I'll aim to keep this short though I could go on and o- (hmm first sentence is already omnious no?) Anywho!

I am doing a research case study into children's creativity and how well the current English National curriculum matches up to fostering their ability. I thought you guys might like to join in with a small side quiz just for kicks. Whilst I can't include this public survey in anyway I thought the Escapist might find it interesting to see each other's responses on what you consider creative.

The questions that follow aim to cover a broad range of creative thinking, ability and traits. It's been interesting in my own research to find exactly what the teacher's, children's and the public sector's responses are into creativity. For example would you consider a footballer's ability on the pitch a creative trait that has been developed? Yet that has nothing to do with the massive over three-quarters repsonse of people who attribute creativity purely to drawing skills. .... Crap I rambled. To the QUIIIIIIZ /flaps chequered flag

To answer the quiz simple respond with (Really Agree / Agree / Not Sure / Disagree / Really Disagree / Not Applicable) next to the statements that follow. Here is an example of how to respond -

The Sky can be a range of different colours. Agree.

[Copy paste below and fill in how you agree) :

Creative people do not like working hard unless they think it?s fun.

Creative people will enjoy lots of different types of sports, lots of different books and lots of different types of music and T.V.

Creative people have many ideas they like, but find it hard to write/draw/make them like they want to.

Creative people start tasks and work as soon as they can, they do not want time to think beforehand.

Creative people think of other ways to do writing/artwork/numeracy they have not been shown.

Creative people think about themselves, who they are and consider what they want themselves to be.

[I would make this into a poll but I can only throw up one question at a time ;P] Have fun y'all.

Gonna go with 1-5, 1 being badly disagree, 5 being strongly agree, and ect.

The Sky can be a range of different colours: 5

Creative people do not like working hard unless they think it?s fun: 4

Creative people will enjoy lots of different types of sports, lots of different books and lots of different types of music and T.V.: 4 (Don't think they have to enjoy all of that, but their tastes will be diverse, not sure if that should be a 4 or a 5)

Creative people have many ideas they like, but find it hard to write/draw/make them like they want to: 3

Creative people start tasks and work as soon as they can, they do not want time to think beforehand: 1

Creative people think of other ways to do writing/artwork/numeracy they have not been shown: 5

Creative people think about themselves, who they are and consider what they want themselves to be: 5

Nice man, when I actually did the research it was several more questions than this but I figure people would quickly get tired answering all 8 ;). It's good to see that you justified some of your responses too. If it's of any interest to you, I'd say your creative understanding levels are around Tier 3/B (which means it's very high, the highest being Tier 3/C, the lowest at Tier 0/X) Basically means you understand and recognise a broad range of physical attributes and have a very good understanding of the mental processes involved in creativity :).

Maybe I'll have to post up the self assessment section later in the week so people can review themselves.

I couldn't really put much of a general assumption of "creative people", so I'm mostly comparing the questions to how it relates to my own creative pursuits. I found the questions to be somewhat difficult to answer, mostly because they felt somewhat confusing.

Creative people do not like working hard unless they think it's fun. Really agree (In my case: "If it is worth doing, it is worth doing well. Otherwise I don't care.")

Creative people will enjoy lots of different types of sports, lots of different books and lots of different types of music and T.V. Agree (In my case I don't really care for sports, but I admire the depth that it entails)

Creative people have many ideas they like, but find it hard to write/draw/make them like they want to. Agree

Creative people start tasks and work as soon as they can, they do not want time to think beforehand. Really disagree (Planning and organizing is an extremely important part of my creative process).

Creative people think of other ways to do writing/artwork/numeracy they have not been shown. Really agree (If it relates to originality I think it is something that any creative person strives for).

Creative people think about themselves, who they are and consider what they want themselves to be. Agree (If it means "being introspective", I agree. If it means being self-centered or self-obsessed, I'm inclined to disagree.)

Hiikuro the last statement is exactly that :) It concentrates on being introspective and someone's ability to understand the intrapersonal nature of creativity and how it is a social process.

I disagree with all of these because it is generalising that every person that is 'creative' is like this. I believe there are different forms of creativity and not all 'creative' people can be fit into one specific point likes these questions make them out to be.

Indeed :), it is less about saying that a creative person has all of these qualities and more about what you would consider is creative and can be found within people. Then you can say well that person is creative in this way or that way, not just a categorisation of a group of creative individuals that must have all these elements ;P Well thought out though :D, always good to bring out more juicy discussion ^^

Hmm...I answered thinking the same thing. Due to the original wording I replied as though I was judging a group.

SA!
Not sure this covers the traits relating to creativity, unless social irony is considered creative? Dilema ensues...

On a side note, Not Applicable has been added.

Creative people do not like working hard unless they think it's fun.
Really Disagree (it's a broad over-generalisation based on pure assumption, and not necessarily correlation).

