That's impossible and he knows it. This is just marketing.
How is it impossible?
Well, it's not impossible, but no company in their right mind would do that. No exceptions.
What.. make an AAA game free to play and have similar business models to games in the East? Am I missing something? Because this already happens, and will only continue to happen more in the future

I've never seen a gamer 'fear' next gen consoles. Usually they're just wishing the consoles would actually catch up.

Given how short most games are nowadays a shareware version would hardly be more than a 30 minute demo.
That wouldn't neccessarily be a bad thing - if priced accordingly.
That wouldn't happen, I mean we are starting to see more and more pc games even go the $60 route, damn cod. Publishers will charge as much as they can even while saying games cost too much.

I want that kind of business model in the Western world with the quality of a Crysis.
This guys is hilarious.
And I hope that future f2p games are like TF2 and not like Tribes: Ascend.

Tribes is getting closer to pay to win with every patch. Adding overpowered weapon for 100k exp. and needing to farm 20 days for 1 weapon is just ridiculous.

Actually he stopped developing for PC when the original Crysis was the most pirated game of the year.
Crysis was the most pirated game because there was no proper demo and people wanted to know if they can even run the game.

I know at least 30 people who pirated Crysis just to test it and everyone who could run it, bought the game because the original was awesome. I'm one of those 30 and I bought Crysis the same day I downloaded it and did a test run.

Other people pirated it just to test their PC's. Lots of no gamer did that because Crysis, at the time of release was a fucking beast. Even for today's graphics Crysis looks great.

So yeah, the number of pirated copies (someone tell me how they even know the numbers?) means nothing in the case of Crysis and he knows it. It's just pure greed that made the move to the consoles.

And don't get me wrong. Everyone wants money and they create games because of the money. So them moving to a bigger market is not a bad thing. The bad thing is that they sell crappy ports at the full price and then act all high and mighty.

Why should we fear the next gen consoles?

PC gamers already have better tech than they do anyway; we're merely held back by the medium.

Afraid? Why would any PC player be afraid of the next generation of consoles? I have no issue or problem with my fellow gamers who choose to play on consoles.

The only thing that makes me worry is that PC gamers have, arguably, had to deal with more and more console ports that often lacks quality and polish.

Hardware wise, the consoles will probably be outmoded my the majority of current PC hardware - and even if they do incorporate the latest and greatest hardware it will be outdated within 6 months.

I don't fear next gen consoles, I fear the death of single player and the free-to-play model you're talking about heralds in just that.

Crytek's free to play game? Multiplayer only

Biowares supposed future free to play game? MMO (multiplayer only)

Valves free to play game? Multiplayer only.

So thanks, Yerli, but no thanks. I'd rather pay my £40 and get an awesome single player game than have a free to play multiplayer game.

Next gen? You mean up to date gen.

It's been 7 years since the Xbox360. That's not current gen. That's fucking antique. The 720 is about as powerful as the PC I sold for 500$ a few years ago because "It couldn't keep up any more".

That's what your next gen console is. A licensed PC that has already been surpassed by the PC hardware coming out next month.

I'm not scared. I'm OVERJOYED that I don't have to play games Locked at 30FPS or Locked at fucking 45 degree FOV any more. Finally pc ports don't have to suck straight out of the gate any more because their outdated systems can only handle a FOV that causes nausea.

Not to go against the grain or anything, but I'm a PS3 player, and I think free to play is a terrible reality. It's a company's way of nickel and diming consumers under the guise of a free game, being often pay-to-win. I find it hard to believe that a game like Crysis could even be balanced as a F2P, or there'd be no incentive to buy in. And that f***ing EA...buying bullets...god, I just...want to kill every last one of them. It's that kind of TERRIBLE practice that is going to choke the AAA gaming industry, and I'll be reasonably happy if it does.

Also, even as a console player, I don't see what PC was fearing in the first place, except maybe piracy. New game demos are often presented on PCs rather than their native hardware because PCs will always keep evolving. By the time a console is out, PC technology will be better. It's just how the world is. Although I do like the fact that I don't have to buy a new PLaystation every time a better game comes out.

I'm a little confused as to how many of us fear next gen consoles? I welcome them as it means the games can progress rather than being restricted by the current gen's hardware.

And as to free to play, i like it until you get to a certain point where it becomes nesscary to pay for the game to even make money, for example on world of tanks (a simple but brilliant game) its great up to around tier 7 out of 9, after t6 you will notice to make any money and still help in battle you need premium, my t9 tank loses money most battles without premium (unless i don't take damage).

I was in the line of thinking that most pc gamers want the next gen to come out due to how the current gen is holding things back.
The master race has a strange relationship with consoles. We need new ones to come out so that developers will move up to a new "standard" of visual/audible development, yet we will always deride them after a while when said standard is overtaken by a newer one that will get almost-instantly adopted by our sleek, beautiful number crunching monsters.

I'm being slightly facetious there, but you get the point.

If you're making some sort of reference to PC's requiring an upgrade regularly, I've had my current PC now for 3 years and have been able to play every single game that I've thrown at it without any modification or upgrade at all. That whole thing is a bit of a myth that tends to get massively over played as a bit of FUD against PC gaming.

Um... why should PC gamers fear next-gen consoles?

Crappy ports does not an apocalypse make.

Admittedly I am concerned about F2P models, on the grounds you get what you pay for. The only good F2P is that rare game that's actually good where money buys nothing more than cosmetic changes. However, I don't see how that is dependent on next gen consoles.
