S'all right I'm only kidding. I'm not that much of a genre schtikler but I'm not overly fond of most Black Metal and At the Gates had always been pretty experimental and hard to define. As for Opeth, depends how you look at it. Lyrically I'd say Still Life going backwards were their most despondant and poetic while the ambience of the music from Blackwater Park onward still elicited a downtrodden reaction. I don't know what kind of shit Akerfeldt thinks he's pulling with Heritage though 0_0 heard a couple of sample tracks and it's got me kinda worried.Novs said:

Porcupine Tree's album Fear Of A Blank Planet is pretty fucking awesome. It's about how the angry middle-class youth wilfully separate from society, anaesthetise themselves with drugs and are consumed by apathy and cynicity. You might also want to check out the EP Nil Recurring which contains four outtakes that didn't make it to the final Fear Of A Blank Planet album.
This song is incredibly sad, but only if you know the story behind it.
The song is about the singers old girlfriend who got pregnant. At first he was scared, but later, "When I saw that heartbeat, I knew it wasn't a sin". Unfortunatly it ended in a miscarriage, and the child died.
You saved me having to post it. They played this song at my school on Anzac day, and I thought it was just going to be some shitty patriotic crap, but it ended up breaking my heart.Hemlet said:

You find Given to Fly depressing? I always find that song really uplifting. There's someone out to do nothing but good and spread love, and even when he gets attacked for that, "Well fuckers, he still stands". Is there a particular reason why it has the opposite effect for you?IBlackKiteI said:
As for my depressing selection it has to be Disintegration and Bloodflowers by The Cure. In particular, The Loudest Sound from the Trilogy show. You can see Robert Smith about to cry and it just kills me.
There's also a few songs on beautifulgarbage by Garbage that are pretty sad, like Drive You Home and Cup of Coffee. But then Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!) is on that album too, so it's hard to be depressed for long.
