I used to make my own maps and planets up when I was a kid. I guess I still do in a way when I make new maps for RTS and Turn-based Strategy games like Disciples II.
I think of all the planets I came up with, the one I liked best was one I called Twilight (this was a long long time before the movie and book came out so nothing to do with it). Twilight orbits it's star in a way that keeps the south pole pointed straight at the star all the time. Thus, the south pole is in perpetual daylight while the north pole is in perpetual darkness. The sentient beings on the planet live along the equator where it is always twilight, never full day and never full darkness. The surface is about 80% covered in water (the seas around the north pole being covered in ice) with the only dry land being chains of islands scattered around the planet. The atmosphere is somewhat similar to Earth's though the global average temperature is a bit lower since the planet is further away from its star and its star is not quite as powerful as our sun. The sentient beings are divided into tribes with each one controlling a set of islands. They have boats but have not invented a way to fly around. They are better swimmers than humans and are semi-aquatic. There are also lots of different non-sentient beings of all kinds. Many of them are bird-like and can fly. Some of the bird-like creatures are close to being sentient but they don't invent anything nor make any attempt to change the world around them to suit them better (outside of building really cool nests). There are creatures that live a little ways closer to each of the poles. The creatures that live closer to the north pole are adapted for the extreeme cold and can see in the dark while the ones living closer to the south pole are adapted for the extreeme heat and some can even "spit fire" by picking up live coals and spitting them at enemies without burning their mouths. Nothing can live at either pole due to the extreeme temperatures.
The sentient beings have a tribal government style with chiefs and councils of elders. Some tribes are more warlike than others. Some are matriarchies (where the chief is a woman and women are the leaders of their families)while others are patriarchies (where the chief is a man and the eldest man is the leader of each family). There is no currency (like coins and stuff) and all goods and services are bartered for or just taken by force.

A dense jungle world with rich atmosphere and resources populated by a reptilian alien race. It would have three moons and two suns and be four times the size of Earth. It would be a beautiful wonder in the stars with many different continents and regions.
My planet would be ruled by cruel, immortal sorcerer kings. The rest of the people would be nobles or slaves. Gladiator games would be the primary entertainment, and war between neighboring would be the economic driver. The land itself would be a blasted wasteland, with a toxic atmosphere, outside of the domed cities.
That's why you build a planet devoid of life. Or possibly full of sentient cookies.smallharmlesskitten said:

My planet would be a dense forest planet that has a few large open plains and is inhabited by no one dominant race but instead many many primitive animals and I would live in a hut carved into the tallest tree of the planet, also it would rain every night and play a very soft 'Adagio For Strings' while it does =P
My dream planet would be like a Colossal Super ball the size of mars. It's seismic crust would be in millions of small pieces, causing lots of earthquakes. When there's an Earthquake, everything would bounce around on this Super ball planet with wild and zany trajectories. The houses, of course, would have to be built to withstand this odd force, so they would be made as a large rubber ball in a large metal tube so that no matter how much it bounced, the house would not end up over in Wimbledon if you built it in Greenwich, if you get my meaning.

Population: cool people from the escapist (growing)

Economy: duh Obviously better than it is now

My planet would have mostly swamps and rainforests but there is one large desert region and has 2 poles just like earth. It would be inhabited by a large variety of species. Most of them have evolved from the same gene and thus, those species have very similair traits. There are humanoids, canines, avians, primates and dinosaurs living on the planet that share these reptillian traits. (Saurian heads, scaly skin, spiky spines)
They are all highly intelligent, with the humanoids in the lead, these primitive creatures hunt with crafted tools and live in structures. They have also tamed some of the 'lesser' reptillian species for food and hunting. They live in small tribes and live in a balance with nature. Some tribes are at war over territory but they all share a religion that strictly forbids the use of deadly force against those of their own kind. (except for the lesser reptillians)
