Yep. You heard me. It is doing something that very few Mods have ever done. It is following in the footsteps of mods like The Ball and such.

Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price.

Thoughts?

I'm excited. This is the reason why I never bothered with the mod. It gained so much populatiry so quickly, that this seemed inevitable to me. I will be keeping an eye on this, that's for sure!

I wonder which one will turn out better thewarz, the standalone version of dayz or the original dayz mod.

Expected and hopefully successful, though i would think they would beef it out a little for a commercial release.

Unless its freeware of course, but it seems unlikely.

This is nice and all but i'll stick to the Arma version . ..because it's Arma . . .not just zombies. (I think people forget that part.)

Since dayz came out ARMA's 2 sales & popularity went sky high.

OT: Finally, I'm hoping that it will come for consoles too .

Popularity of the mod went skyhigh. Most I know that play DayZ don't touch Arma because "It sux balls."

Not exactly the kind of popularity or player base I want the game to have.

Also as popularity of the mod increased, quality of the mod player base decreased.

I guess this is good news to people who like the game. I don't. I don't like zombie. Besides older Resident Evil games. And only because at the time the market wasn't infested with them. They were novelty. Now they're everywhere and I'm sick of them. Just like modern military shooters. It's fun the first couple of times.

I wonder if people know which mod became one of the most famous standalone online games ever made?

I heard about this yesterday I think and I think its good news. Im kind of surprised that it wont be a new option with arma 3 but I can understand Rockets reasoning of the game needs to go in a different direction. Im also a fan of the minecraft business model because it means more money is going to get put in to the game over time, meaning more content in the end.

Plus as a stand alone game he will be able to fix a lot of the hacking, exploiting, and duping people are doing right now.

I'm assuming Counter Strike or some sort of Unreal Tournament type game.
OT: I wonder how similar the engine will be to Arma. The way Arma plays really puts me off playing this, so I might check out the full release.

I am actually more surprised the mod is still ongoing, if you didn't know the DayZ dev has been full time employed by Bohemia Interactive (creators of ARMA) for some time now.
I was wondering how long this will remain a standalone project before they make it an official company IP.

Obviously this is very good for development of DayZ and Bohemia, because if they do this justice they will be sitting on a goldmine.

Oh and mod -> full game transition happens more often then you think, heck the entire Valve roster came from mods, devs just don't like to tell you because it makes their upcoming game look all new and exciting.

Well OP's avatar kind of summed up my reaction. I have not gotten into Day Z yet but if it was released with full game polish oh man that would be great.

Gotta agree. While I can see some appeal in the general concept of the game, I am so sick of zombies that I wouldn't even consider trying the game.

If this follows the Minecraft-style alpha development, then I'm all in. A friend of mine has been wanting me to get into it, but buying a whole game for just a mod + the clunkiest UI known to modern gaming, has kept me away.

Fingers crossed that this goes well.

Seems like the best way to go, especially when most of the people who have bought the game you've modded are only in it for the actual mod and don't even touch the main game.
Something just seems a bit wrong to me about that...

Oh well, I wish him the best of luck in his endeavours, but fixing it's fan-base isn't going to be easy.

Never played DayZ because it seemed a bit to shifty and the fact i had to buy a game i didn't want to play it did not sit well with me.

As it's own game, yeah that is going to be great but still going to wait in the sidelines for awhile to see what sticks and what flies.

I hate to wear hipster glasses but I miss old DayZ, when it wasn't just free for all deathmatch with zombies. Maybe the two sides of the community will be split, then I might get back into it.

I presume you mean Counter Strike?

As for the zombies, I agree with you. They're getting very stale very quickly.

Am I the only one that thinks that DayZ is overrated?

Don't get me wrong I love the idea and the settings but it's just so goddamn slow/badly designed.

For me it comes down to the lack of [decent]team-play and the lobby which takes between 30seconds and 10 mins to allow joining! Also the fact that everyone on the game is a massive tool and hides all the vehicles/snipe you through the grey-block buildings.

I assume they fixed the zombie glitches? Or added more vehicles at least?!

I can see why people like it, but for me I'd prefer a 2-32 player coop on a GTA-sized map that focussed more on team work and survival

Secretly I just really dislike the ARMA engine. Doesn't interest me, too much "simulation" and not enough satisfaction!
