It was based on a poem that described Hell, that was written by a Catholic man during the Renaissance, of course there is going to be Christian imagrey. They aren't going to change the very basis of the source material.
Correct. Homer's Odyssey. An epic poem that's been around a lot longer than God of War...lol.
....wtf...i'm not sure how to say how wrong you are.

so by your logic would Bram Stokers' Dracula be christian because it had a man carrying around a cross and holy water? how about Van Hellsing, the Catholic monks had an entire warehouse under a church.

It's Hell

Of course it's Christian.

And Roman Catholic, too! *thumps chest* Biggin' up the Papacy!

Now, a Dante's Inferno-esque game in the Hindu hell, that would be intresting

The entire concept of hell is based of christianity so of course you'll find religious aspects. As long as i don't have to believe in anything the game tells me to i'm ok with it
Um, just one thing, since everyone else said everything: Christianity did not invent the concept of hell.
Oh? Enlighten me
I basicly meant that nowadays hell is mostly used as a concept for christians where the not so perfect people go, But what is the actual origin then?

I'm pretty sure that since Dante is a bad-ass crusader who is killed, sentenced to damnation, fights Death, and breaks into hell through a portal underneath a church, you can immediately stop useing the phrase, "Based on The Divine Comedy". If your feeling generous, you might be able to say that it is, "Inspired", but even that is pushing it. I wasn't paying much attention, is Beatrice some random lost soul you have to rescue from Hell? Thats just...wrong.

Personally, I can't wait for the third installment in this new franchise, where you look at floating light for 8 hours while being told how awesome God it, and if you press a button to attack, your X Box RRoDths

Plot spoiler! (Because I'm a dick!)
The Devil will use Dante as a tool for entering Paradise, thus paving the way for sequals. What? You couldn't tell from the trailers?

The Devine Comedy
The game will be very loosely based on the book. VERY loosely.
That's rather ironic, since in Dantes Inferno, Dante uses the Devil to enter Heaven (Well...via purgatory at least.)

I highly doubt there is anybody who really knows the "actual" origin of the concept of hell, but hell is a very common religious idea, and there are religions with "hell" that precede Christianity.
For one, I'd like to point out that the Egyptian religion, whatever that was called, dates back to 2500BC with Osiris, the god of their underworld/afterlife.
It's probably a concept that's been with humans for as long as we've existed, possibly even before then by our evolutionary ancestors.

edit: my bad, Ancient Egyptian religion predates Osiris by quite a long time, dating back at least to 3000BC
Yes but i believe modern day christianity gave it the form currently used in games like this, The seas of flames and stuff, We shall never know

Hath you never heard of Dante's Inferno before the game? It's about Hell. I really don't want to get into this because it seems like there's already a lot of misconceptions in this thread already but yeah just read The Divine Comedy. It's actually what brought a lot of people to the Church back in the Renaissance because they read about what Hell would be like (keep in mind that Dante Alighieri was basing this on his imagination) so they were obviously scared of going to such a horrible place after reading his epic. So there will obviously be some Christian themes, but it is not a Christian game. EA has pretty much made that clear. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.127007#2685084]

I havent read the poem so im going off what I saw in the demo and know historically.

The crusades were fought by holy knights looking to take back the holy land and get rich in the process. I think the game is going for the fact that these men felt like they were doing God's work but when Daunte meets death and is on his way to hell he realizes what he has been doing was def. not God's will. He is just as bad as any other murderer but feels ripped off and is going to fight kicking and screaming because he truly believes he should go to heaven.

Obviously the game is going to use Christian imagery, but that doesn't make it Christian.

actualy seas of flame and such are probably more of a result of the industrial revolution and the fact that smelting plants gave probably a very good impression of what hell would be, hot and fiery. Altho in the middle ages preachers liked to spice up sermans with alot of hellfire since alot of people would come for a good show. RANDOM IDEA MAN AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Religion also sounds like random ideas to my ears, Altough the concept of burning in hell and stuff is alot older then that, We kinda went off topic here i believe
