Crying for a video game

I got as immersed in the Portal experience as anyone else, but I can't empathize with an inanimate cube just because the robot trying to kill me tells me to. If it was the only cube, as in, none of those storage cubes existed, then I'd have felt connected, but to me it was just another cube with the only outstanding things about it being a heart on it and being told to love it. I just don't get it.

When I think about it, I think that people (or at least me) didn't so much become attached to the companion cube as they did to the the whole gimmick around it. Meaning that even if they actually didn't much care about the cube, they were compelled to act, or even believe, that they did. (Personally I know I didn't think twice about sending the cube to its blazing death, but I know that I like to act as if I did).

And on topic:
1) No. However I don't recall crying over a work of fiction since I was a little kid.
2) As valid as with any work of fiction.

Ha ha! I watched that video... Man, did that guy look angry at the end! They were treating him like an alcoholic or drug addict. Maybe he should take HER on the show and talk about her obsession with watching TV, or reading, or doing any other kind of "it's not real, it's virtual interaction" activity.

Morgan was great, too. She just loved making sweeping generalizations and typecasting ALL male game players. Ooh! I love God Hand! That makes me a "warrior" gamer! But wait, I also have Valkyrie Profile 2 and Fire Emblem! That must make me a "fantasy" gamer! Oh, drat! I ALSO own F-Zero GX and Midnight Club! I must be a sports gamer! And then there's Hitman, Splinter Cell, Katamari Damacy, and Okami... See why this isn't working, Morgan?

Yeah, three types of gamer(that I remember) were described by Morgan Manjaw. THREE types. There are more game GENRES than that!

I knew X-Play was full of hacks, but I had no idea Morgan was their queen.

The only video game I ever cried over was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and I think I cried cause my brother switched the game off while I was playing it. I was about 8 or 9 mind you

And why sure, I think it's perfectly fine to cry over a video game. Heck, some of them are almost exactly like movies now and people always cry in movies.

I have cried over games for different reasons. Although never over the story line. I cried over wanting a game badly. I cried over losing a game. I cried over winning a game once, but that was perfectly fine because it was IMPOSSIBLE! imagine playing mario frustration like they want you to, double the length of the level, and beating it.

And i think it's perfectly fine for a person to cry over games, just not the story line. If you cried over aeris's death in FFVII, see a doctor, you might have lost your balls.

Note: girls can cry all they want so the past statements were not for them.

So... Let me get your logic straight. It's perfectly acceptable to be a spoiled brat and cry because you don't get your way, but if you cry from something that is intentionally supposed to make you sad, there's something wrong with you?

Ok I just watched this and it got me pissed off to the core. Crying over a "silly game"? Fucking hell these women should not be one to talk about crying over things like this. To put it very blunt: Games = interactive movies (not always I know but just from a shallow perspective right now). Women cry over certain movies all the time and since when is that a bad thing? I'm not going around saying "you cried when DiCaprio died in Titanic you're stupid that was just a silly movie". I think crying over a certain game is even more justified as you are more emotionally involved because you interact with what's on your screen.

If the women in that room can't see this then there's something wrong with this world (duh).

Can't say I've ever cried at a game, but Half Life 2 Ep 2 came close. Also, The Darkness is kinda sad, and leaves a lump in your throat

The closest I've ever come to crying in a game would be in Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. The ending was just so....unfair.
Mind you, I'd never actually cry, for I am a Man. *looks around furtively*

I think if its acceptable to cry at a book or film, then yes, why not cry at a game? In many ways, you're far more attached to the characters in a game than you can be to those in a film. After all, you've been with them longer, and you've felt like you've been a shaping force in their life.

1) No, I don't play too many seriously emotional games.
2) Yes. The game sets you up to feel for the characters, to understand them then kills them or does something to create that reaction. It's the same as movies, books, whatever, in that if they are done right they can create powerfully emotional points, so much so that some people cry. There's nothing wrong with it, though I can see those womens point of view. They were thinking Mario or GTA, or looking at it like crying over an action figure, without understanding the emotion behind the topic.

there have been a few things that have brought me fairly close, ending to HL2:ep2 etc.

the second song during the end credits of Dino Crisis 2 really brought me close to tearing up when paired with the scenes of the dinosaurs simply getting on with their lives, not killing or hunting but simply moving in their groups.

crying over a video game is perfectly normal. it really pisses me off when people ridicule others for crying over video game that they describe as "simply made up, not real". this is true and i do agree, unless it's based on real events of course, yet it's when they then say it's perfectly fine to cry over a book that is nothing more than someone's imagination.

people piss me off, especially those that follow mainstream opinion as if it were truth.

Can't say I actually have cried at a game before, but one I cam BLOODY close to crying at was at the very end of Final Fantasy: Crisis Core.
Yes yes, I knew Zach was going to die, but the way the whole thing was played out, the long, extended battle scene with the Shinra troops, getting bullets pumped into him, but still getting up and fighting on.

It was just a real moment for me when he finally hit the floor, and yes, I think it's perfectly fine to cry over a game, depending on the situation, a game is like any other form of media, as said before, it has a script, a storyline, characters that you can get attached to, so yes, it's perfectly fine.

The end of FFX made me cry, as did the Death of Aeris in FFVII the first time I played it, wouldn't really phase me now though. I also almost cried at the end of MGS3 and I did feel legitimately sad when I thought Raiden "died" in MGS4, the fact that he didn't was annoying.

Oddly "Legend of Mana" had some very tragic moments in it that made me feel very sad, like the ending of the Jumi storyline, or the ending of the Demonlord plotline.

Any of the "true" endings of Chrono Trigger with "To Far Away Times" playing always makes me feel emotional. Similarly the moment with Marle and Chrono on Deathpeak is very emotion raising.
