What are you actually getting done at the dentist?

I was at my dentist just recently getting another filling put in so had get an injection at first. The actyual injection didn't really bother me that much, though it did feel quiet strange but it didn't really hurt so to speak.

Having to get 6 injections could be part of the problem. Perhaps you're thinking about the needles too much. Try thinking about something to take your mind off it, like your favourite Subway sandwich or something like that. :) Since you're not actually feeling the pain, it sounds like it's more in your mind that anything else.

I woke up in the middle of getting all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed. It was pretty horrifying... the doctors were talking about going golfing on the weekend, and I could feel and HEAR the teeth being ripped out of my mouth...

Other than that, I've never really had a bad time with the dentist.

I haven't really had to visit the dentist much. I'm the only son of three to not get cavities. Hooray for brushin mah teeth!

But that seems to have been a fairly bad experience. I hate needles in all forms, so I shivered whilst reading your post... just try to focus on something else, I suppose.

I HATE injections at the dentists. I had my first one when I was like, 9 or 10 years old, because I had an abcess in my gum. They removed the tooth, but had to inject right next to the abcess itself.

It was the worst pain I have ever, ever felt. It didn't even numb the gum when they pulled the tooth, either. I've had four since then, again for pulling teeth, and I hate it.

Now, I refuse to have injections. If I'm having a filling, I'll prefer to go through with the discomfort of that rather than the pain of injection. As to how to deal with it... it depends what you're having done. If you're having root canal or teeth pulled, maybe the injection is worth it.

Personally, I'd forgoe treatment entirely if it meant more stabbing in the mouth. That first experience was so bad for me that I haven't even had my regular jabs (tetanus, polio, diptheria (actually, i think one of those is on a sugar cube, but i don't know which) TB...).

We all had (and still have) to go through it now and then.
I had all my wisdom teeth taken out (after being broken apart of course, otherwise it would've been too easy) and a few other things. It wasn't enjoyable but I just love the feeling when the agony subsides...
Just learn to shut out the pain.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer!
Hot dental assistants help focusing on other stuff, too.

The sugar cube is for the Polio vaccination. If I recall correctly, the lack of an injection is balanced out "nicely" by the horrible taste. Bleh...

That too. Always good to have something nice to look at while the dentist is digging around inside your mouth...:p Then, provided your mouth hasn't gone totally numb, you can chat up the receptionist on the way out. Haha!

Dude, you really need to get at least the most basic ones, like tetanus, polio, measles and, depending on where you live, tick-borne encephalitis or hepatitis A and B.
Really, this decrease in inoculations is dangerous, it allows diseases like polio and measles to resurface and permanently harm our children.
And stuff like tetanus and hepatitis A and B is for your own protection.

I've never had problems with the dentist. Even when I had my 3rd front tooth removed (that's right everybody, I'm a freak of nature!) I did not show fear.

I like my dentist. She's careful, asks every 5 minutes if I need to take a break. And I don't even ask for shots or anything.

Out of the last 5 or 6 visits, only one was painful because my front tooth got chipped off and it hurt like hell, especially when the wind blew into my mouth. And I couldn't even savor the pizza I was having the day before...

I used to actually like going to my dentists. She was damn hot and whenever she was doing any drilling or poking around in there her bosoms used to rest softly on the top of my head. Good times.

She wasn't a bad dentist either.

Well I am getting fillings, and its not pain i feel, its just well, you know when your arm is numb and you rub it and it feels like a cold rubbery feeling, yeah i feel that inside my gums and its REALLY disturbing, not painful, painful is when that screetch of the drill happens often and a sharp pain is felt in the teeth (i used to get fillings without needles now its like the dentist wont let me i dont mind pain AT ALL) but the needles are distrubing to sit through >.> im gunna maybe lie and say im numb after one needle...

OH and to all of you with hot dentists, i have one too lmao, shes my friends mom I'M NOT KIDDING ITS LIKE SCARY... but that doesnt help too much

Sometimes its not the work, more the dentist doing the work.
I changed to a better dentist and she explain how and why we have to do things and suddenly its not that bad.
I also had to take out 4 wisdom teeths, and gas were not an option, so some surgery, drilling and crunching noises with that "lovely" smell of burned bone later i had LOT less problems with my teeths, just the yearly checkups and usually no problems for the past 10 years.

I know she is married, but what is up with all those hot dental assistants...
Perhaps they weed out the ugly ones at dentistschool, or perhaps my dentist is bi-curious ?

Well, it's not quite the same thing, but back when I was at uni, although I was studying Computer Studies, some of lectures were held in the health building, where all the nursing and other medical courses were taught. We'd always turn up good and early to those lectures to see all the hot nursing students leaving their lectures.

So, it just seems to be that those subjects attract the more well, attractive members of society. One possible explanation anyway.

I also am a fellow dental freak of nature. I had two rows of teeth on my lower jaw for a while when I was a kid (my adult teeth came up behind my baby teeth.) My parents teased me about being a shark. :(

Drilling doesn't bother me so much anymore. In my younger days, my dentist drilled without local anesthetic. The first time I saw the novocaine needle at the dentist, I was mildly spooked. I used the same trick I do with immunization shots, and that is to relax the muscles at the injection site as much as possible. I don't feel a thing.

Also, if it bothers you that much, FLOSS! (Yes, I am being a hypocrite. Sue me. :D)

I have no idea why people are so afraid of the dentist. I've never had a single bad experience with one. The numbing always worked when I got cavities drilled and the only annoying thing that came out of getting my wisdom teeth out was that I couldn't feel my chin for a day (ever try feeding yourself when you cant feel your mouth? you stab your lip a lot.)

Last time I went to the Dentist (IIRC when I was 12) I had two molars removed. I was just given some sort of anaesthetic that eased the pain just a little bit and didn't knock me unconscious (every little bit helps). Still hurt like hell, though.
