I can find unrealistic games annoying sometimes. At least when the non-realistic elements keep me from being immersed into the game. I have much lower expectations from games that don't market themselves as "realistic" games though...

Realistic games do not bother me. I am usually not too concerned with that aspect of the game because I am too concerned with other things in the game.

I was talking to my friend about why he didn't like Left 4 Dead. He said it was because you are mindlessly killing zombies. I said that mindlessly killing zombies is no different from mindlessly killing aliens in Halo or mindlessly killing people in Call of Duty. And then he complained how it wasn't realistic that the pistols have infinite ammo, while in Modern Warfare 2 you can shoot two shotguns at the same time without your arms breaking off. Because we all know how realistic Modern Warfare 2 is.

I don't care about realism, especially in a zombie game.
Exactly. It is a zombie game. A ZOMBIE game. If you get mad at the lack of realism and completely accept the zombies, there is something wrong.

I like how in Bioshock there are plenty of handy vending machines that sell bees and fire for public use.

My favourite is always the Racing Sims and how people bang on about how "realistic" Forza or GT is.

If they were real whenever you crash you'd get a minigame where you have to lie about your insurance details while trying to hide your numberplate.

Realism took all the fun out of gaming and ruined it. I blame Tom Clancy and his Rainbow Shit games.

Grrr... it's so annoying that when I load my gun with two rounds, it counts for ten. Also, I'm annoyed that a game that is SOOO REALISTIC has this problem at all! I mean yesterday I had to dodge three infected Aurora bosses and a horde of Tvirus zombies on the way home from work!

I don't complain about it at all, but I do find it funny that whenever you reload, every clip has exactly the same number of rounds in it even when you pick up enemy clips that have presumably been used...
Yeah I don't complain either unless it actually gave me something to complain about. Although I do hate it that for shotguns in some games, you have to wait until you fully loaded before you can shoot.

Apparently being a scientist doesn't automatically equal "not an idiot".
I'm actually going to defend this scientist with one simple argument. Did you even read the article?

If you had, you might have noticed that he isn't trying to make it so that Hollywood produces nothing in film but cold, irrefutable fact and make the world into a really boring place. He has no qualms with elements of fantasy, but if the film starts going on an LSD trip, then we have problems, the main one being that vast amounts of audiences will believe what they've seen is possible. It's basically spreading misinformation, and Hollywood arguably has a tertiary obligation (after making money and entertaining folk) to educate its audiences with the material it displays.

That's why the scientists are annoyed. It doesn't make them idiots.

Whenever I pick out things that defy realism in whatever I'm doing I usually think of ways to justify them, or ignore them if I can't, its more fun that way.

RAWR I HATES PEPOLES WHO COMPLAINS ABOUT REALISM!!!11!!

now,on a serious note : realism=boring

i shall take an exemple : in skate 2 pepole complain about falling having no effect on the game well how about this:

You try to do a kickflip, fall, your wrist is broken, youspend six months in hospital making your skaters muscle tone go down. When you get out your wrist doesn't work as well as before causing an other accident when attempting an invert and so on until your skater is a usless piece of sh*t and you can't play the game any more.

so: 1)Realism is slow, boring and hard
2)I don't have a second point =D

Every time you bring real life physics into a discussion about a game, God kills a kitten.
Please think of the kittens.
It was inevitable and you know it...

But I usually go for movie realism in games, you should be able to shrug of some bullets. And eating can I do IRL. In games i wanna do stuff I cant do in reallity.

Complaining about realism in games is like complaining black should be white.

In resident evil there are zombies, or in RE5 (im not sure of the other games) creatures called 'Majini' which alone is unreal in itself (though according to certain sources there is a real life zombie virus not so much liekt he theatrical ones we all know and love but this isn't that subject).

Anyway to add tot he HUGE lack in realism RE5 already has,

(SPOILER ALERT)

the main villain can move so fast that he disappears and warps around like he's from an early Dragonball Z episode, he is able to throw people like you would toss a throw pillow and not to forget; at the end of the game he takes a bath in liquid magma and STILL survives it.

Complain about the lack of realism in that all you want to but it was never meant to be real.

If you want realism, play a wargame without using cheats or glitches, that's about as close as you're getting. better yet, go dot he real thing and serve your country, don't look for perfect realism in games or you're going to get disappointed, or, in my case, very very bored. I much prefer being able to throw fireballs from my hands, or slice up demons from the underworld because its more fun than realism. That or pilot a giant mecha and blast my enemies to itty bitty pieces with dozens and dozens of missiles, or a grenade launcher big enough to fire a train like a javelin if it so pleased.

Okay I think that's my rant over, xD

Basically, your friend's just being too damn picky in my opinion. it sucks to spoil a game just because you find some flaw that you find unreal. Its fun to spot things like this but does it really matter..? Not to me at least. But to each his own, I suppose.

I only complain when a game has prioritized realism over fun.
I suppose when i buy a game like GT though i should be expecting a driving simulator and not a game.

Sorry, the article itself wasn't too clear. The scientist's list and viewpoints are not included or commented on in the article - it is speculation on information received about said list.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/feb/21/hollywood-films-obey-laws-science

This is a more comprehensive story on the matter.

As for the idiot part, his viewpoint boils down to: "You can have things move faster than the speed of light if you want. But after that I would like things developed in a coherent way."

It's just such an incomprehensible misinterpretation of what films, games, fuck it; FICTION is meant to be that to enforce or guide it in such a way as to enforce a reality upon it would just be jailing it.

So the other day i was playin Resident Evil 5, and my friend kept complaining about how its annoying that when you reload the shotgun he only puts 2 shells in yet theres 10 shells loaded.

I was curious if any of you guys on the escapist have stories to share of the times where people whined "its annoying that its not so real" or something along those lines.
Tell him hes perfectly entitled to put the controller down for 5 seconds to allow his own time for these extra shells while the zombies claw his face for a "more entertaining" experience. Ask him if he wants a punch in the face when ever he gets hit for the "realistic" experience of pain.

Well, take goldeneye for example, where you can dual wield two sniper rifles. That doesn't make much sense.
Im buying this game as soon as possible.

When you reload a clip that still has bullets in it and they don't get wasted, somehow. It'd be quite time consuming to do that in real life.
Tried this in real life with a bastard child of the SA80 I learned to fire, jesus christ you would need a lot of time on your hands or insane dextrous fingers to do this, remembering the numbers along would be almost impossible while under fire or zombies. Then again being very OCD i would never reload unless i would have to, ruining the game for me.

The only time I ever complained about lack of realism was in Halo when I got punched in the foot and died. Yes, I know, realism and Halo shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence, but I thought I would share.

I think there is a TV trope for this. Yep, here it is:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AcceptableBreaksFromReality

If games were too realistic they wouldn't be fun, and fun is the point of games. It is a game not a reality simulator.

I usually only complain if it's 100% dumb, for sake of example you drown after just 2 seconds under water. Other then that, I hate the entire it's not real argument for games. You wouldn't go to a Star wars movie and complain about it being too unrealistic without looking like a dick, so why can you do that with games. Its meant to be a form of escapism :/
You say that about star wars, but when i went to see Episode III with my cuzin, i asked him what he thought and his reply was 'it was ok but that bit at the end was so unrealistic' i was stunned
