i can understand its hard but delaying your game wont do anything good.

he needs to keep on working on his game, fast and show the world that his project is not the same piece of shit that war z is.
Because rushing development has never backfired.

The world doesn't believe his project is shit, they just know War Z was.

The best time to release a game is when it's good and ready.

Not really bothered about either game anymore since both games suck
Oh... yes, because that is SO relevant to a case of plagiarism and advertisement fraud.

Poor guy's an upcoming game designer worried about his reputation in a tough industry. I don't care how good DayZ is or isn't (never played it), I'd be frikken upset too!

The gaming community is an All-Stand-Together sort of lot over this kind of controversy. I can see DayZ getting the majority of support now that Hammerpoint Interactive's scam has been blown wide open.

I've seen games ape gameplay mechanics, clone entire games and even try to create franchise knock-offs using suspiciously similar characters, it's just seems to be kind of what happens in this industry. But this one... this just seems all the more dastardly and underhanded for some reason.
It's because of the way Hammerpoint went about all this. They have been outright lying about things, and then blame the gamers for "not understand." Like... what? Did the CUSTOMERS write the game description on Steam, stating features that don't even exist yet? No, Hammerpoint did, that's not the community's fault. They're taking a very "us against you" stance on this game, which is not something that most developers would even dream of doing. We're the ones writing your paychecks, Hammerpoint, if you lie to us, it doesn't sit well.
Has Dean Hall said whether or not he is going to sue those guys?

I mean, with the evidence in the link, he might have a fair chance at winning a libel suit. Because his reputation was hurt by this extraordinary piece of crap.

my post focuses on his statement that they wont work at all on day z until the shitstorm with war z has settled.

you know:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121227-The-War-Z-Controversy-Depresses-DayZ-Creator

we already had a conversation about it, remember?
Considering how small the development team is and how personally the issue is affecting the lead developer - waiting for it to die down is a great move.

Forcing production of what should be art or an engrossing experience is not the way to generate a quality product.

I want to see this succeed because it's a game type that doesn't exist in any respectable form presently and I have seen enough development problems and stressful work environments ruin what would otherwise be great games.

I usually tell developers to suck it up in these scenarios but this really sucks for him. His reputation is stained for something he didn't even do and many, many people will confuse the two titles. It may well hurt HIS game when he launches.
This other guy came in, tried to cash in on all the work the Day Z developer did and stained his reputation and hurt his game's chances at the same time. The War Z dev should be run out of town.

Looks like The War Z is to gaming market what Asylum studios is to the movie market. short quick cashins with similar title so people would get confused while caring 0 for their reputation or audience. remember transmorfers? yeah, these guys are responsible.

Dean Hall sounds off on what the debacle has done to his reputation.
Wow, this HAS done a number on his reputation. As an uninformed gamer, I actually thought that "The War Z" WAS "Day Z" released as a standalone game, and thought poorly of "Day Z" for it.

Oops.
Same here, except I actually do consider myself an informed gamer for the most part (I say for the most part because I simply couldn't care less about zombie related media at this point and conciously avoid even news of it when I can).

I heard they were making a standalone Day Z and then, lo and behold, War Z comes out. I figured it was a little quick after the "standalone Day Z" announcement but given that I knew Day Z was a mod built on an already existing game, I figured the turnaround could/would be quick as well. It was only after release and news started coming out about just how bad War Z was that it was made clear by reading the associated articles that it actually wasn't the Day Z game.

At this point, I'd say that Hall has every right to be upset. Sure, amongst the already in the know fans of the gamem Day Z will be getting the intended support, but amongst those not in that group it's likely that once the Day Z game does come out it will be the one seen as the clone/rip off. Either that, or maybe it will be seen as some sort of sequel. And that's not even considering the fact that the bad taste War Z has left in everyone's mouth will automatically transfer to Day Z at this point given the (mistaken) association.

