Creepy Hospital Droid Takes to the Stage

Forget singing holograms [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105250-Japanese-Pop-Star-Draws-Crowds-Despite-Being-a-Hologram], the future of Japanese synthetic performers is robo-thespians.

A couple of weeks ago [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104771-Creepy-Hospital-Droid-Watches-You-When-Youre-Sick] we skipped merrily down the uncanny valley with a hospital robot designed to keep patients company. But now it seems that the android in question has grown weary of its humdrum existence of sitting in hospital rooms creeping people out, and has given it all up for a life on stage.

Director Oriza Hirata cast the Geminoid-F, which is controlled by a human actress in a booth behind the stage, in the part of an android caretaker looking after a terminally ill girl whose parents have abandoned her. The droid was custom built for the play with only the servos it needed to perform its part, cutting the usual price tag of $1.2 million dollars by 90%.

Hirata said that robots could actually be better on stage than humans, because you could cherry pick the best techniques and movements from different actors and program them all in. The robot's human co-star, Bryerly Long, wasn't convinced however, saying that she felt like she was alone on stage, and that the robot lacked the human presence that another flesh and blood actor provided.

Despite Long's reservations, Hirata said that the robot did a great job of boosting ticket sales, and that he expected around 600 people to come and watch the play over the course of its two-day run.

Yeah, they do exactly what they're told which is great...but you can EASILY tell it's a robot. Cool tech though.

That is probably the creepiest thing i've ever seen in my life...

We are just one step closer to Skynet and Judgment day...

she doesn't stabilize herself like humans do which is why she seems so robotic. Humans don't shake back and forth like that when we move.

Hmm...

Bring on the humanoid robots! Just not the robot Apocalypse.

People pay to see creepy robots? As much as I'd love to see Androids, I wouldn't pay a dime to see one.

AAAAGH AAAAGH AAAAGH!
GET IT AWAY! GET IT AWAAAAAAAY!
That Mechani-***** is parked in the deepest recesses of the uncanny valley. She represents the very epitome of uncanny creepiness.
And I think she was able to suck out some of my soul through the video alone.

That is so frightening, because it looks just different enough from a human to freak me out.

Ahhhhh! Keep that thing away from me, it will haunt my dreams forever!

But seriously, that is super creepy. And I think... yeah, definitely not as realistic as the last video of a creepy robot, as there were brief moments in that one where the mechanical horror actually looked human (which might have made the bits where it subsequently shatters that impression worse come to think of it). This thing is just creepy 100% of the time.

They have to make them unattractive.

Otherwise the stage hands would try to boink her when no one is around.

Who the fuck would think of this. That's just terrifying, it's like he wants to rip our humanity away.

So close and yet so far.
I have just been bitchslapped by the uncanny valley. I cannot feel my cheek and looking at it kind of disturbs me now.

Hmm. I think it works in its role, that of an android playing an android, but I still don't see this filling in for human actors. (Maybe Keanu Reeves or Christian Slater)

I know it's obvious, but a robot can't emote, all the communication must be carried by voice, and it's a long way from looking like smooth human movement. If they can ever make robots which move like actual people, then yes, maybe I could see it, but right now this is still deep in the Uncanny Valley and only digging deeper.

The fact that every robot from Japan has a female appearance tells me the ultimate goal is a robotic wife. Seriously, does Japan have any plans to make a male robot at any point?
