ok this is kinda weird, but i really like depressing anime. i know i probably sound really emo right now but thats not it, im not a depressed person, at all. i dont know, maybe just because it tends to be more memorable to me and have more of an impact, but i prefer anime with sad endings or a sad story. i just finished watching saikano the other day and im looking for my next series. without giving any spoilers, whats some of the saddest or most depressing anime you have seen?

the most depressing series i have seen are (in order of most depressing):
1. saikano
2. air
3. gungrave
4. berserk

i have also heard grave of the fireflies is really sad

Elfen Lied and Clannad are fairly emotional and at times (Elfen Lied constantly) depressing animé. And Grave of the Fireflies is indeed a tearjerker extraordinaire.

Monster, Gunslinger Girl and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry) has got tragic elements to them as well, though they're not the main themes.

Grave of the Fireflies and kuroshitsuji are the only anime that have made me cry. Kuroshitsuji's ending that is the series in general is quite upbeat.

You should watch this even if it's not quite what you are looking for it is definitely worth watching.

Angel Beats has some seriously sad moments that make you want to cry.

But overall the anime is a fairly happy one, it's hard to explain o_O

Still I'll just throw that out there.

When I watched this the first time I was just in pieces. It really hit me. I wasn't quite as prepared for it as I should have been!

If you think Air is depressing, just wait until you watch Clannad After Story.

Dragonball GT was depressing in the fact that it sucked.

Trust me, go and watch all of Dragonball and Dragonball Z, and then Watch Dragonball GT. You will cry out of despair and probably wont make it through the whole season, i wont blame you either.

Metropolis definitely has a more bitter-than-sweet tone and ending...

Also, anything made by Bones: Xam'd, Darker than Black, Wolf's Rain. I rest my case...

Paranoia Agent maybe.
Mushishi is quite melancholy and has some really bitter sweet stories.

Ghibli's version of Earthsea is rather depressing most of the time.

Same. I was "Sweet! Another Ghibli movie." But damn. It pretty much just turned my eyes into water, that's how sad it is.

It took me five tries to get through that. And afterwards there was a feeling of complete emptiness... Same with Gundam SEED Destiny really. The horror!

OT: Cowboy Bebop has a constant melancholy feel about it. I wouldn't call it depressing, but it sure carries some emotional weight (especially the ending).

I don't find it weird. Sometimes there's nothing better than a sad story. It helps you feel and express emotions that you don't feel as much, especially in like games and stuff.

Elfen Lied is pretty depressing. And I'm not sure if it's only me but I find Wolf's Rain REALLY depressing. It's not weird to like depressing anime! I think watching characters go through emotions like depression can be quite moving. :)

Fulll Metal Alchemist depresses me in many parts...
The series starts with the having to kill their recently resurrected mother who has become a disfigured monster for gods sake!

Although... its not as bad as... that episode... (Episode 8, all I'm sayin)
