I'm talking about how the PSN got hacked, Codemasters, and just recently, Bioware. So what do you reckon, could Steam/Valve be next? Hope not.

each progressive hack is less effective then the last, they may have already tired but failed hard

It's possible, sure. But I'd think they have better security than a lot of places.

Valve secretly have AI that protect the whole of their system, Glados was based on a real AI they have in their computer system =P

Well I just read in the news today that they hacked the public face of the CIA website, so they already seem to be aiming high - it may well just be a matter of time. However, if they did do it, I think it would finally cross the line for me and make me genuinely annoyed.

I believe is would be possible, but since Steam has Steam Guard, you would also have to access/hack a Steam user's Email to get access to their account, and I feel that could get pretty out-of-hand considering that lots of people use many different Email services.

Likely? Not at all.

You'd have better luck trying to raid Gabe's fridge.
I dunno, I get the feeling that he has that pretty guarded!

Like... padlocks, vicious dogs and dead kittens.

That was not a hack it was DoS. That is all they have been doing lately is several DoS attacks.

OT: Yes stop thinking things are unhackable. People can hack anything they want to if they have the knowledge. No matter how good your security is it is still possible to be hacked and I really don't see why people have this is blissfully ignorant belief that things like XBL and Steam or whatever can't be hacked. Because you know paying a sub stops the service from being hacked.

That's the content. I hear he's on the Atkin's Diet now.

A Gabe joke within ten posts? Escapist I am proud.

On topic to the OP: Could someone pick your house door, walk in and steal everything? Certainly, there are people out there that can get through your standard door lock with a pick in under 10 seconds and less than that if they just brute force it with a screwdriver/power drill, is it likely? Not really.

Security is never fool proof, all it does is deter your average opportunist and make it harder to break in. The idea is that average Joe is blocked out and that, for the Pro, eventually the effort of breaking it will outweigh whatever potential gain they could get when instead they could be breaking into less secured systems and raising merry hell.

they could but why?
they wouldn't gain anything from it apart from more people hating them.
then again I,m pretty sure there are more people hating them then loving them.

It's not a widely known fact but "Meet the Sandvich" was actually Gabe's thinly-veiled threat to his colleagues on what would happen if they tried to interfere with his lunch.

Can steam get DDoS'd the way EVE and escapist did? 100% yes. It would probably be easy too. Although the steam infrastructure is a lot more distributed than either eve or the escapist, so it would take more effort.

Can steam get hacked the way Sony et al did? Still 100% yes. People are always finding new bugs in software and new ways to exploit them. The biggest factor as ever is human error, users giving out confidential information like passwords to the wrong people or simply setting too weak a password.

Will it happen? Hopefully not. I can't see anon or lulz going after steam. However there must be quite a few CC details stashed in there. Someone will want it. Someone will try it. Eventually someone will succeed.
