Rachel's slap on the back was much harder than what Carter thought it would be. He looked at his shoulder.

Much better.

She told him to take it easy but Carter shook his head.

"Sorry but I can't. Ya take it easy and ya get killed. Besides I need all the money I can get."

"why's that? surely you can't be that desparate for money?" Rachel signaled for another round of drinks and awaited the story.

"Actually I am."

Carter put on his shirt and continued the story.

"When I was younger I had to take care of my younger brother and sister. We got abandoned by my parents when we were pretty young. So I took it upon myself to take care of them. I stole, mugged...I did whatever I needed to to make sure that we had something to eat and somewhere to live. I put them through school. I didn't go to school. Anyways, when they graduated high school they wanted to go to college but I didn't have the money to let them. So I found out about DC, entered, made a name for myself and sent them both to university. I'm paying for them both. They said that they would get jobs and pay but I told them not to. I want them to focus on school and nothing else. So until their tuition is payed off I'm gonna do as many DC matches as I need to."

Carter looked at his shoulder.

"So why are you doing DC matches Rachel?"

Wes crawled out of his chair, gritting his teeth at the pain in his arm. He hadn't noticed the four bullet wounds until the adrenaline stopped flowing, but he felt them now. Walking into the bar, he sat down and held his bicep to stop the bleeding from three of the shots. However, one of the shots had cut clean through his forearm, leaving a hole from which blood was now dripping down his arm and onto the floor. For a second he thought about a hospital, then had a moment of clarity and remembered they had medics on their team. He didn't see Theodorus around, but Rachel was across the room with Carter. Wes pulled himself up and walked over to them and started to talk, but had to remind himself to unclench his jaw, "Rachel, could you help me out?" He pulled his bloody hand away and let her look at the injuries.

Rorschach sat up, adjusted his mask, then stood. Almost immediately, his leg gave way in a flood of pain, and he realized he must have taken a hit to the leg. The pain came from his lower leg, so it couldn't have been too serious, but it hurt like hell!

He limped into the bar, sat heavily in a chair and beat back the pain. His mind worked furiously to overcome the burning as he waited for Rachel to finish with the others.

Rachel smirked.

"well, another shirt's coming off."

As she helped Wes get his shirt off and started work on retracting bullets out of the wounds (i assume the bullets stay in after the stim), she told her story.

"I'm just a thrill seeker. got bored with the old regime and decided to get some fresh air. I new my parents wouldn't agree so i sold my small apartment and got new I.D. and the stuff and then came here. Perhaps it was the wrong decision but i can't go back now. Ok Wes, you've got to be brave. this is going to hurt like hell, even with painkillers."

Rachel used a pair of tweezers to extract the bullets.

"Argh, fuck." Wes let out a quick breath. He was gripping the top of a wooden chair with his good hand, causing four crescent-shaped dents to form under his fingernails. When Rachel finished pulling the bullets he was breathing hard. Then she started to wrap gauze around his arm. "Agh. . .I've never. . .been shot before. . .shit. . .I guess I'd better get used to it."

"Yeah you better. Getting shot is a regular occurrence in DC. Just try not to get shot in the head."

Carter laughed and hit Wes in the back. He then took a seat at the bar. More people walked into the bar. They were just ordinary people. Carter turned back to Wes.

"So Wes, why did you join DC?"

Ben looked at his teammates. Apparently he wasn't watching close enough to notice all of his teammates getting hurt. Rachel was going to have her hands full.

Spoiler: Next match

Next match will begin later tonight, we'll act as if a few hours have gone by. This one will be objective based. So I'll see you guys on here tonight.

Wes grimaced when Carter hit him on the back. He wasn't quite ready to laugh at getting shot, but answered Carter anyway. "I didn't want to take a normal job. I went to university to learn about electronics, but how exciting can electronics get." He tossed Carter his custom goggles for effect,"So I looked into the DC. It was lucky I learned mechanics and driving, or I would have nothing much to contribute here. When we get a vehicle challenge, nobody is getting behind the wheel but me."

Ben's PDA beeped at him. Must be new match details....It certainly was. Apparently this next match was going to be objective based. This intrigued Ben so he clicked for further details on the match. Apparently it was going to be survival. Waves upon waves of people would come at them, and the longer they lasted. The more money they would gain.

Ben spoke to his teammates, who were all seated at the bar. "Ok, people. This is going to be objective based. They expect us to die, so the death censors will be turned off. If we die in the simulation we'll just be ejected from the game." Ben let this sink in. "We're playing tonight, so I expect everyone to get a little TLC, and I'll see everyone here."

I'll launch the map tonight or tommorow early so everyone be expecting a match.

The match was growing nearer, Ben decided it must be time to head to the uploader room. "Alright guys, it's time for our survival match, everyone get yourselves to a chair, and we'll all get uploaded."

Ben walked back into the uploader room, sat down, plugged in his PDA, and closed his eyes. It was little after the warm liquid surrounded his consciousness that he woke up in the Coliseum. He was ready to fight.

I'll start the match when a few more people get in. Everyone has to die for this simulation to end, so be creative.

"Hey, Rachel," said Rorschach, seeing her finish with Wes, "Can you give my shin a look? I think someone managed to give me a knife wound, and it would be ice to be able to walk when we have our next fight."

"oh shit. This looks bad. A big knife slash. You aren't going to be able to run for the next match..."

Rachel heard Ben tell everyone Stim was about to start.

"...and that would be now. come on. I'm going to give this my best shot but it's going to have to be quick."

Rachel started working like mad to get the leg fixed up.

Carter smiled. This was his favorite type of match. He quickly went over to the chair and sat down.

"Alright. Lets do this."

He plugged in his PDA to the chair. The sedative quickly took effect and the warm liquid wrapped around his brain and he fell asleep. He woke and found himself in the coliseum. He swung his sword over his shoulder and his katana was still on his waist. He was ready to fight.

More people killed. More money.

Rachel was doing her best, but Rorschach knew that he'd be at a disadvantage in this match

"That's enough," he said calmly, "Just put on a brace so I can stand on it, and give me a painkiller, and I'll be fine"

Rachel hesitated but knew that it was probably the best choice. She gave Rorschach the things he wanted and helped him get into the stim room. then she put the needle in and let the Tranqs flood her mind.

on the other side, she checked her armour and got ready for the waves of enemies.

Rorschach sat, but before entering the Sim, he changed the settings on his PDA. When he appeared in the Sim, he had with him a iron bar, about 4 feet long. The pockets of his coat bulged with mysterious objects.

"Right, here's my plan. I'm going to try to keep up, but if I fall behind, I will stand my ground and take a few with me. I'd recommend that I do it alone, because heroics don't score any points"

"no, in this sort of thing, we need to cover each others backs. its all about teamwork and keeping each other alive for long enough that we can earn as much money as possible. I don't think that they have any explosives so i think we should bunker down in a circle sort of position. this way, we can all see our enemies and won't be surprised from behind."

"Okay, but all I'm saying I'm saying, with my leg like this, I'm gonna be a huge risk. Just realize I won't last for ever, and don't do anything rash to try and save me when I go"
