So i just joined a dating site for the lulz (also my friend forced me to, but what the hell ey)
Just wondering what are your veiws on dating sites? Do you find them pathetic or a brilliant idea? Are you a member of one? If so have you had any luck?

edit: Just to note, the site im signed up with is full of chavs and sluts (those of my age anyway). I dont know what that says about my age group, the girls in my area, the site itself or the people who use it..

Not tried them, although I don't see why people shouldn't give it a try.

It depends on what it is. Sites like eHarmony and Match.com are there to provide better looking alternatives to going out to bars and clubs where it is extremely difficult to find someone you would consider normal or sane.

I don't really care about much. Mind you do browse a few personals for the lulz.

Let's face it, online dating sites is like trying to go over a minefield to get to a gold mine.
(Mmm...metaphorical, or if I'm misinformed, whatever it is.) You have to dodge all the swindlers and golddiggers to get to the sweet chocolate (if at all) on the other side.

I find them pathetic IMO.

I'm sorry but it just looks 'odd' to me. Real people should should going out and looking around, actually interacting with others. Not sitting by their computer and rely on some website to find their love.

No offense to anyone who is using a dating site, I just find it very odd.

I'm pretty sure the wedding I have to go to in a month is due to a dating site. Match.com I think. Those two people would probably talk it up real big. And they seem pretty happy with each other. He was having trouble meeting people, because he is a big gamer and isn't very social. So it was a good alternative to trying to do something he was uncomfortable with.

Just doesn't work, people should become very good friends before considering a romantic relationship.

They all suck.

And it's weird...
It's like Facebook, but for dating.
I always found facebook was useful for dating, joining useless groups and spending hours on the digial crack that is bewjeled! Oh and something about friends..

I'm a registered member of OK Cupid...

http://www.okcupid.com/

Joined it just for the hell of it a couple of months back. Not because I need to, it was just that the site has loads of free personality tests and stuff, so I'd go there for the lulz. Eventually I decided to register on there just because, I figured, why not? It's not as if I need to go on dating sites, I managed to pull this girl in a bar last week on a night out with friends and I'm not exactly socially inadequate. But you don't need to be to join dating sites. I've been chatting to a few girls, two in particular, through the site and they seem like pretty cool people to talk to. There's a whole stereotype of people going on dating sites because they're desperate or socially inept, and that just isn't the case in real life. It's fun, it's something new, and if you do meet the love of your life through it then where's the harm? And that sums up my feelings about speed dating too, for the record (which interestingly is something I've never tried, but would be up for sometime...).

On a side note, oddly enough, Monday night I was at a meeting with some friends in a film-making group at university, and we filmed a couple of short improvised comedy sketches, the first of which was based around someone meeting a girl from a dating site in a bar and talking tothe wrong person :).

Instead of dodging the gold diggers, become one!

Find a rich woman/man to shack up with and take all their money. That is what that site is actually for, in case anyone is short of a few bob.

I prefer going out and meeting girls. I ind it much easier to connect with a potential romantic option in person. Its also easier to find out whether or not they are into you in real life. You can gauge their reactions to what you say in their facial expressions and so on.

Just out of interest, no offence meant, but what would you say about someone like me then, who is a member of a dating site yet is also quite socially active and has no problems IRL at dealing with the opposite sex? The thing is, the idea of sad loners at their computers is a sadlky perpetuated stereotype that just isn't true. Plenty of people on dating sites are perfectly normal people who have social lives and friends, and simply decided to try online dating as an alternative to meeting people in public first. Also, I invite anyone here to watch the 'Speed Dating' scene from the movie Hitch, then after listening to what Will Smith has to say on the matter, come and talk to me then ;).

There is someone out there for everyone, so I suppose it really doesn't matter what method you use to meet them.

Ok I can't speak for the rest of the world, but in malta it's kind of a mixed opinion. On one hand, we've got such a tiny population finding anyone decent is a miracle in itself, on the other, they are the places you are most likely to get a date.
I'm on one or two, and between them their are maybe 50 maltese people.

Well I have nothing wrong with that, this is a very touchy subject for me. Again I mean no offense I just find it 'different' than the traditional way. Though I give it credit, those websites do work and match people together pretty well.
