Yeah, I've seen it in team deathmatch games too. One team obliterates the other, then after the round the winning guys all say "gg". No, I do not think it was a good game. It was very one-sided and I did not enjoy it at all. For me a good game is when it's close and preferably unclear who will win until the last moment.

Umm so if I zergling rushed you in Starcraft its ok to gg. But if in CS you kill me with an AK and I have an MP5 thats not ok to gg.

...sigh

you say gg when you are defeated doesnt matter in what terms the victory is

I wouldn't know; the only time I ever use "gg," I'm referring to Guilty Gear. Whenever I'm being a good sport, I just type the whole thing out...it's not like I'm too pressed for time after a game is over to type a sentence.

Man, lovely off-topic.

Of course someone isn't supposed to say 'gg' as the victor.

It's BM.

I guess you apply the same idea here as you do on the sporting field. You shake your opponents hand before the match and always shake their hand after it. It doesn't matter how much animosity there was between you, you always shake their hand. It's just part of what being sportsmanlike is all about. In this same sense, you should say gg possibly as soon as you start and always just before the end of the match whether you win or lose. It's just professional conduct.

This may not necassarily be wha OP was referring to, but after a online match in Halo/COD/L4D most people say good game, but only if it was a close score or a particularly fun match. Rarely have I heard it said after a blowout or when there is someone (On either team) being a complete tool.
Now I dont play PC games anymore since I moved out of my house and my only computer is my laptop used for Music, Internet, School (in that order). But on Xbox Live it is used, from what I can tell, somewhat when whoever says it means it. At least that's how I am.

Most people who don't care about a topic ignore it rather than post in it. Obviously a part of you does care.
I think he wants help, subconsciously, and that drove him to this thread. *GROUP HUG!*

The only online game I play is Team Fortress 2, and I have seen this said frequently by both sides at the end of a game. Usually the games I'm in have been quite closely contested, and so the victor saying good game is not taken as an insult but a compliment.
But that's my two cents, and a rather limited one seeing as I'm basing this of the Tee Eff Two community.

I actually think that when one player CRUSHES another and then says "gg" it is meant to be in an ironic tone, or they are like a few people I know and consider it a good game when they utterly crush their foe.

"gg" stands for "good game", right? Good. Just so we all understand each other.
For me, that's exactly where it's at; all of us understanding each other.

To understand my POV, I speak from the perspective of an avid pool player (yep, that's right, a game out in the real world, with opponents you can see and your "controller" is nothing more than a well balanced stick...unless of course you use a bar cue *shudder*)

/snarky joke

ANYWAY, the point of thing is, if nothing else, to simply congratulate your opponent for playing the game with you, no matter how bad you got your ass kicked, or how much of their ass you just handed back to them...I think part of the fact is that it's hard to communicate inflection through a keyboard; when I win a game of 8 ball by one shot, we'll shake hands and say "good game" to each other, but with a wry smile on our faces and a bit of sarcasm in our voices; we both know it wasn't really a good game, but still, you take that extra five seconds to acknowledge your rivals' skill.

Or, you know, maybe something gets lost in translation, but that's my two cents on the thing.

I'm sure I'll regret starting this thread and I'll get super-flamed for this so knock yourselves out guys. But although I'm sure to get a hail of abuse for even daring to state this no doubt fairly unpopular opinion, along with several accusations along the lines of "emorage", "you've obviously lost a lot of online games lately" etc, does anyone actually agree with me on this point?
Yeah, I'm pretty much having to hold back from flaming you. When I play games, ANY game, I do it for fun. If I beat the crap out of some one in a friendly game, it still was a "good game" because I HAD FUN! That is all there is to it when I said it. I HAD FUN. GOOD GAME. Your rant is assuming that anyone who says is it admitting one person as superior and not the literal meaning of "good" and "game" added together.

Well...they COULD have been arrogantly gloating over their victory ot they may very well have just been displaying good sportsmanship (something that the OP clearly isn't, considering his complaint).

Not everyone who plays an online game is a malicious ************ who will rub every victory in your face (some of us are actually nice people who reletively well controlled egos).

Rants like the one above are proof, as if it were needed, that some people take games far too seriously.

I use Good Game to mean just that; I had a Good Game.

It doesn't matter if I came in 1st, 2nd or whatever... so long as I felt the game went well.

I don't use "gg" when I've been thrashed. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that we were on a game where you had to capture 10 objectives to win. If I had 8 at the end of the game, and most players had around 8-9 as well, I'd call that a good game.

If the other guy gets all 10 and I only have 3, I wouldn't "gg" that game.

I do sometimes gg in games where I have absolutely slaughtered the opposition, but only if I feel like I really had to work to do it. For example, on a FPS; if I spend most of the game on virtually no health because I keep getting into shootouts, but keep winning them, I'd still consider that a good game - I'm constantly under threat, and thus having to work for my victory.

Far more often, I actually try and claim a Moral Victory post-battle. Usual MV objectives include;
> Having the most Kills / Experience at the end of the match.
> Earning ribbons / medals / in-game awards during the match.
> Doing better than a certain player (or group of players).
> Being the best player on the losing team (if I'm on the winning team, I don't really need an excuse).
> Being the best player overall.

As far as I'm concerned, I haven't "lost" if my name is top of the scoreboard post-battle.

Thanx. I f'ing HATE hacks who use "gg" or some version thereof to arrogantly announce they owned you in a complete abuse of politeness. I applaud the original poster for making themselves the target of flaming from the nit-pickers. Said nit-pickers should get off the console, see the light of day and try some outside sports. I'd suggest playing in traffic but since that wouldn't be nice I'll suggest tourney Kendo, where arrogant comments like "gg" at inappropriate times gets you dishonored, beaten, or both.

I use gg to mean Good game and applaud other players lets use Dawn of War 2 for example lets say I`ve just lost a game to another player I will say gg as saying you played a good game congratulations on the win and in the example where I win I will use two examples one where I where I win by the skin of my teeth I will say it as thank you for the challenge and two where I`ve won by a large amount I will say it as thank you for not being unsporting(if he has been a good sport) and for not leaving.

It is possible that the player saying "gg" after beating your pants off is just trying to be polite. Not EVERYONE on the Net is out to make fun of you or hurt your feelings...

Assuming that the other player wasn't rude or unpleasant durng the match, I always toss at least a "gg" or "good game" at the end of a match. Just feels like basic sportsmanship. Even if I destroyed him, I appreciate a pleasant game without any drama. He might have learned a thing or two from me, I got to have a bit of fun.

Jeeez, OP sounds like a militant lesbian who gets pissed off if somone politely opens the door for her while she's struggling with 40 pounds of grocery bags...
