An eminent French cardiologist has triggered an impassioned debate in the medical world over his claim to have discovered a cure for alcoholism.

Dr Olivier Ameisen discovered baclofen had cut addiction in rats

Dr Olivier Ameisen, 55, one of France's top heart specialists, says he overcame his own addiction to alcohol by self-administering doses of a muscle-relaxant called baclofen.

He has now written a book about his experience - Le Dernier Verre (The Last Glass) - in which he calls for clinical trials to test his theory that baclofen suppresses the craving for drink.

Widespread media coverage of his book in France has led to a rush of demands from alcoholics for similar treatment, and some doctors have reported unexpected successes after prescribing it.

But many other specialists are sceptical, warning of the dangers of so-called miracle cures.

Rats are pretty good human analogs.

I saw this before. Works on rats, so it works on humans!

not.

I'm to young to be drunk. In the U.S., anyways. Not in EU!

Alcoholism isn't a goddamn disease, it's not an epidemic either. If they can get a pill that can cause the brain to not want alcohol anymore then I'm all for it/ But people will become dependent on more pills.

Many of the things that really shouldn't require pills to deal with actually require pills. It's kinda BS. Personally I'm against most types of medicine, I won't put anti-depressants, or any other pill of the sort in my body. I take Tylenol cold when I have a cold and that's about it.

Alcoholism is a terrible and sometimes deadly disease. When seeking an alcohol treatment program choosing the right one can be a daunting task. It is important to know what types of alcohol treatment are available. Most alcohol treatment programs will offer a variety of services but often have a form of specialty.

Bet you ten dollars that the media say so, but that they are in fact succumbing to mass hysteria, as the media is prone to do.

Bet you $10 that taking this drug will make you addicted to it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baclofen#Withdrawal_syndrome

Not to mention the enormous number of side effects it seems to bring on.

Why isn't it? A disease is an abnormality in bodily functions. That's all. Nothing more then that. I'd say that fits the bill just fine.

Anything that involves 10 steps clearly isnt worth doing am I right? XD

Seriously though these drugs normaly do more harm than good and addicions can be broken with willpower. Take for example the serious herion addicts that have just got straight cold turkey with occasional pills if the withdrawel symptoms get too bad (not methadone because its also addictive!)

That being said its actually very rare for heroin or cocaine withdrawal symptoms to be fatal whereas alcohol withdrawal can in fact be directly fatal (dont believe me? Check wikipedia ;)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholism#Alcohol_withdrawal)

He used a muscle relaxant...of course he was cured, his muscles were too relaxed to lift the damn bottle! :p

Personally anyone who stupid enough to drink themselves into a stupor, ever, deserves to drop dead.

I mean seriously, you're drinking a toxin...why? It boggles the mind why some people are so unable to run their own lives properly that they have to turn to poisoning themselves. Good Job furthering the human race's ability to survive by killing yourselves slowly and horribly =.=
