Deleting Data Earns A Punch

My younger brother deleted my game data for GTA5. Naturally, I was pissed. But he said sorry and kept saying due to the fact that I was on the last mission and had lost everything. In the end, he just got the worse wedgey that he's ever felt. But then I learn from another younger brother that he went home and was laughing it up. He thought it was the best thing he ever did. So when I saw him again, I popped him. The question is: Was it wrong to do such a thing? And what would you have done if it was your game data that got erased?

Edit: He's 13 and I'm 26. He wasn't injured. The punch was to his right shoulder.

I hope this is a joke post. I know what I'd like to tell you but I don't think the Escapist will let me.

You are old enough to know better, and to be honest I think you know what people will think of you if you go about punching kids for trivial crap like this.

Yes! you are in the wrong. I'm worried if you cant see that.
If my GTA data was erased by my brother I wouldn't care, if it was a game I did care about I'd probably make him buy me lunch or something by way of an apology.

I think your next step forward is to get a grip on your life and move out of your parents house. Apologies if you actually own a home and have a job, but your actions are still pretty pathetic.

I agree. OP, you're an adult, what you just did is most likely counts as child abuse or at-least assault in your jurisdiction, especially as I assume you aren't your brother's legal guardian. You do not hit children, no matter what they do, if you must punish your brother speak with your parents or confiscate something that belongs to him. I've had my own younger sister and a kid I worked with delete saves before, so I know how annoying it is, in those cases I let them off since they were much younger than your brother and had no idea what they were doing.

If you're 26 and you can't think of any better course of action than to punch your 13-year-old brother over a deleted save file, you need to sit down and think at more length about it.

You said he wasn't injured and it was in his shoulder as opposed to in the face, but you did say you punched him...I guess a lot of people are going to have pretty varying ideas of what kind of force a punch has behind it.

well....as infuriating as a game being erased is....heres maybe a bit of backstory?

My little bro and I are 7 years apart. I had DQ3 on my gameboy color back then, I mustve been 16, so logically, he was 9.
Now anyways whos ever played a DQ game, knows they are much like final fantasy..where it takes a hell of a long time to get to the end point in the game. He grabbed my gameboy..and clicked new game and saved(that..... -.-). Instead of physical interraction between us it was always more of a 'dude !?!? WTF!?!?' interraction, so..more of a verbal sence.

Now here comes the part then where many others would judge but the point at the end of the day is...how hard did you knock him? Was it a brotherly 'punch'? or was it more of a..knock him into the hospital punch haha.

If its the latter, aye, no fun and games there..yet growing up with a smaller brother, we used to go at eachother with punches that 'seemed' quite hard to the outer eye, yet for us it was just fun and games in a way. So its quite difficult to put up a jurisdiction in that sence then.

Long story short, if your bro's are fine with it, and you always rough house a bit...I really..dont see a prob with it.

You checked him. A charlie horse in the shoulder is fine, and is often the way to be serious but not serious at the same time. Now if he didn't laugh about like he did, then you went too far, but purposely doing that warrants discipline. Same as a puppy, little humans respond the same way to you showing them what they did was wrong. Of course, depending on the personality, that could backfire horribly.

So I suppose a shot in the shoulder works since he was family, but next time I would be very stern, and use parental controls/router passwords to block him from playing his games for as long as it takes you to get back to where you were.

I do have siblings, I'm 27 with my youngest sibling being 16. I used to hit my younger brothers and sisters regularly when I was a child, rarely when I was a teenager, and never as an adult. If you do not grow out of "You made me mad so I'm going to hit you!" stage by your early 20's at the latest then yes I will say something is wrong with you.

I can't imagine what will cause me, a 27 year old man, to want to hit my 16 year old sibling but erasing a game file is definitely not it.

In my opinion, violence isn't really a good thing. Not something that is good to use. But jesus, you are brothers. People sitting here flaunting their superior knowledge about child abuse and assault, it is not like he punched him to the ground and kicked him repeatedly. It is just a brother punching a brother, the age difference is big but what does that matter. It's family matters.

I wouldn't have punched him. I would have probably shouted the ever living shit out of him, not letting him use any of my fancy consoles or games for a while.

Also, he is thirteen, I personally believe that is out of "He's just a kid" age. So punishment in one way or the other is definantly justified.

P.S. revenge just leads to more shit being thrown at the fan of relationships.

If he did it to be an asshole, he NEEDS a punch to his arm, or he will do it again later. He may be the younger, smaller person, but that doesn't give him the right to walk all over you and make you his *****. If he doesn't learn that now, then he will try it with other people in the future. Better you punching him in the arm now instead of someone else in his face later.

Now, if it was an accident, that's another matter. I've had younger siblings erase things, mostly because they don't know how to read and thought they were selecting the save slot to load it, not delete it. Controlled verbal anger is more than enough for that, because they didn't do it on purpose, and hopefully they will learn to make sure they are paying attention next time when the screen turns red for delete mode.

Did you people even have brothers? Brothers always roughhouse a bit, I think you're seeing a more sinister side to this that simply isn't there.

I got a few punches (or the dreaded noogie, if I remember correctly) for breaking my older brother's Warhammer a couple of times, which I reckon was pretty deserved, although I don't think I ever deleted a save file. Maybe I might have bought a crap car in Gran Turismo, but I never deleted a file. I pinned my younger brother down when he deleted one of my oblivion files (thankfully it wasn't a high level character)- it wasn't especially brutal as I was in terrible shape when I was younger and he was much more athletic and only two years younger than me. I think if I put that kind of effort into it today I would put him in hospital, but we both know how hard an acceptable punch is.

I do not think anyone is against siblings physically hurting each other. It absolutely normal for brothers to roughhouse and be occasionally aggressive. But in this case the OP is 26 while the sibling is 13. If you honestly don't see what's wrong that an adult hitting a child because he was angry then I'm not sure what to say.

If what you thought you did was appropriate then thats that if it was me I probably would have given him a hard smack across the face just enough to take him off his feet and make them cry rather than punch them as for whether thats right or not is up for debate im sure many laws would say its wrong but then are laws always right?

Just to make you feel better my 7 year old PS3 died earlier in the week looks like I have lost 7 years worth of saves woooo! and since I cant remember my password and my email address that I used for the setting up of the account is defunct I may not be able to get my account and all the downloaded games and DLC I have had back either. Although strangely I am not that pissed if this had happened when I was a few years younger I would be seething.

I am one of 10 children from the same two parents. I also practice Pediatric medicine as my profession. If his younger brother so much as mentions this to his physician, nurse or any other medical professional that his 26 year old brother punched him in the shoulder, they are required by law in the US to report it. If a school counselor, teacher, principal overhears his brother or his friends discussing his brother punching him, they are required to report it. In a case where the adult brother assaults a minor, the parents can also be charged if they did not report it and allowed it to happen. This is not only assault and battery this is also considered child abuse and would be endangerment and neglect if the parents allowed it to happen as well. Not only is it " not okay" to hit your brother, it is also illegal and since his brother is a minor, he doesn't press the charges, the state does. The state can press charges against his brother and his parents for allowing it to happen. This is grounds for both a police investigation and a child protective services investigation. It is never okay to go around punching people, especially children. The idea that it is somehow okay to punch someone, even in the shoulder, is false.