I'm not sure if I would call Terraria a Minecraft clone as the two games had two completely different styles. Terraria was much more invested into exploration and having epic boss fights whereas Minecraft was much more oriented around building cool shit. Not to mention that Terraria was in 2D.

OT: It's a shame that DayZ is getting as much bad rep as it is because of WarZ, and hopefully they'll finish development sooner rather than later.

I really hope this doesn't get the Day Z creator too down, I'm really enjoying Day Z and hoping he'll get the stand alone release ready soon!

it is a minecraft clone. the only difference is that it focused in the end on exploration and combat.

you still need to gather resources, fight monsters at night and craft shit (buildings and items) in it like in minecraft.
Lots of games are blatent Minecraft clones, Terraria and Wurm Online aren't them.

Wurm was in development before Minecraft, the fact that Minecraft's creator founded the team behind Wurm but left to create Minecraft is a big indication of this. If you consider Terraria a clone you may as well go the full hog and call Minecraft an InfiniMiner or Wurm Online clone.

My question as well. I'm surprised at the fact that he hasn't done so already, unless money and/or time constrains him. Even so, I look at who made that piece of shit War Z and check their history...and...

Mr. Hall, in the unlikeliest of scenarios that if you are reading this, I implore you:

[HEADING=1]SUE THESE MONEY GRUBBING BASTARDS INTO OBLIVION. IF YOU DO, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT YOU WIN, THE PIZZA PARTY FOR THE DEV CREW OF DAYZ IS ON ME![/HEADING]

Just like to address a few of these 'cause of logic and such. I won't go into things that may or may not have been extensions of the formula, more "inspired by" then "rip off" (Terraria, Ace of Spades, maybe a few others to a point) Because that's a tricky line to draw in the sand, but there are a few that seem incredulous:
Roblox came out in 2005. If you're suggesting that they ripped off Minecraft, you're suggesting that they had to travel through time to do it. If anything, they're ripping off LEGO.
Minicraft was actually developed by Notch as well. I mean, you can easily rip off yourself, I suppose, but it's a bit different, isn't it?
But here's the more important bit:
minecraft had the luck to get their product halfway out in the market (and declare it alpha, then beta and then gold)
thats why i dont support his idea to just twiddle his thumbs until the war z debacle settled down.
I'm honestly confused here: What exactly does getting a product in the market change in this situation? The number of ripoffs that can leach your cash, the fact people mistake your game for another game that's aping you to a real shitty degree, what? It's not like selling the product is going to make any ripoff merchants say "Oh, fuck, shit's gettin' real now." That should be proven by, I dunno, Minecraft?
Unless you're suggesting that getting it into the market would solve the problem of the game being mistaken for War Z, to which I say - Really? Really?
he is not that "new"
After leaving the air force, Hall was employed as a producer at Sidhe Interactive in Wellington, New Zealand and worked on Speed Racer: The Videogame.

He later created DayZ, a zombie survival horror mod for the ArmA 2 tactical shooter game by Bohemia Interactive.

Hall briefly left the industry to return to the army before returning for a contract at Bohemia Interactive on ArmA 3. After the success of the mod, Hall started work at Bohemia as an employee in the position of Project Lead of the standalone version of DayZ
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Hall_(game_designer)
Ok, so he isn't that new. Well proven.
And now I ask the question that sprang to mind; And this means... What, exactly?
I mean, if you're just saying it to say "Hey, you're wrong on this part in particular," I 've got no problems with that. Hell, I do that sometimes. Hell, I'm doing it right now with that Roblox crap up there.
But if you're saying it to prove some sort of a point, what point are you trying to prove? Honest question.

People who pirate software keep saying 'coping something is not stealing as you have not deprived teh owner of a physical object.'

Clearly this act of coping has deprived the developer of Day Z of something...

The WarZ hate bandwagon is kind of ridiculous. Yeah we get it, they put up false advertisement on Steam, and they got nailed for it. That's about it. Aside from that The WarZ is a zombie survival game that releases regular content updates. Just another bandwagon of hate.
