I just responded to another thread, and it brought up an interesting question for me: how does everyone here define friendship? I define it as a solemn (if unspoken) oath to always be there for someone, without question. A friend is someone for whom I'd walk through fire, and who'd do the same for me. Obviously, not a very inclusive definition. So, how does everyone else do it, is a "friend" anyone who hangs out with you, and you enjoy spending time with? Are there levels of friendliness?

Mine's a bit more open but still closer to ex than inclusive. "Someone who goes out of their way to be with you". A friend will do things with you if they can and only major obstructions will stop them. Everyone else I deem an acquaintance, if still a friendly one. Of course my definition isn't bullet-proof and falls apart once applied to the net but it works as a rule of thumb.

My definition of friend is almost completely arbitrary. If I consider someone a friend and vice-versa, then that person is my friend.

My friends are people who are important to me. That's all.

And I bum money off them sometimes.

I think I owe Zeb $500...

Apologies for an inadequate definition.

You could have just asked this in my thread and save forum space. Meh whatever.

Well i define a friend as someone who will care if something bad happens to me. the same can be said that they I will care if something bad happens to them. A good friend however will try and stop that bad thing happening to you.

Yep. I'm not really the type to help others...

Ahh, I'd take a bullet for you too (cough).

My friends? I would describe them as a bunch of ugly sons of b- ah, they're cool. And you guys are cool too, even though I will never meet you... hopefully.

My friends are simply the people who will have my back when shit hits the fan, and whose back I'll guard when/if the time comes. I'm not a very social person, which is why I have this definition instead of one like: "Does stuff with me often."

Oo, that's a hard one, actually.

I dunno. In some cases, I'm fiercely loyal, and there's some people I'll always forgive, and would traipse through the depths of hell for, then there's other mates I wouldn't actually be that affected if they died...

I guess I'm just pretty polarised like that.

Overall, I'd say friendship is just someone I get along well with, but it doesn't mean that much. If a friend then does enough good for me, it goes beyond a friendship and I'm at the loyal stage.

i define a friend as someone i do stuff with, either real or virtual. everyone else are acquaintances, much like co-workers and ppl i run into on the forums or what ever game i'm playing.

and as for helping, if i can i will always help ppl out. i don't expect much in return but if i ask for help and the person says no without a good reason, ie busy doing something else, i usually won't help them out again.

funny thing is i've spooked more than one person by the fact i'm nice and helpful when i'm not otherwise occupied, even with so called "nice" ppl.

I believe a friend to be someone who takes the time to get to know me and i'm comfortable opening myself up to. As well as opening up to me and letting me get to know the person a bit better. There are degree's of friendliness, which is all determined by how comfortable you are opening up to each other.
So i guess they have to meet a certain criteria.
1)spend time with each other
2)willingness to learn more about one another
3)share a common interest
4)enjoy spending time with one another

I feel like this crosses with a girlfriend/boyfriend from time to time but i guess the key word is "friend"

I think a friend is someone that loves you no matter what. They are always by your side for the good and the bad moments we all go through. They will always stand up for you, even if they know your wrong. They willing love you even though they know you aren't perfect, love you all the more for it and would never change it. A friendship is a lot like a relationship between a committed couple. Just theres no strings attached. Dedication, trust and respect for one another. The ability to agree to disagree at times. I would give my life up for any one of my friends and just the same kill for them if they where in harms way. I would do all this expecting nothing in return. It doesn't matter if they would or wouldn't die for me. I still love them all the same. That's what part of friendship is. You shouldn't expect anything in return. You should feel privileged for them to return the feelings, not demand it. I can probably count all my friends on one hand. Though I do have many acquaintance. I'm a fierce and loyal friend. I live like I love. It shouldn't ever be, 'Be proud to be my friend' it bothers me when people act like that. It's forever and always, 'I'm above all else honored to be yours.' Thats just how I see it though.

friend for me is someone i have had enough conversations with to know they can are cool, not douche bags and if they walked up to me in a hallway and started talking i wouldnt give them a weird look and walk away.

and for who ever said a friend is someone i would walk through fire for either your the kind of person who will do anything for a dollar or you REALLY like your friends. i dont think i would jump through fire for more then 1-2 people, immediate family excluded. and this wall of fire you speak of, how thick are the flames?
