As I'm sure we're all aware of dressing up in character costumes that look very homemade but had some genuine effort behind them has spread in recent years from being small time things done by alpha geeks at Star Trek conventions to whole passtimes supported by many at almost every major gathering involving games and pop culture alike.

Personally I've never been to a convention but have always been a major fan of gaming, films and in fact dressing up (I fucking LOVE wearing and making costumes. Back when I was growing up putting the old ratty clothes from the old ratty clothes box on, making up characters and putting on devised performances for mum and dad was something me, my sister and our friends frequently did. It's because of that old passion that I've been a part of almost every school theatre type group since I started my education.) and there's been rising interest amongst me and my mates concerning a rather large convention they host in Sydney each year called Supernova that covers gaming, movies, oh-taco treats (With them Jappynese comic books and cartoons), comics and basically everything that could make an acne-riddled geek orgasm.

Seeing as there's huge potential of us actually getting the dosh together to go down there this year I've been humming and harring about well, going there dressed up. And from what I've seen on the escapist and most of the internet is that there are many people who are both passionate cosplayers and eager to give advice.

I'm 14 going on 15 and if I were to go there in costume I'd love to go as a half-life 2 member of resistance in honour of my favourite game. So is cosplaying worth it? Are there any reccomendations when it comes to material? Considering my afforementoned circumstances is there any further advice people may shed?

I'm quite interested in this as well, seeing as a few of my friends want me to come with them to some convention or other, and I've never done any kind of cosplaying before.

I'd probably do it, if it weren't for all the time, money, effort, equipment, commitment, resources and skill required.

I would go to conventions and dress up but I'd need wigs for costumes and I'd have no idea where to put them. Also I'd feel a right dick on the train in a costume unless I went with others.

Well you could always drive yourself or move through the sewers, I mean there's no way in HELL guys like this caught the bus to their convention.

That sounds like fun. Not something I'd do personally, but each to their own.

Also, you have a Red Dwarf Avatar.

Which means you are made of solid win.

Yeah...

I'm all for the dressing up, but for the love of god keep it tasteful and good. I've got a lot of admiration for the really pro ones like that guy who made the big daddy outfit.

Or, hey, you could go as a Quarian and no-one would have to see your face.

As someone who has cosplayed in the past, I feel it appropriate to say it was freakin awesome. I had some great fun, it's always a nice compliment if someone asks you for a picture and if you like costumes anyway, it's a fair bet you'll have a ball.

Go for it!

Make sure a lot of other people will be making a massive effort, no point you being the only one. Take this from the girl who walked through her towns main street dressed as Pyramid Head on Halloween, dragging my gigantic knife behind me. Finally got to the 'Halloween Party' and I was the only one that had worn what could even be considered a costume, blood all over me, massive helmet and knife and all the other girls were dressed like slutty animals.

In regards to the costume, you can find some good 'how to' videos online, but avoid looking at photos of people dressed as your character because you will never feel you look as good.

Also, I don't know if you have Primarks there, but any ridiculously cheap clothes are a massive help. Thanks to Primark I have made decent/good Solid Snake/Meryl costumes, Bret Hart, Pyramid Head, pirate, and Jeff/Matt Hardy.

I know a lot of people who are into it around Brisbane, so hopefully when the next convention comes round I'll be able to join them.

If there's one thing that fills me with vicarious shame, it's cosplay.

It stems all the back to my loating of themepark mascots.

I was going to go to a costume party as Sanji off One Piece. I had the suit. But I didn't have the hair, or the jacket.

Eventually it was just a normal party. So I've never Cos-played in my life.
