I really hope this is good. The original The Dark Crystal is an amazing movie - with a beautifully crafted, unique world, it's a great showcase for the seemingly lost art of puppetry. The people behind the sequel at least seem appropriately reverent of the original, and it's great that they're bringing back Brian Froud.

What happened to the Genndy Tartokovsky version? he was working on it 5 or 6 years ago even saw some artwork and plot outline and then nothing.

After Samurai Jack and the surprisingly good animated properly animated Clone Wars cartoon he seemed like a good fit

I recently saw Dark Crystal for the first time and am unsure where they can go with the plot but, I can't wait to see ^^

Dark Crystal, Tron ... higher up in the posting somebody mentioned a Labyrinth sequel. I wouldn't mind that but, Bowie has to be in it. He IS the Goblin King after all

I heard that the creator of Samurai Jack (i can't spell his name) is going to be involved in the design process. That alone makes me curious to see this. and i agree that the dark crystal didn't need a sequal but this isn't really a typical sequal. Its not continuing the story of the first movie so much as it's a brand new story set in the WORLD of the Dark Crystal. I think this could work.

Dumb idea - the original was only a so-so movie with a few clever ideas (the pacing/plot were borderline atrocious; only the set/puppet/costume designs were inspired - like the orrery). Perhaps I'm just a Labyrinth partisan, though - I still get hot-and-bothered watching Jennifer Connelly in that movie (I suppose that makes me as bad as the Goblin King/David Bowie and his sexual fixation on an underage girl).

Of course, The Neverending Story kicks both their asses.

Sounds a bit like they're less making a sequel and more creating a new movie in that world. Sort like how most don't define the Lord of the Rings as a sequel to The Hobbit.

...If you have a rich enough world, a "sequel" doesn't necessarily need to follow suit at all aside from taking place in the same general world as its source, or having some loose ties to the original... ...A story can be completely new and hold it's own despite being set in the same world. I wish more sequels and follow-ups would take on this mentality.
I totally agree with this statement and am therefore hoping for the best. But on to the bigger problem then just creating a remake:
The Spierig brothers are directing. Does anyone else have a problem with this?? These guys have only really made some low budget junk, and that's not even beginning to mention the horrific pile of bat guano (pun possibly intended) that Daybreakers was! I am not at all psyched about having these two at the helm, but we'll see what happens. Keeping tabs on this one.

The UrSkeks are gone forever. Commence your choking.
...Fuck, I forgot about that. I guess I'm the one that needs a good choking. Let's hope I don't go the way of David Carradine.

After all the 3D Avatar CGI bonanza, we're finally getting a nice wholesome puppet movie again. Thank, Christ.

Let's just hope this director knows his ass from his elbows.
