In terms of recent gaming would highly recommend Mass Effect 2 - it has a massive scale (or at least feels like it does) and is paced alot faster than any morrowind game due to it's action packed nature. I found all the different alien races and stuff like that fascinating.

But yeh, I found Oblivion incredibly engrossing if you don't mind that sort of thing. It's really the best there is without playing World of Warcraft - I don't play WoW but I've seen the effect it has on people.

As far as your lore and books are concerned, WoW has the largest Wiki site out of all the articles posted on Wikipedia. I shit you not. This is in a addition to all the information you can draw from playing the earlier games.

O, btw Oblivion has this fast travel system that means you don't have to walk everywhere (like it's annoying predecessor).

You N'WAH!

I played about 500 hours of both Morrowind and Oblivion. fast-travel seemed like a great idea at first, but I can honestly say that I feel it was detrimental to the immersion. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.

In fact, as amazing as Oblivion was, Morrowind was the superior RPG in almost every way. They didn't even bother trying with the lore, they recycled all the same books with a few additions. Oblivion was just visually beautiful, and it did (imo) have better combat.

To the OP, I recommend Morrowind before Oblivion, for the reason that I think you'd enjoy it more. Morrowind has definable culture, hundreds of hours worth of roaming and exploring, a huge map (a map which retains its sense of vastness, due to having to walk or purchase travel)

Also, it's only like $20 brand new lol.

I would avoid going the MMO route, for the simple reason that MMO's have a tendency to obscure lore with grinding. LOTRO may focus on lore, but something tells me Aragorn didn't have to go kill 20 spiders in the forest for farmer Joe on his way to becoming king of men.

Neverwinter Nights & all of its expansions & premium mods, then Neverwinter Nights 2 & it's first expansion. Very story-driven.

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. Probably two of the greatest Western RPGs ever made.

Also, System Shock 1 and 2.

And if you do try Neverwinter Nights 2, you need to download a module called The Harp and the Chrysanthemum.

How has nobody mentioned Planescape: Torment? Still widely regarded as one of the best written videogame stories of all time. All the original 2 Fallout titles. Fallout 3's story is weaker, but it's gameplay makes up for the weakness in being a goddam blast. Moreso if you mod the game for difficulty and use Mart's Mutant Mod to make enemies less copy-paste.

Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl i found pretty intriguing as well.
Mainly the plot which makes you wonder just what happened to the amnesiac protagonist for once.
Oh and the fact your in a strange world full of mutants and different factions of heavily accents Russians trying to constantly kill each other.
The plot seems to solve itself too quickly, but your in a world where weird, crazy, scary cool stuff happens.
Unfortunately you dont get much information from NPCs on just what the hell is going on.
But that makes it sort of feel like everyone is accustomed to the everyday life of trying to not get eaten or shot for another day, which kind of makes the world more intriguing.

The problems it had, mainly lack of side missions, the bugs and crashes and the fact you get the best weapons and armour within 2 hours are fixed with the most recent Stalker game, Stalker Call of Pripyat.
Two notes:
1) As great as STALKER games are, they are notorious for offensively bad end areas. In particular the final area of SoC is brutally hard and cheap, and goes from creepy to infuriating within a minute. The starting creepy is nice, but it just never shuts up, and gets annoying.
2) If you do play STALKER: SoC, make sure to download STALKER Complete 2009, it fixes every single bug/issue (like stealth being useless), updates the graphics to modern day standards, and marginally tones down the brutality of the final areas. (1 less chopper spamming missles at you) Complete actually makes the first game run better than Pripyat does.

Mmm I have completed Mass Effect 2 multiple times and really enjoyed it again and again.

Question for WoW people --> I rushed through to lvl 80 for the sake of it but have only recently been exposed to all this lore business so I feel its too late :/ Do you recommend starting from scratch and getting involved with it? Is it worth it?

Mmm only really started to interest me in WOTLK with the whole background story to arthas, frostmourne and mal ganis which really caught me. Is much of the game like this? Didn't really pay attention before >.>

Knights of the Old Republic! That's a brilliant game, if a bit dated now. The 2nd is also good but can't get near the first for story and fun, in my opinion. But they both tie together very nicely.
And of course, Morrowind.

Please tell me I'm not the only person who really really digs the Lore of the Guild Wars universe?
I have about 1000 hours clocked on Guild Wars, and yes I do like the lore. However, I have spent quite a few hours on the official wiki reading it. As other people have said, the lore isn't woven into the game as tightly as it could be. On a side note, looking forward to GW2?

To the OP, there have been a lot of great suggestions so far, but since you are leaning towards an MMO I'd give WoW a shot. Aside from the actual MMO, there are the other Warcraft games which lend WoW their setting and story.

There were three Warcraft games before World of Warcraft as well as over a dozen full length novels and comics on store shelves which take place in the setting. Not to forget there's also a blockbuster Warcraft movie in the works being directed by none other than Sam Raimi.

So yeah, there's a ton of story behind the series if you take the time to follow it, although it can get more than a little confusing at times since it seems even Blizzard has trouble keeping up with all the various sub-plot they keep introducing into the series. It's not exactly high-brow reading material either, but it can be entertaining to follow in a cheesy sort of way.

Also makes WOW a bit more fun to play too when you actually know the story behind the characters, location, and even the boss you fight as well. I'm looking forward to renewing my sub when Cataclysm comes out and seeing what chaos the Old Gods have begun to wrought across Azeroth!

It may be derivative and cheesy, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy keeping up with Warcrafts story. Bit of a guilty pleasure!

I just downloaded warcraft 3 reign of chaos and the frozen throne part as well, trying to piece together what exactly is going on (illidan raising the naga etc..) might have to check the warcraft wiki on some of the details.

Morrowind has pretty much won me over, been checking out several of the videos etc and it looks great :D, and whats this about an editor? create your own weapons, dungeons? :O