Creative people will enjoy lots of different types of sports, lots of different books and lots of different types of music and T.V.
Agree (any creative output needs inspiration from a number of sources, although not necessarily or exclusively those mentioned).

Creative people have many ideas they like, but find it hard to write/draw/make them like they want to.
Disagree (it may be difficult at times translating thought to text/images, but creative people are no worse off on average than uncreative people. In fact, by their very definition, creative people are generally considered more likely to successfully create).

Creative people start tasks and work as soon as they can, they do not want time to think beforehand.
Really Disagree (without constructive thought processes, how can one hope to be creative?).

Creative people think of other ways to do writing/artwork/numeracy they have not been shown.
Agree (whilst lateral thinking requires creativity and resourcefulness, one must also understand the subject matter at hand. So both creativity and knowledge are necessary. In general, however, creative types are more likely to think laterally in response to a task).

Creative people think about themselves, who they are and consider what they want themselves to be.
Disagree (one does not need to be creative in order to be egocentric or self-reflective).

Creative people do not like working hard unless they think it's fun. Agree, well even if they find it as work the final thing will be rewarding.

Creative people will enjoy lots of different types of sports, lots of different books and lots of different types of music and T.V. Agree

Creative people have many ideas they like, but find it hard to write/draw/make them like they want to. Not sure, well more of sometimes things don't come out the way you imagined and if you really care for it you keep at it til it looks right.

Creative people start tasks and work as soon as they can, they do not want time to think beforehand. Disagree.

Creative people think of other ways to do writing/artwork/numeracy they have not been shown. Strongly Agree

Creative people think about themselves, who they are and consider what they want themselves to be. Agree, who doesn't?

1. Creative people do not like working hard unless they think it's fun.

Agree and disagree. It all depends on the person and their personal goals. I know some creative people who literally work their asses off 24/7, and others (like me) who value their free time and do their absolute best to have an even ratio of the two.

2. Creative people will enjoy lots of different types of sports, lots of different books and lots of different types of music and T.V.

Again, it depends on the person and their preferences. Most of the creative people I know don't like sports, but there are a few who keep up with a few. Most of the creative people I know read mostly fantasy, but I think it would be a stretch to say that ALL creative people are like this. TV and music are both all over the place, again just depending on the person and their preferences.

3. Creative people have many ideas they like, but find it hard to write/draw/make them like they want to.

That is a challenge with any artistic medium, and it isn't bound to just creative people. Whenever I draw a picture, I try to get it to a place where I can call it "done," but when I look at it even after it's "done" I can easily point out at least half a dozen things that are just all wrong.

Some are better than others, but most of it just depends on your level of skill, what you want out of your work, and how much leeway you are willing to give it.

4. Creative people start tasks and work as soon as they can, they do not want time to think beforehand.

Some are like this, some aren't. I know some people who like to jump straight into things, but personally I like to step back and plan things out. For example, I'm working on a story I think I'd like to get published in the future, but I haven't technically started "writing" it. However, I do currently have an 8 page outline in Microsoft Word that I'm using to map everything out.

In the outline, I'm working out all of the details. Not only the story and the characters, but the world in general. The culture, the name system, geography, religious beliefs, politics, how the cultures interact, how it all ties in with the main story...I want to know where everything goes before I get started.

And even when just drawing a figure, I always get a good armature set in place before I start hammerin gout the details. But there are others in my drawing classes who prefer to start with the organic shapes of the model, completely abandoning the idea of an armature or layout.

5. Creative people think of other ways to do writing/artwork/numeracy they have not been shown.

It depends on what the individual wants versus what they've been shown, and how much they are willing to experiment and risk trying to find it. If they are so bold, then they'll experiment and mix until they find that magic technique that gets them the results they want. Others are inclined to work with what is familiar to them, polishing those techniques to a mirror-shine so that they can flawlessly apply them whenever they so choose.

6. Creative people think about themselves, who they are and consider what they want themselves to be.

I don't think those types of thoughts are just bound to creative people. Everybody thinks about this at some point in their life. The choices for creative people might be different, such as deciding if they want to find a mundane job to pay the bills or try to live solely on their art, but everyone's choices in life are different. From the mailman, to the grocery store clerk, to the avant-garde graffiti artist that lives in a dilapidated loft so they can be close to the railroad tracks.

I think the main problem with all of these questions here is they are based on absolutes, specifically the absolute "all." You aren't going to find a group of people that are "all" of anything, especially when you're talking about creative people. If you want to find traits or patterns to define creative people, my advice is to exclude nothing. Leave no possibilities out.

There's a movie called Beautiful Losers I think you should track down, if you wish to understand creative people a bit better. It's a documentary that follows several different artists that live in urban areas. They talk about their pasts, how they got there, what they went through, and what keeps them going. It is a very inspiring film for artists :)
