Cult Classics That Suck

Earthbound. I was incredibly interested in the game when I first heard about it. So I bought it at Gamestop (back when they still sold old games) and played it. It was okay but the game I bought has a damaged save function or something so I couldn't get very far without having to start over. So I decided to hold off on a final opinion on the game.

Then I emulated it a few years later. Played through some of it again but got bored not very long into game. So yeah. Turns out I ended up not being all that impressed with it.

The 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' would disagree with you.

Might want to read what you quoted next time and also do some research on The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
My quote proves my point so why would I need to re-read it or research it.

You said if it sells well it can't be a cult classic. You mentioned no exceptions.
My quote says there are exceptions.
I said Rocky Horror is a cult classic, which it is.

Pretty simple really.
What I was saying is that if a game releases and makes a ton of cash (i.e. fallout 3 or any of the other popular games these mouthbreathers are listing) then it is not a cult classic. Rocky Horror is a cult classic, no argument there. When released, it had a rabid, small fanbase, but did not do well financially. That's pretty much textbook cult classic. This seems to be more just a misunderstanding than an argument.

I doubt this is considered a cult classic but nothing else comes to mind: Team Fortress 2.

Activating Flame Shields in 3...2...1...
TF2 is a ridiculously popular game; it is anything, but a cult classic.
Unfortunately it was the only thing with popularity I could think of that I hated.

So yeah, I am going to go with Deus Ex as well.
So I'm wondering what exactly you think is so bad about it?
I made another post after that one explaining a little further :)

poor graphics yeah, clunky gameplay, some terrible voice acting, but it gives you the choice...
Yeah, agreed. So, the game is clunky, and it looks terrible and sounds terrible too (not that those last two really matter or are anything to do with my opinion of the game personally), but it's good because...

Well, I liked the story, its not William Gibson, but it was fun, especially the 3 different endings, they made sense. . I must admit however that System shock 2, Torment and Thief aged much better.

Parappa average.
Parappa and the other games following it were very enjoyable. It's just that they have no replay value whatsoever. It's something you play for a few hours and put it back on the shelf and pick up again a year or so later.

Also why are criminally popular titles being mentioned in a thread about disagreeing with the legacies of fairly obscure games that are celebrated by a significant amount of people? Since when were games such as Earthbound, Team Fortress, or any FF title "cult classics"? That would be like calling Animal Collective and Arcade Fire "underground".

I tried and tried but I just couldn't get into Fallout 1 and 2. The era of isometric PC RPGs just passed me by, I guess.

I also thought Psychonauts was mediocre at best. Never been a big Tim Schafer fan.

Deus Ex. I'm not joking I couldn't get into it. I'll get flamed.

I'm not sure if this counts, but Deus Ex was boring, looked goddamn horrible, and had almost nothing going for it in my mind.
Don't worry, it's awful by today's standards. Most of the people on the internet who say how amazing it is, either haven't played it for about 8 years and don't realize it doesn't hold up as a good game anymore; or are looking back through rose tinted glasses and refusing to see how bad it is now. (note before people flame me that I didn't say all people, but I do believe for the most part that is the truth) I'm sure it was a great game at its time and I respect that, but that doesn't mean its just as good now when everything it did has been done 10 times better.

So yeah, I am going to go with Deus Ex as well.
I played it in 2008/2009 and was absolutely amazed, no game has ever achieved the same amount of freedom to engage an objective or such excellent level design.

Fallout 1&2 - incredibly tedious turn based combat plus the writing is nothing special. And oh god the beginning of both games is so incredibly tedious you'll be sick of them before you've even gotten anywhere.
You can say the combat is tedious to today's twitchy-esk FPS lunatics but how is the writing nothing special?!
The writing is rather sparse, with not much in the way of well developed characters. To give a concrete example, take the beginning of FO1 - I started it off and was all ready for some story in which I would meet the Vault inhabitants, developing a sense of what the background of my character was along with a reasons to feel attached to the vault so I would care about saving it and also developing a contrast between life in the vault and the harsh wasteland. And what I got was none of that - a brief cinematic telling me to go get the McGuffin and then only a tedious grey tunnel outside the vault with tedious combat with hostile fucking rats. Rats for god's sake. Zero character development, near zero story development, zero reason to care about the vault only one dozen tedious fights with hostile rats. It's absurdly underdeveloped. Even Fallout 3 does introduction better than this and that's just sad because Fallout 3 isn't well written at all.

There really wasn't anything that caught my attention as memorable dialogue, either. Seriously, about the only memorable dialogue I remember is regurgitated Monty Python jokes which were unoriginal and therefor unfunny and also tonally inappropriate.

On the contrary, I find most SNES RPGs gobsmackingly boring, including Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire... to the point where I feel absolutely no drive to continue playing them whatsoever. Earthbound and Super Mario RPG are games that captivate me, however. They feel like they have a lot more soul, while other RPGs feel hollow and devoid of character in comparison.
Wait, are you telling me that my opinion is wrong? ;)

I couldn't get into it. I found it boring. You obviously didn't. I found games like Chrono Trigger to captivate me in ways Earthbound never could, I thought CT had some of the best characters of all time (Frog is still one of my all-time favorite video game characters)

World of Warcraft...

Theyre may be millions of people playing it, but you can consider it a cult classic because the people who play it never see the light of day.

Half-life 1& - again, not as much bad as overrated. I repeat, they are not bad games, simply overrated and hardly as innovative as people claim.
Yet it sparked one of the most innovative games ever which in turn has too many mods to count

I don't know how well it did in terms of money or how well it was recieved, but several people have told me "You should really watch Tropic Thunder"... so I do. And it sucked, Big fat donkey bollocks. Can't see anything good about it.

Deus Ex was awesome by the way, I really don't remember it being clunky or any of that, think I shall play it again soon just to make sure I aint just got fond but distorted memories. Doubt it but we shall conduct some research.

What, because people have different opinions to you?

I agree with that guy anyway, and not just because the "I hate humanity" card pisses me off more than anything, but because it's BORING AS FUCK.

People have different opinions, accept it, don't start hating humanity for it, because lord knows (not that I believe in a lord) that you aren't in any way a superior human being for enjoying a video game, and vise-versa.
This is why im insulting you and the other guy. Your reasons for hating a game is because its BORING AS FUCK. Thats great, really explaining yourself there. I think you are dumb because you are ghey. See how stupid that is? Why cant you give a real reason for not enjoying a game?

Oh yes, I would like to add another to the list of cult classics I don't like, Painkiller. From what I saw it had the level design of Serious Sam and the weapons and atmosphere style of Quake. What you get is something not as good as either. Where Quake has a tight, claustrophobic atmosphere, Painkiller's levels practically gape, the and the predictable walk into room>enemies spawn>kill enemies>leave room thing is too damn predictable and stinks highly of Serious Sam. The enemy design is also a letdown, as they appear to have the abilities of Quake monsters, but their design isn't as cool or varied as Serious Sams, with few monsters being able to attack in the long range department. Ultimately this means with your super-powered weapons and big levels it is pretty easy to keep them at bay, and it gets pretty tedious.

I didn't say your opinion was wrong at all, just that mine is differing. I have difficulty getting into most RPGs on the SNES, for instance I was looking forward to Final Fantasy 3 the other day, and it was certainly cool in places, but... ultimately I couldn't be bothered with it.

Earthbound. Yeah, I said it.

And yes, it's a cult classic, because no one I've known in real life has ever heard of it, yet it gets tons of love on the webbertubes.

Now, that said, I didn't care for it. Mostly the battle system bugged me. I just can't get down with being rushed into choosing my battle actions in an RPG.
