Wow. I love anime too and this just makes me realise how lucky I am to have the parents that I do. They've never had an issue with my love for it, in fact, my mum actually bought Last Exile for herself one day which was pretty cool of her.

People like your father are the kind of people that make me hate this world a little more. Sorry if that offended you.

This reminds me of a lady who told me Atheists are wrong because every time something bad happens to them, they drop down and start praying. It's... Mind-bogling that she even beleives that..! Every single attempt to say anything about it was just responded to by her coming up with some random story about how some non-christian magically turned their life around from a near-death experience that just magically changed their minds.

Of course, this is from the same woman who's convinced that her Irish-Vietnamese blood makes her "special", and proves that god exists because she had visions of some girl in South America getting raped... Speaking to her is like getting punched in the face repeatedly by stupid
..I'm pretty sure she might want to get some intense psychiatric therapy if she claims she is seeing girls getting raped in her mind. Seriously. <_<

The other stuff is nutty, but the bolded just takes the cake and runs.

Accept that he doesn't like the stuff and move on with your life. According to your profile your a legal adult(if you live in the US, at least) and can do whatever you damn well please.

I think it's a case of Animation Age Ghetto, where he thinks anything animated is for children, show him that anime can be adult too...obviously not H-Anime, orelse that would seal the whole thing, show him Death Note...or something, or if he doesn't want to watch it, try watching adult anime near him and see if it piques his interest. :O
Or try this I guess. I recommend Cowboy Bebop if you go this route.
The first words that came to mind when the words "adult anime" appeared were "Bible" and "Black".

That's bad, isn't it?
Well, some might consider it good. I think.

Your dad confuses the porn he watches with normal cosplay I'm afraid.

No, normal cosplayers aren't prostitutes, you can, however, get a prostitute to cosplay for you in Japan. That's not a normal cosplayer though, that's a prostitute offering just one more sex service.

Also, in Japanese love-hotels there actually are costumes available for the couples to role-play together, it's a big thing over there you see, uniform fetishes and whatnot, so that's what creates misunderstandings like your dad's.

Obviously he's been watching/reading Japanese porn on the internet.

Seriously, the only time that ever happens is in porn.

In real life, cosplayers don't have sex with old men - they have sex with other cosplayers. And not for money either - just for fun. What happens at Otakon stays at Otakon.

you could try dressing up in cosplay and telling him you went the whole day without accepting money for sex. I imagine it would end poorly for you, but I bet you could win a few video contests with if you filmed the result. Or get a few million youtube hits

Eh you could go for an eye for an eye and find something he likes and insist something about that. If he likes hunting then all hunters are gay, if he likes baseball then all the players on steroids etc etc. I mean it won't really solve anything but it might make you feel better.

So, I'm just assuming that you fully embrace his favorite music/books/movies, right? Oh, you don't? Hmmm...

Seriously, dude. You're frustrated because he doesn't like the same entertainment media as you do. It's not that he disapproves of your mate. It's not that he disapproves of your vocation. It's not even that he disagrees with your political or religious philosophy.

Entertainment.

Media.

That's a pretty absurd reason to claim a void between you and your dad.

I have no shits to give.

Anime DOES kinda suck. So he's right.
Why does anime suck?

Death Note has a more sophisticated and interesting story than 90% of the live-action TV shows out there.

If you want to trap him, sit him down and watch the Death Note live-action films with him. Then when they're finished, go bring out the manga and anime versions and tell him that that movie he just watched was a simplified and dumbed-down adaptation of that. Maybe put on the anime and show him part of it.

I can't vouch for cosplay, I can't relate to anything more complex than wearing a robe and wizard hat to the Harry Potter premiere (and even then, I'd never have done it myself).

Death Note was good. Fairy Princess Female Wizards X (The other 99.9999% of anime)is not.

Okay, seriously, did you even read my post? My problem isn't that he doesn't like anime. My problem is that he a) constantly berates me for watching it and b) legitmately thinks that all cos-players are prostitutes. I never claimed a "void" between me and my dad either. I have no idea where you got that from. And if you have no shits to give why even bother posting?

There's a terrible habit among (sorry in advance for stereotyping) older generations who seem to believe anything they don't understand must inherently have some form of evil attached to it.

It's not good enough that you like some crazy cartoon stuff he doesn't 'get', so he's gotta find some way to turn into some perverted freakshow thing.

Same reason you find metal/horror movies/comic books/video games blamed for so much, those who don't understand and don't want to do any work to find out, find it far easier to blame and hate than learn.

We've just got to accept it smugly realise they'll all die before us and maybe in 20 years or so we'll have gamers running the country and the TV networks.

At least according to my dad. I thought he was just one of those people that thought "cartoons are for children" and that anime/animation couldn't possibly be mature and should only be aimed at children. When I asked him why he didn't like anime, he gave a bunch of nonsensical reasons (it's not realistic, it's "lame", the characters make weird faces etc. I'm sure you've heard these all before), then he said that people dress up as the characters and have sex with old men for money. Seriously, what the fuck? I tried explaining it to him, and he refused to listen, and he was being completely serious. How am I supposed to talk to someone like that? I've liked anime pretty much all my life, and his utter rejection of it has always been infinitely frustrating, but I had no idea he thought like this.
Actually in Japan it's not unheard of for teenaged girls to have sex with strangers for money or gadgets. Not saying it happens a lot, but the fact that it does allegedly was a cause for concern for japan's health ministry and therefor made the circuit on the conservative prattle shows. He might have gotten his signals crossed on that one.

As for the rest, it sounds like he's just ignorant. Probably can't be helped by talking. It's hard to convince anyone of anything with words. You usually have to help them realize it for themselves. So I wouldn't expect him to change unless he finds something he likes on his own. I used to hear from my sister in law that Japanese cartoons were all pornography. So without my knowing my parents (who while in their 60's loved "Berserk" which they just picked up off our dvd rack and started watching on their own) loaned my berserk collection to my older brother. He and his whole family loved it. And I never had to hear any shit about "japanese cartoons" again, only praise for berserk and the continual question if there's anything else like it to this day.

So long story short, you dad is very confused. If you know what he likes, use your BRAIN (no offense intended but the caps are for emphasis, you're going to have to be smart about this) to pick a show, ask him to try it and hope that he likes it. Don't pick a show where people get punched into the moon or where crazy Japanese humor breaks out every few minutes. In short the big three are ruled out, outright. As is anything involving magical girls, any show where the characters look like precious moments figurines, or the typical High school Heroes stuff. Seriously, if children are piloting mecha or there's a harem involved you know what not to show your dad.

And above all else, be prepared, he may not like it even if he does give it an honest chance (which isn't likely). It's not the end of the world if you and your dad like different things. I'd personally show an older person something like berserk or ghost in the shell, or maybe the magnetic rose segment from memories. But there's pitfalls there too. The 100 man battle stretches believability, memories is not dubbed and ghost in the shell has a lot of talking. People will criticize these criticisms but people are fickle and will fault find if they feel threatened. Old people especially. Really, you'd know your dad best, good luck.

You're not. Your father is having his biases and so do you. Leave him be.

It doesn't sounds like he is restricting you in any way, so why bother him about it? You're just forcing yourself on the guy, talk about something else.
