I've discovered a dangerous website, "but how is that strange?" you may ask.
Well, allow me to elaborate.

You see, as well as being an avid gamer I also enjoy watching TV a lot. Now, whilst I was watching TV, one of the crappiest adverts I've ever seen came on advertising "finally fast", claiming that it could make my PC run like a dream and all the usual stuff.

So I do a Google search, turns out that this "wonderful program" actually infects you computer with malware/spyware (and viruses, according to one complaint) and it over-exaggerates simple errors so you will buy the full product.

Now, this isn't the worrying thing. What is worrying is the TV advert. A malware program is being advertised on TV, where by it puts a lot of computer illiterate people at risk of being infected with this crap.
They don't know much about PCs and then someone comes on TV and claims they have a magic button to make everything better.

Here's a link to an article with sources and complaints against this website and a video of the advert.

I can only hope the credit crunch hits them before they do much damage...

They actually advertised it on TV? Perfect! That makes them open to a lawsuit for false advertising.

Edit: Hrm. Perhaps that was preemptive. The "Your results may vary" could negate any complaints.

If only a report like this poped up sooner. I got suckered into getting the trial version, found out it was useless and deleted. Next day, my AVG program shows viruses traced back to the program. Not like I have any personal info good enough for them to use, but it is scary to have a spyware program advertised on national TV.

Yeah, it also leaves a program on your PC, mate. Might want to check for that.

But "results may vary" is deliberately intended to mislead the consumer. Perhaps there are still grounds for a lawsuit. No question people like this deserve to be sued.

they are smart in a non smart way. If these people want to go out and infect thousands of people they are smart in doing so. But when these people find out its a virus/ door way to malware they could easily get sued and maybe have a bit of jail time, that is the non smart part

This is the commercial that shows people working on what are clearly Macintoshes right before the appearance of a 'this is for PC computers only' message? I am suddenly glad I never went to the site to laugh at it.

Lets take a look at my magical virus vault. And the top result is...

Infection Type: Warning
Virus Name: Found AdWare.RougeSuspect
Path To File: HKU\S-1-5-21-1343024091-492894223-725345543-1003\Software\Ascentive

Yep. Ascentive Software. The company behind Finally Fast. Why did I not delete it along time ago and simply left it in the vault?

Just be safe, though. I'd suggest you go to your computer's search option, click search all files, make sure in the advanced options tab you have the "search system folders" "search hidden files and folders" and "search sub folders" all checked and search your computer with the keyword "Ascentive".

This is disturbing to say the least. I'm not sure how advertising works, but wouldn't it make sense for them to have to show the advertising board the product and demonstrate it BEFORE the ad make it to television?

What would an advertising board know about malware, spyware and viruses, though?

I just installed a fresh system, and everything is hand-optimized by me (I'm a computer guy, I know what I'm doing). When I saw this thread and that page, I decided to download that crappy program just for the sake of it. I was curious how many registry faults and system errors will it find, where there is none whatsoever. Just to get a laugh.

Then I decided against it. I'm not going to willingly install spyware and other crap on my precious rig. Sadly though, there are millions of other people who are not that computer savvy, and will be screwed over by these evil bastards.

Good scam though, that TV ad is a nice touch, gives them credibility, at least from the people who can't distinguish between a Mac and a PC

/facepalm

You're pretty lucky not to have installed it for kicks there, you know? It gives you a lot of bugs and is very hard to uninstall, according to the complaints in that link at the top there.
