Lately I've been having issues with choosing an avatar. It's hard to find the one that screams "Me," and I'm pretty sure my current one is rather disturbing to some. I need some advice.

I'm sure there's not much anyone can do besides saying "Just wait or search, and you'll find the one you're happy with." Ya know, basic stuff that's pretty much about right. But maybe some stories of how you came across the avatars you've kept for months or even years might help me in finding the one I want to keep for lengths of time like that.

I'd appreciate anything you guys can give~

Edit: I found it, guys! Thanks for your help! And listening to how you found your avatars has been fun~ Feel free to post still if you wanna share~

Ha. "Keeping an avatar for months or years." Actually, I do sometimes keep them for months, but usually it's only a few weeks before I come across a new picture I want or decide I want the face you associate with me to be a different person.

Sorry, I have no stories. I just randomly get tired of it or find a new one. :p

In the past I've chosen an avatar based on a joke between myself and another user, something I'm really into at the time, and because it's in gif form.

The easiest would be what you're into right now. Anything right now got your attention? A meme, tv series, movie, etc.? Just google that and see what pops up. And if you find yourself needing some help making an avatar, the folks down at the Avatar Store are ready to help.

Good advice, I haven't thought of that! I've considered the Avatar Store too, but I'm sure they've got enough on their plate as is. I'll use them as a last resort~

Well we're on a video game site. Why not just throw up an avatar of a video game character you really like? Seems appropriate enough.

You'd be surprised. Besides for March Madness, they really don't get that many request. I just checked and they're only working on one avatar. I've talked with one of the more prominent members there and he has assured me time and time again that request don't bother them at all. They exist for a reason.

I'm sorry, I...I shouldn't have shouted. That's not how things should be done. The picture must tell a story.

OT: If you tell the people in the Avatar Store about your relevant interests, they can probably slap something pretty neat-o together for you. I'd mix that with Elfgore's suggestion above.

You're gonna have to explain that to me, because I have absolutely no idea what any of that was about. What is illogical about having an avatar of a game character on a video game site?

Daystar chose mine since I was looking for a new avatar and there was a thing in the Brovengers user group about Borderlands 2. The siren brofist gif was posted a lot in there, and really for no reason most of the time. He just suggested that I use it since we were all pumped for it.

So there you go.

[sub][sub]Even though I need to change it to a non-MM version, but whatever. >.>[/sub][/sub]

As for you, maybe something that you love...? Usually works for me, and as already mentioned you can have the people over at the Avatar Store help you out. That's who I normally go to to make a MM version of my avatar. :D

Nothing at all. I'd feel the same way about other media, I just would have put a mix of different things into it, since somebody's favourite game can change as often as their favourite book or film. Uh...you should probably ignore the one I have at the moment, though. That's not really a good example of what I mean. :/

Anywho, it's just down to personal preference. I don't mean to give you ball-ache over it or anything.

I didn't put much thought into my avatar[footnote]If I remember correctly, I orginally looked for a Hark! A Vagrant picture of Jules Verne, but couldn't get one the right size[/footnote]; I like Basic Instructions (which is how I thought of it in the first place) it's simple, easy to find my posts with the high-contrast image (not really necessary on this site, but Thunderous Cacophony is a unified 'personality' on multiple sites), and it's not some awful .gif full of rainbow vomit.

Honestly, keeping an avatar for a long time is not that big a deal to me;I just didn't want to bother changing it repeatedly. If you want one that lasts for years, I recommend something simple and visually appealing; jokes and references get old, but something that's pretty enough you don't mind seeing it out of the corner of your eye forever sounds like what you want. There's a reason so many desktop backgrounds are landscapes.

I'm not sure I understand your point; what's wrong with having an image of a game you like, even it it isn't your absolute favourite game of the moment? I mean, Daystar famously has an Okami image, and I wouldn't mind if he revealed he's had more fun playing Watch_Dogs recently. Maybe the story that a user wants to tell is "I like video games, especially X".

I dunno, my avatar was easy to choose because it fits my name.

For about a year and a half here I swapped avatars a lot to characters I liked in various stories, but the cell phone beats all.

I've been using [mtg_card=Wyluli Wolf] as an avatar since I started posting on the MtG board in early 2000's. Of course, for some time after I won the use of a custom avatar, I used a picture of Ein for a while, but since someone else had that avatar on the Escapist, I've been using the Wolf ever since.

I've been using this one for quite a few months (Atleast 4) on everything from Steam to cell phone backround. I just happened upon it and have a general interest in symbolism, so a cute alchemical baphomet was a perfect fit.

Pretty much just get lucky. Browsing art sites as a hobby makes it easier.

Mine, when it isn't the usual chibi Terra gif, is mainly dependant on which anime I'm watching atm. Helps to have a basic knowledge of how to create gifs with Instagiffer, of course. I'd just scroll through some youtube funnies until I hit one I like.

Greetings from your local Avatar Store smith! We don't really get that many requests over in the store, so don't feel bad about coming to us for help. We'd be more than happy to help, that's why we exist!

Well, I don't find it disturbing at all... More ironic the more I look at it...

OT: I don't know... Find something you like and hope there's a picture of it...

Or ask the Avatar Store for assistance on creating an avatar to your liking...

That's all I can think of, in terms of avatar choosing... For me, personally, besides to one you see now, I have 4 others on standby just because I tend to use different avatars for different things...

Well, I took your advice and chose something I liked. It's a Persona 4 and Gurren Lagann cross-over image of Izanagi-No-Okami (Which is what I named my computer build after). Lemme know what you guys think! And thanks a lot for the advice ^w^ If I decide to change it later, so be it, but I am rather liking this one~

First I went with a picture I thought no one else would use. After about a month I came across someone who most likely stole it from me. Forced him to change it(because I'm nice like that) and later on decided to go for a completely unique picture; one of me with some very slight alteration. Stuck with it ever since. It's horribly outdated these days(24 irl, 17 on the picture), but I don't dare changing it. Most people recognise others by the avatars and I want to keep the little recognition I got.

Pick one and change it when you don't like it any more. Personally I just made one arbitrarily and haven't been bothered making anything better.
