Now, I may be a little late to the party, but I've just recently picked up a little gem I found for $5 called "Dead Rising," a supposedly early title for the 360.

Holy......shit, this game is awesome!

Yeah, I realize that everything is a weapon and the storyline is cheesy at best, but I haven't had this much fun killing zombies since I purchased Left 4 Dead! Even better, what other game allows you to slam a shower-head on top of a zombie's skull, spraying blood outward appropriately?

What with all of the news of Dead Rising 2 coming to the Escapist recently, I have literally only just heard about the sequel. Feeling a bit overwhelmed at this point, I feel it is my duty to complete a game such as this, as the sequel looks to be a vast improvement!

I suppose to add discussion value, what is a fairly well-known game, recent or otherwise, that you have just picked up and/or started playing? If that doesn't quite fit in with the topic I provided myself, or if you have played the game, what is your favorite weapon to bash, slice, or overall kill zombies with? I feel that it is important as gamers that we accept things for face-value, and not let them "die out with the times." I can't believe I had never heard of this game before a few days ago....

To answer the question myself, I would have to say the Broadsword you get from the medieval weapons shop near the grocer.

Speaking of which, I will never forget Steven, the grocery store owner.... "THIS IS MY STOOOOORE!!!!!"

I only played this for a while at my friends house ages ago, so my memory may be fuzzy, but was this the one where you could just mow people down with a lawnmower? Cause if so, that was awesome.

HEHE, welcome to the future 5 years ago!

Borderlands has no real plot/story for you, so just relax and let the ride take you into the waves.....

Either way, don't waste your money on these new games.....

All the cool kids are talkin bout how bein a pirate is kewl.

So I leave you to your own decisions.

"what is a fairly well-known game, recent or otherwise, that you have just picked up and/or started playing?"

FFXIII

The Arcade Tomb Raider

Mafia II

and so many others. I can't list them all, that would be more work than I can justify.

Thanks for your dumb thoughts!

I loved that game right up until 8 hours in when I ecnountered the psychopaths... I can't beat them and I just got tired of the game after those guys.

Yes! I just found the lawnmower while I was playing yesterday! It's red and cuts through zombies like nobody's business!

Aw....did the time constraints turn you off? I know they take a little getting used to, but I still have time to kill zombies in-between the main missions...

Otis' constant beeping on the walky-talky is very annoying as well.

The reason you probably didn't hear about the game is that is was a very early release on the 360 and it really divided the crowd. People seemed to either love it or hate it. That and its gamestyle is pretty unique that most people give it a glance and just put it down. It did get a lot of press and lots of people were talking about the game when it was out, the problem is that like I said there is no real middle ground in terms of liking the game and because of that talk just died out really fast.

Also sorry to burst your bubble, but I'd look up some of the reactions to the Dead Rising 2 previews, a lot of reviewers who have played the preview said they were somewhat disappointed by the fact that it is literally the same thing just with some improvements. Hell I was even shocked to hear the story is damn near the same. In a mall zombies are being under control, shit hits the fan, you escape while all the other survivors around you die, hole up in a command center in the back of the mall, a lady watches monitors to tell you where to go over a walkie, you go through vents to get to the main part of the mall...etc.

I personally didn't like the game, bosses were just a kick in the balls, hell the first guy can wtf pwn you so easily. I remember my first crack at him I tried to just run up there and take a crack at him with a bat and he jump kicked me in the face and I went flying across the zone. So I was pretty much forced to shoot at him and the gun mechanics are pretty bad. That and I wasn't a fan of the time, why not just make it a progressive game, I don't want to have to redo everything because time is over or I died.

As far as old games I have just picked up goes...
I picked up Condemned: Criminal Origins for the 360 last week, popped it in when I got home...found myself quite enthralled once I got used to the visual style, and beat it in two sittings. (The second to last level was fantastic, especially the first half of it). So I went and picked up the second. Which is awaiting a free two day span for it and I to spend some quality time.

I've got Dead Rising sitting on my shelf, staring woe-eyed at me. It's my roommates copy, and she has yet to beat it (though the last time I saw her play it was 2 years ago) and she doesn't want me playing it till she's done... but if there's a sequel coming out soon, perhaps I'll just have to play it when she's not around. I've heard good things, apart from the comment from kman123...

And as far as weapons go... Crowbars seem to be tried and trusted friends of mine in many games. Especially when kneecaps are involved.

All excellent points! While the gun aiming does take a little bit of getting used to, as well as the psychopaths being harder than a diamond in an ice storm (I'm looking at you, Cliff.), I still do have a great amount of fun in just killing the zombies and taking pictures!

