EDIT
There was one particularly unsettling bit in Dead Space 2 that bugged me.
When you go back to the Ishimura, there's a decontamination chamber you must go through. I remember in the first game when you go through there, it locks you in a tiny room and a bunch of necromorphs jump out at you, so that's what I was expecting. Instead, you stand in the small room for about 30 seconds, holding your breath and waiting for them to come, but they never do... The room just decons and lets you pass. That was a good part for me.
Yeah, it was the same for me.

Then the second time you go through, I saw a Pack banging on the glass where I just came from. I was like 'Why would one be there? I'm not going back that way.' So I turned around and saw an Enhanced Slasher in the direction I would be heading. 'Oh. They were trying to distract me. That's...stupid.' *Loud crash from behind* 'What was th-OHGODMYFACEITSEATINGMYFAAAAAACE'

The Orphanage in Thief: Deadly Shadows.

Definitely one of the best haunted house levels in a game, ever.

The creepers from this indie game called minecraft are terrifiying. Maybe you've heard of it? It's not very well known...
No. I can't say I've ever heard of that game.

Must only be the coolest of the cool cats who know about that very awesome yet inexplicably unappreciated game.
I know, you'd of thought that more people would know about, or at least a website dedicated to gaming news might post a few articles about it.
Oh god i thought you were being serious at first... it actually hurt a bit :(

I don't really play horror games but i remember when FEAR 2 came out my friend was playing it in his pitch black room and when the girl randomly popped onto his screen he screamed like a girl and unloaded all his ammo in her direction XD

Playing Geist with my friends. I'm the only human at the moment... I turn around, and bam, the other three guys are suddenly ready to murder my ass. I was like, 10 at the time, and I jumped a little.

My recent play through of S.T.A.L.K.E.R I was rushing through it to refresh my memory of it as I am plaining on this weekend making a lets play of it.So I was run killing things not really watching out for anything when I get to the red forest as soon as I enter I am chased by at lest two bloodsuckers that never really attack me they just circled me as I wasted ammo till I hear the worst sound in the zone "Click"

So I start running around trying franticly to find the way to fosters all the while I hear more and more noises after me till I finally find the "gate" I stop on the other side of it and all I hear is their heavy breathing no eyes nothing just breathing.

Most Creeped out feeling I had on the game in a long time.

This may sound lame, but it was in Fable 2. It was inside one of those demon doors. You're in this snowy area, and it's got jingling bells going, and there's a little lit up cottage with a fire going. It's got this whole Christmas feel, so lovely and warm. You run up to the cottage door, and just as you step inside the lights go out, the bells stop, and the inside turns into a run-down abandoned shack. I had to take a moment to get over my "wtf?!" daze before hesitantly exploring for treasure. I expected to run into some sort of undead or something, but nothing but a treasure chest upstairs. Then I got my ass out of there as fast as possible.

I was only 10 at the time, so this may not hold up as well 9 years later, but my moment is from Halo. The first level where you find the Flood. This was before Halo became as well known as it is, so I knew nothing about the Flood. So I'm making my way through some kind of underground building, and all I'm finding are dead alien bodies. Finally I get to a door and something comes out of it. I must have fired almost a full clip before realizing it was a dead body.

For me, it's a tie between in Halo:CE, when you come across the marine who is traumatized from the Flood, and then you find the helmet cam showing them, and some of the early cinematics in Starcraft showing the Zerg.

For me it was Shadows of the Empire on the sewer level. You are swimming through murky water and can't see farther than 10 meters in front of you. Then you see a tentacle large than you appear right in front of you appear out of the depths and you realize there is a giant tentacle monster in the water with you. I have never been able to play another video game without fear of murky water.

The whole Ishimura gave me the creeps. I was like, "I'm gonna get swamped." First few rooms no enemies...Hmmm. After the chamber still no enemies...'OH! I get it. They're gonna swamp me in some long dark tunnel and then swamp me the whole way off the ship. *Enter the dark tunnel with the Necromorphs that charge you* Okay...Dark and a tunnel. Theres gonna be enemies. *Pick up a crate, throw it down the tunnel* 'GRAGHR'....'Shit, there it is'. >_>

Creepiest moment? Any horror game that you don't have a gun to defend yourself with.

Also Halo...Yes halo. When I saw all the dead Covenant lying on the ground my instant thought was, "Shit...There's something worse around."
The fact that its the first level you're truly alone in the game makes the entire experience much worse, or better depending upon your liking for scary things.

When I think about a game actually scaring me, I always think of the monkeys in System Shock. I really don't like monkeys.

The latter half of the library level in Condemned always creeps me out cause it's the first time you encounter those scrawny little guys who look like they were plastic wrapped then burnt alive. Having them pop out of the shelves and stuff, I never get used to that. The other is probably towards the end when you're chasing after the villain inside that house.

And of course F.E.A.R. is always good for scary moments.

The scene in Batman: Arkham Asylum when it seems as if the game glitches up and breaks. It was my friends game and I freaked out! I thought I had broken his game!

The craziest though had nothing to do with the game. I was playing Fallout 3 and suddenly a message appears from some random guy on Xbox Live. I check the message and it is basically random noises with a white noise background. I tried to get in contact with the guy, but my messages fell on deaf ears. He never sent anything back to me.

Come one week later, and I am at my friends house and I remember the message and think it had been a while and they will admit to the joke. I ask my friend to look up the guys name and it says no such name exists. I think,"Oh, we must have put in the wrong name or something." I pull out my hardrive and plug it in. I sign into Live and go to my messages. The message had been deleted. I didn't delete it. And there were older messages, so the 360 didn't just delete it on its own.

Sorry for the long message, just thought it might freak you out as much as it did me.

In Amnesia the Dark Descent, at one point, you fall unconscious. When you wake up, the hallways you were in are now flooded with water. You take a few steps, and then you find out there's a ghost in the water THAT WANTS TO KILL YOU. It's scary, it's tense, and I haven't looked at survival horror games haven't been the same way since.

Right about when it came out, a friend had rented the Fatal Frame. On Halloween. In the dark.

I feel like that game got a lot less scary as you became accustomed to the sort of stuff it threw at you, but it was terrifying before you knew what to expect.
