So, I recently started reading a manga series called Yotsuba, which can only be described as pure joy printed on paper. It's basically the most adorable, family friendly thing ever created. Out of curiosity, I looked up the creator on Wikipedia, and checked out the other things he wrote. Among them were azumanga daioh, which I had heard of before, and Inma no Ranbu, which I had never heard of before. So I image searched it on google:

So, what creator has surprised you with something that is a total 180 degree turn on their other work? Something you could never imagine them doing? Extra points if it's not something their well known for.

Azamu you dog, you made a hentai manga?! XD Why does this somehow make me like him even more? It's not too strange I guess when you realize there's always been a very subdued sexual overtone to some of his character designs.

Also, good to know another person discovered the brilliance of Yotsuba&I. More people should.

OT: Well, apparently Gainax animators actually worked on Boku no Pico. And if you don't know what that is, for the love of God, don't look it up. My mind has already been soiled.

Gainax as a whole has people who have done odd work. I mean just look at Hideki Anno's career:

Part 1:
Part 2: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3baf2g

Kind of cute that he worked on something because his wife was working on it. Really throws people unaware of their marriage for a loop.

Robert Rodriguez made Sharkboy and Lavagirl. 'Nuff said.
Funny thing is, I grew up with his spy kids movies, so I was used to his family friendly image as a kid, and was surprised by his other work when I grew older.

You know, ive started to notice a trend of that in the anime community. A lot of people and projects seemed to get their start in stuff like that, including, if you can believe it, Square Enix. In Gainex's case, it would be like if the cast and crew of hardcore pornography went on to make The Godfather.

Sam Raimi, director of the Evil Dead films, also did the 2000s Spider-Man films.

The director of every Mad Max film, George Miller, was best known for family-friendly stuff like Happy Feet and Babe in between Thunderdome and Fury Road.

There's a really adorable yuri manga called Girl Friends and the author Milk Morinaga also wrote a hentai called Mare which is full of rape, gore and tentacles.

Well, there's George Miller, Director of the four mad max movies... who also did Happy Feet.

James Herbert is primarily known for gross out horror novels like The Rats and The Fog, but my favorite novel of his Is Fluke, a much gentler adventure tale about dog realizing he's the reincarnation of a man, and searching out his former family to protect them from danger.

On the manga front, one pf the Pokemon manga's was drawn by a hentai artist, leading it to be... modified for the west as he'd given all the female character torpedo tits (yes, even misty) and a school teacher was wearing an outfit making it very clear she'd 'shaved' so to speak.

To me, this sort of thing is not a big deal at all. If anything, I find it strange that some people spend their whole lives working under the same set of constraints. In creative endeavors. That's... Much weirder. There's nothing more natural for a creative talent than to want to branch out and try creating different things.

Most people know who Mild-Mannered Pate is. What most people don't know is that Peter Serafinowicz voiced him. Who is that, you might ask? He is a British comedian who has appeared in Shaun of the Dead, South Park, Guardians of the Galaxy and, here's the kicker, played Darth Maul in Phantom Menace. That's right: Mild-Mannered Pate is Darth Maul.

Everyone here remember Mordin Solus? That scientist guy from Mass Effect 2 and 3? Well, in Mass Effect 3 he was voiced by William Salyers, a voice actor who is also known for his role in Regular Show.

Actually, it's Ray Parks who played Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. Citation is here. [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120915/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#cast]

I got to say Bobcat Goldthwait had an interesting change in his career. From clownishly absurd comedian who was in Police Academy movies to writing and directing brilliant dark comedies. His last movie, Call Me Lucky, is a documentary about comedian/activist Barry Crimmins.

Roald Dahl, the author of such beloved children's classics like James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, has also written adult fiction. Sometimes Never: A Story for Supermen is a book about Gremlins re-emerging from underground in an attempt to retake the Earth while humans kill each other during the fictional World Wars 3 and 4. Then there's My Uncle Oswald and the best way to sum it up is Leisure Suit Larry - the Book. It's a memoire-style book about the sexual exploits of Oswald. I could be mistaken but the meaning of the word "snozzberry" is contained in that book (spoiler: it's penis)

The director of Alien directed an advert for Apple that was a parody of 1984 wherein the heroine frees the populace from the influence of not-Big Brother.

Sir John Tenniel was the man who did the illustrations for the original Alice in Wonderland, which is what he's most famous for. But he also worked as an illustrator for the Punch magazine for a long time.

Amongst other things, he did the cover relating to the crackdown of the 1857 rebellion in India.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/55/JusticeTenniel1857Punch.jpg

Punch being what it was, it'd be easy to think that it was a critique of the crackdown that turned into a senseless slaughter, but it isn't. It's an homage. It's entirely straight-faced. It was accompanied by a poem, as well.

Our swords come for slaughter: they come in the name
of Justice: and sternly their work shall be done.
And a world now indignant, behold with acclaim
That hecatomb, slain in the face of the sun.

And terrified India shall tell to all time
How Englishmen payed her for murder and lust;
And stained not their fame with one spot of the crime
that brought the rich splendour of Delhi to dust.

But woe to the hell-hounds! Their enemies know
Who hath said to the soldier that fights in His name-

'Thy Foot Shall Be Dipped In The Blood Of Thy Foe
And The Tounge Of Thy Dogs Shall Be Red Through The Same. Psalter 68:24

Oh, dear, oh, dear.

...Well, fuck! No wonder I like that OVA... *blinks* or, at least, its two sequels...

OT: The creator of [most of] Nickelodeon's sitcoms from the 90s and counting as well as "SNL for kids" All That also co-created the adult sitcom What I Like About You co-starring formal All That cast member and star of her own show, created by the same creator as All That, Amanda Bynes...

The dude who created The Big Bang Theory worked on Rosanne...

The creator of the TV adaption to The Middleman worked on both Lost and Charmed...

One creator of Mr. Show directed Lets Go To Prison while the other creator of Mr. Show created Todd Margaret...

The creator of The Boondocks co-created Black Jesus...

Tim & Eric directed most of the Terry Crews Old Spice ads...

I'm sorry... I think most of these would surprise other people more than me, unfortunately... :p

Apparently Peter was the voice of Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace, not the actual actor for him. Citation can be found here [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Serafinowicz].

Garth Ennis is a great comics writer, but there are certains themes he enjoys (sex, violence, genital mutilation). I always get surprised when I remember how he's written probably one of the best and faithful Superman stories of all time (During his Hitman run).

Starlight by Mark Millar was phenomenal, I'd written him off as a gimmecky movie-chasing hack by that point. But wow, that was possibly the best comic I read last year.

I'm going to continue the trend of being surprised at George Miller going from Mad Max to Babe and Happy Feet and then back to Mad Max.
