How come no one has mentioned School days yet?
What I've seend of School Days is disturbing, fucked-up and highly emotional, so I would concur. God, the ending..

What's up with only having watched part of the series, but still having watched the ending?

I surprise not many people brought up Evangelion. But the chararctor can be seen as more of pain in the ass than depressing at times. But you can't say the ending wasn't depressing. I mean the movie not randomness that the episode or two shown.

I got sad at the end to Darker Than Black.......because I realized I would have to find a new anime to watch. I think the end to both Afro Samurai movies are kinda sad especially Resurrection. Thats all I got.....oh wait SOME parts in Fruits Baskets were somewhat dark. Metropolis got kinda dark at some parts.

Dragonball GT was depressing in the fact that it sucked.

Trust me, go and watch all of Dragonball and Dragonball Z, and then Watch Dragonball GT. You will cry out of despair and probably wont make it through the whole season, i wont blame you either.
It took me five tries to get through that. And afterwards there was a feeling of complete emptiness... Same with Gundam SEED Destiny really. The horror!

OT: Cowboy Bebop has a constant melancholy feel about it. I wouldn't call it depressing, but it sure carries some emotional weight (especially the ending).
Bang.

Grave of the Fireflies is defiantly the winner I think. It'd take someone with some pretty distant emotions to get through that and be depressed.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry).
You should watch this even if it's not quite what you are looking for it is definitely worth watching.
I second that motion, I enjoyed it quite a bit. For me the ending of Chrono Crusade was quite sad, might not be what your looking for thought. Elfen Lied is a sure bet for a depressing anime. I also tried watching Technozyle but It got boring, couldn't get into it.