If you are referring to the first psychopath you see, Kent, the photographer, then yes, his kick will send you sprawling onto the linoleum. Thank you for your in-depth analysis of the game good sir!

Yeah, I am a bit late, it's sad really... As for Condemned, that game was scary! Scarier than some of the "horror" games of today. Fortunately I don't have to deal with that in Dead Rising, because the comedic value to be had is enough to lighten the mood.

Good for you! Bash those kneecaps with your crowbar! The....[sub]Combine[/sub]......won't know what hit them! You should totally play Dead Rising before picking up the sequel! Frank West needs your help in ridding the mall and uncovering the true story!

You can beat zombies in the head with a bowling ball!!!

Take the risk, play the game when your roommate isn't there!

Another excellent point! The time constraints that the game forces you to stick by to get the best ending is not one of the most forgiving aspects in the world, but if one can look past that, then mindless fun can be head smashing zombies over the head with 2 x 4's or lead pipes!

I was skateboarding through the food court, surrounded by zombies! How is that not awesome?!?

I picked up the same game recently and loved it too. I got it for the wii though, so a lot of positive changes have been made, e.g. no time limit, good gun control, no beeping walkie-talkie. Shame they cut out the camera, but I'm having too much fun whacking zombies to care.

Just a word of advice, all the bosses have a specific weapon you can easily kill them with. Here's a few.

The snipers: quickstep smoothie with a katana or any other quick weapon.
The first time you fight Carlos in the food court: wait for him on the corner of the platform he's on and use a stun gun on him when he goes to the edge of the corner.
Guy with the shopping cart: long reach weapons like the battle axe.
The guys with the MG on the truck: the uzi, found in a fountain or on top of a store in Paradise Plaza.
The cultists: Either the pistol or the uzi works great. Just aim for head level and pan back and forth.
Carlos in the truck under the mall: I like the battle axe or the longsword. You need to be able to hit him through the van.
The fat cop lady: I just used a katana on her, I only fought her once or twice.
The clown: I use a shotgun for ranged and a butcher knife with quickstep to run up and cut him when he coughs.

I can't remember any other bosses, but if you post them, I'll try and help.

I loved every aspect of Dead rising, In fact, believe it or not, I'm a bigger Dead rising fanboy than I am TF2.

Seriously, I LOVED that game, literally everything was a weapon, and almost always unique, hell the BOSS items are possibly some of the most beastly weapons in a game.

Also, if you are just starting out, or even half-way through go look up Benzais "FAQ-You"
of the game, it's essentially a video of a crazy French guy giving tips about the game that will be a MASSIVE help to you. (Although, it does contain MILD spoilers.)

but seriously, google dat shit.

Only thing I hated about the first Dead Rising is the HORRIBLE aiming system for guns. Like.. SERIOUSLY!
You used guns? I was too busy fighting zombies with trashcans, umbrellas, lawnmowers, and traffic cones to bother.

OT: Two things that bugged me about the game were... well, the AI. And the fact that despite killing the convicts, THEY COME BACK. It gets annoying as hell, considering the game revolves around escorts. Everything else was just... awesome.

I'm considering buying Dead Rising 2 for PC (I actually played the first off a friend's Xbox)... Y'all figure that's a good move? And, just sort of curious, is online the only way to co-op? (for PC, I mean) I've seen other PC games have split-screen (however that works), and it got me curious...

Sure, it was great fun, but after a few hours I started to find it so repetitive. Many of the weapons just slashed or bashed, the guns weren't worth using, and there were tons of gag weapons that were essentially useless. Once you strip those out, the amount of weaponry is more limited than it first seems, and while it is fun to use it the infinitely spawning hordes leave you with no real feeling of progress. Around about the fifth hours of non-stop violent murder you start to think "Fucking hell, just how many people were in this mall?!".

I got bored of the game, and gave it to a friend. Who, by the by, absolutely loved it and is perfectly capable of spending entire nights doing nothing but killing zombies with the scythe. He's a little bit...disturbed, though. He loved the look of Naughty Bear, but didn't buy it because you weren't able to rape other bears...

Hmm. Well, over the weekend I picked up two games from a bargain bin for £7.99 each - Street Fighter 4 (the fairly well known one) and Blue Dragon (less well known). Of the two, I prefer Blue Dragon - it's a big JRPG by the same people who made Lost Odyssey. The story is rubbish, the design is very kiddy, and the dialogue is painful, but it's still hella fun. Interesting combat options and levelling system, and the way it handles classes is excellent.

I love that weed wacker thing that you impale them with then spin them around knocking over other zombies it's great.
