Dead Island Dev Could Have Released Wrong Version to Steam

Technically-minded PC gamers have poked around in Dead Island's code and uncovered what could be the gaming mistake of the year.

It seems that the PC version of Dead Island [http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Island-Pc/dp/B004PAGJMO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1315321892&sr=8-3] isn't behaving quite like you'd expect, with people reporting bugs by the bushel, as well as other oddities like turning on no-clip at the touch of a button. Players have rightfully asked how something so obviously unfinished could have been released, and it seems that the answer is that the Steam version never should have.

A curious player started poking around the game's code, and discovered that the Steam version of the game is actually a developer build. There seems to be some dispute over whether this is a development build of the Xbox 360 version released by accident, or a master development build which all the other versions sprung from. Nevertheless, the consensus seems to be that someone has released the wrong version to the public, and that is what is causing all the problems.

None of this is confirmed just yet, although it would be a much smaller PR disaster for developer Techland and publisher Deep Silver if it were. It's one thing to make a mistake a put out the wrong version, but it's quite another to release a thoroughly broken and unfinished game on purpose, and while neither option is especially good, the former is undeniably less bad. We've reached out to Techland and Deep Silver for comment, and will update the story if/when we hear back.

(Thanks to awesomeClaw [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/awesomeClaw] for the tip.)

Oh lord, someone messed up bad. There is no way turning on noclip with a button press was intended to be a release feature. I'd wager anything this is a dev build.

Ah... I knew it.

I just knew this game was going to be a mess.

Knew it, knew it, knew it.

Its a dev build, definitely. Good laugh though, hitting Y for noclip amused me for 5 mins.

Fix on its way [http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/09/06/dead-island-proper-released-later-today/]

Still, thanks for playtesting Americans :)

Edit - My game just updated though can't test due to being locked.

Edit 2 - And the update has seemed to screw up the game even more.

Ah, so the pre-purchased, pre-loaded version I bought and downloaded yesterday may well be the wrong one.

Way to go, Techland. Fix that shit, damn it.

EDIT: Yay for fix, then. And yes, thanks to the US for playtesting :p

Just this once, I am grateful for the Australian release delay.

Thanks for the playtesting, America!

Release after release it seems like it's a good idea not to buy games on the release day. Hell, the release month.

I'm just glad that the people in the game industry just make games.
Can you imagine if these bozos were designing bridges or buildings?
They all seem to take this "they'll all buy it anyway" mentality which has caused many of them to drop the ball or just cut corners without any regard for the consumers who keep them in business.

... How does this even happen? Did nobody bother to check "Hey, let's do a dry run of the final product that's on steam before we release it to the public to make sure it works OK"?

Damn you gaming press, why do you always tell the developers about this shit and ruin all the fun?!

I would smack you if i hadn't actually chuckled at that >_>

OT: There's not really much to say about this. Just pray they don't make such mistakes in the future.

Edited for typos -.-

I'm guessing it was a dev version, not just a bad game, if it was this bad the reviews would have reflected that, and it would have a score more like Alpha Protocol's

My brother bought it from green man gaming for 35 bucks, and he's been playing it for fifteen hours now without a problem and it looks gorgeous. Sorry if that deflates your sense of vindication a bit. The non-whoops version is, while not flawless, fine. Tentatively I say it's looking pretty darned good.
