade a chaingun turret for easy anti-infantry and anti-air, it came equipped with the powerful speaker tower, which allowed for healing to nearby allies, and was even more powerful than it's smaller counterpart, the Overlord. This tank is the tank other tanks wish they could be.

Well, personally I find that this is the most awesome thing I'd seen in a long time.
Sets fire to shit, and it's influenced by Kiss, what more could you want?
And no matter how they tried to hide it, that game was an RTS. An RTS with interesting roaming and awesome music, granted.

Necron Warriors in DoW.
Once thier fully upgraded they are Legion Incarnate, Of course a wraith or two is needed in case of concealed units XD

Ah yes, thank you for correcting me, I haven't played starcraft so I didn't know they had the missile warning too.. :p

And I think chain weapons are popular simply because they include sharp chains which usually rip flesh asunder, much to 'everyone's' delight..

For me it's the Marine from Starcraft and Starcraft II. Cheap, quick to make, reliable, and their voices aren't grating. Got a problem? Send enough of them in, and eventually you won't!
I agree, when I was playing 1v1 with my friends as Terran and I was playing as zerg I had wiped him out all but one marrine whos last line was (as he was sacraficed in my main base)

"GET SOME"

Respect, to the puny human!

Monkeylord from Supcom. Just because it's a huge spider with a laser. Not always that useful, but it looks cool.

The overlord is cool as well.

But the most useful unit ever is cavalry in the Total war games. Nothing says fuck you as 4 units of Teutonic Knight charging into your enemies flanks.

Dawn of war's Defiler is cool. But saying something from DOW is cheating. That entire universe is based on a board-game. Hence, not VIDYA. (Everything in DOW universe is pretty cool)

Alternative...
Chaos Space Marine Squad from Dawn of War: Chaos Rising. Basic upgrade boosts their stats. The can get a champion who makes them better again. Lastly they can be upgraded to be either amazing ranged soldiers or given chain-axes (a bit like a chainsaw, but in axe form - nasty!) and used as heavy assault troops. The just look awesome as well.
Seconded on this.
These bastards are absolutely OP with the chain axe and plasma pistol upgrade, especially with a Champion attached to them.
I've taken one squad and a Chaos sorcerer on an absolute rampage across the map, started off with 0 zeal, or the Chaos equivalent and landed back at my base with one Chaos Marine dead and enough points to call in Chaos' AoE rape ability.

Those things demolish everything in their path, they're brilliant from the word go, cheaper and more versatile than your average Space Marine counterpart because chain axes make them useful against everything.

yes. just yes. If I had to pick a different unit, though, it'd probably be the Vulcan from TA.

Top this.

3 head-mounted targeting systems, 3 wave-force katanas, 3 legs with a foo that is larger in diamater than an Apocalypse tank, and it can regenerate when subjected to Tesla fire. (The Soviet's primary technology)
Such a shame you only get to use it for 2 missions.

I second (or whichever order it is) the Mammoth Mk2. It was only due to gameplay balancing that it was as "weak" as it was in gameplay. It'd have made Command & Conquer Tiberium Wars better if you could take control over one and used it as territory control.

Elite Mameluke from AoE2. Not cool looking, nor cool sounds, but few have resisted one of my attacks with those.

Command & Conquers Mammoth Mk1&3/Apocalypse/Overlord tank since they're basically the same awesome thing.

And I guess I should list Homeworld's Sajuuk.
