I liked it. I thought the atmosphere was good, some of the horror aspect did fall flat. If you compared this to the Aliens movies this would be between Alien and Aliens.

I loved it. it was a fun shooter. It wasn't really a horror game, but it was a great action 3rd person shooter. Tons of really jumpy scare moments and decently atmospheric.

Was fun, my first horror video game (I don't even watch horror movies)
I thought one part was quite predictable but that is just my ruined media saturated mind that can find plot devices.

Anyone that hasn't completed the game, don't read any further.
So what do you think the ending meant for the game? The part with the alien language flashing when he was flying away in the shuttle. I seriously hope it wasn't just one last scare attempt that meant nothing, because I saw it coming a mile away. I was wondering if it meant Isaac was either infected/influenced still. or something was on board with him. Either way I hope it is in DS2 I really want to play that.

I thought it was a really fun shooter that was very atmospheric and very scary.

Just like Resident Evil 4.

It was a good game in my opinion. It wasn't as scary as many people claimed it would be, but it certainly was a strange and new twist on the 3rd person shooter genre.

I loved Deadspace, it scared the hell out of me and made me a nervous wreck the whole time. What a lot of people say it relies on shock scares but I disagree, what REALLY got me scared was the atmosphere. They watched aliens a lot or something because they had the music ques just right.

To those who said it's not scary I'm going to wager that they don't really get immersed into games, I really really got pulled in and the creaking of the metal, the ambient sounds and clicking in the vents always had me on the edge of my seat. Then you turn around, the music kicks up and there's a monster in your face trying to eat it off.

I liked it a lot. My first play through was great, I rented it and spent 2 days non stop on Hard. Really got into it. I didn't find it scary since they tell you with music when you're in danger, but still there's parts that are very intense (like when there's a lot of babies, and a big brute, and a bunch of normal necromorphs in the medical area). After beating it, I both restarted for all upgrades achievement and started again on Impossible, going for the one gun achievement at the same time. Sadly I could only get to Chapter 9/10 in both those games before I had to return it. Since the game is so cheap now tho, I'm seriously considering getting it.

It's a good game overall, it's not the absolute scariest game or the best third person shooter, but it's solid and definitely worth playing. If you let yourself get sucked in, you should enjoy the atmosphere and the story. I love hearing the comments that rip on this game every time it comes up.

"Sure, there were parts that made me jump, and the atmosphere was creepy, and I shit my pants once or twice, but it totally wasn't scary."

I found it to be average actually. The limb-blasting off thing was good though and some of the monsters have great designs.
Here's some of my problems:
There's some bits where you see living people around the place and it's hard to tell if they're real or Issac is just imagining shit.
The start is fairly predictable too.
The difficulty curve seemed to just jump up halfway through and you have to defend Issac's girlfriend which caused me to quit out of annoyance and I haven't gone back since.
The characters... they were ok, but I think if they kept one or both of the other men from the start it could have helped.
Was a bit scary but I have found Alan Wake and Condemned to be more atmospheric and threateningly scary respectively.
There's a few more annoying bits in the game as well but that's what I'm leaving it at those.

So, over-rated I think.

Edit: Also I think I grew to dislike Issac.

I enjoyed it. Flawed in places perhaps, such as some of the bosses and on-rail sections, but overall an enjoyable game.

And fucking creepy in places. Actually I'm gonna go ahead and admit I was scared here and there. While it perhaps relies on making you jump more than actually terrifying you for the most, it's still a fun game. And I liked the upgrade system.

The plot twist is evident if you know what the first letter of every chapter is *hint hint*

Think, acrostic poem
Yeah, but did anyone honestly not figure that out after playing for about, say, 5 minutes? Obvious twist is obvious.

I actually thought the anticipation made it scarier the second time around. It wasn't really that scary for me the first time.

I liked it. While I've only found a couple genuinely scary games in my life, this game at least manages to do what Doom3 should've done in the creepiness department. I was absorbed into the gameplay, and loved every minute. A game doesn't have to be the best game ever to be awesome, and this one is definitely awesome in my book. The complete feeling of isolation is so well-done that it manages to make jump-scares more effective than they should be because these jump-scares can actually RIP YOUR FACE OFF! I can't wait for 2.

Gameplay was fine, if unoriginal. The dismemberment mechanic was a refreshing change from the tired old 'insta-kill headshot, anywhere else and they don't even notice'. Zero gravity was fun and well executed, particularly in the 'tumbledryer' boss fight, plus it was the 1st ever game in which I'd heard, or more appropriately, not heard, the effects of a vacuum so realistically implemented; you could still hear Isaac grunt loud and clear but anything happening outside his helmet was considerably muffled.

Unfortunately, as a horror game, It only ever startled me and that was only when those play dead monsters jumped up when I got close and even then, it was less effective than my sister sneaking up behind me and poking me in the ribs. The scariest it ever got was when I met my first monster and had to run for dear life. Then I picked up my first weapon - which also somehow imbued me with the powers of Arm Flailing and Foot Stomping - and from then on, I was just casually strolling from room to room, redecorating the walls with zombie innards and selling my excess ammo.

The main character was just a dumb, grunting drone who was about as sympathetic as a paving slab - yes, even when he puts his hand on his helmet at the end as if to say "grief simulation active"!

Plotwise, everything the game was having me do seemed utterly pointless because the ship was fucked, the crew all either dead or zombified and it's orbit decaying so when I asked myself what I would do in this situation, the answer was always "Set the self-destruct and get the fuck out!".

It kept my interest long enough for me to finish it once, didn't play it again.

Dead Space is actually worth it.
It is horrifying, but for each individual, that means something different XD
Well, it is definately tense, moreso on higher difficultys. The improvised weapons feel a bit forced altho this is the future.
Also the scare really comes from higher difficultys, where normal monsters can survive all your gunfire and slash half your health away with one attack...then you will see them with different eyes. And if you played it though before, you know what´s to come.
But I dunno, it could be "scarier" with just a little artistic tweaks and monster behavior.
The parts with the one you cannot kill for example where generally a good move towards that, but Dead Space sometimes felt like Run Like Hell for the PS2 (trap big unbeatable Monster in Chamber and activate to get rid off)...if you haven´t played it, do it. It´s a good horror game with weird controls but managable, nice puzzles and a cool weapon upgrade game. Also nice story.
