A vault with
1) Extensive supplies of various metalworking tools - from forging to fine engraving
2) Virtually limitless supply of coal, brass and copper, lesser amounts of gold, steel, glass
3) Many extra water purifiers
4) Entertainment consisting mostly of various old adventure stories, most prominently Jules Verne
5) All engineering literature stops at the tech level of 1905
6) Everything that runs on electicity runs on its own battery pack, there are no generators

The goal - to observe whether a stempunk society will emerge and, if it does, can it survive.

Ooh, I've got one! I think...

Anyway, the vault will contain 500 humans, and 500 androids with human skin. 250 of each will be told that they are human, and the other 250 of each will be told they're not. The only forms of entertainment will be games and movies about wars with machines, e.g. Terminator, the Matrix, and other stuff about machines, like Ghosts in the Shell.

Cue the inevitable war between the humans and the androids. The vault will remain sealed until only either the humans or the androids remain.

Every single room has multiple cameras and everyone is forced to watch the 3/5/10 most embarrassing clips of the day.
--additional-- the 'winner' of most embarrassing cilp gets to choose the criteria for 'embarrassing' for the next day.

I got a few ideas so i've given them thir own number series.

Vault 801: The vault in filled with a group of 20 people (10men|10women of varying ages) who are insecure about their bodies.
The inhabitants are sedated and put in the vault nude with no cloths anywhere in the vault.
There is nothing reflective put into the vault so it is impossible for anyone to see themselves.
The purpose of this vault is to find out if exposure and the inability to see yourself amplify or reduce insecurity.

Vault 802: The vault is large and filled with tropical plant life to simulate a jungle.
2 tribes of people are put into the vault.
the Tibes each speak a different language and have no knowledge of each other or the language.
The purpose of the vault is to see whether these people will learn each others language and become one force, or become enemies and kill each other.

Vault 803: The vault is void of any type of music or anything that makes music. Randomly once per day anytime from 00:00 to 23:59 music from a random music genre is played going from muted to a nearly deafening level for 15 minutes. Everything else is as normal.
To see the effect on the human psyche, to test whether it causes people to fear music, become violent from stress or any other factors.

Vault 804: In the vault EVERYTHING is brightly coloured from different colours in the spectrum, and the lighting is very bright and constantly on 24 hours a day, trippy insane music is constantly played through speakers situated everywhere in the vault.
This vault is designed to study the effects of extreme stress and exhaustion on people, and to see if the outcome of these factors can be influenced by environmental factors.

Vault 805: The vault is designed to look like its been damaged by a massive explosion on the inside.
the lighting is constantly flickering with sparks coming from broken wires on the celing.
Every few days the sounds of alien beasts trying to break in is played.
This Vault is designed to study Xenophobia in people and how it effects their life and health.

Vault 806: The vault is filled with literature about a ferocious animal called a Kitten which preys on people and tries to descieve them with cuteness.
After a few generations, when the kitten becomes known by the dwellers as a monster, an event will start where one vault dweller will be removed every week and the sound of screaming and purring played as if the dweller was being maulled.
Then a group of kittens will be released into the vault every few weeks after the imhabitants learn to be petrified of them.
The inhabitants will be given blunt objects, such as lead pipes, to protect themselves from the kittens.
The purpose of this vault is to see if people can be taught to fear something which is harmless, and to see if this resorts in a mainly fight or flight reaction when exposed to it.

Vault 2030 is designed to hold 500 people for 300 years. It is given extra guns including a small fleet of armored cars, a G.E.C.K, all the required utilities, and is built to be massive. Three times the size of a normal Vault massive (Example: hallways must be at least 25 feet wide.)

The kicker? After 30 years, once everyone has gotten to know ALMOST everyone else, a mutagen will be released that randomly infects people and slowly turns them into furries. The mutagen also causes them to start having some animal characteristics. There is also a stash of the mutagen hidden in the Vault that could be used to infect half the United States.

The intent? To see if the non-mutants can get along with the other mutants or will it devolve into a vault destroying war with:
A. The furries winning and making a furry vault. They then leave and create a city like Vault City.
B. The furries winning and using the G.E.C.K to create an army, conquering the wasteland.
C. A but the humans winning.

toss in a bunch of hardcore shais, sunnis, lutherans, catholics, jews, Buddhists, Hindus, scientologists some folk religion and atheists, along with a group of undecided. Each group has enough people to sustain their population, and there is a vault election each year, with the vault overseer being able to play his message on the speakers for that year. Watch the religious wars began. Do new faiths emerge? What happens to the groups of undecided? Do faiths team up, put aside their differences, to work towards a common goal? Note, there are no weapons in the vault other that turrets that will kill the agressor to any fights. It would be interesting to see what happens.

First vault idea: Every resident in the vault blind since birth. No accomodations in the vault for the blind.

Second: All residents as they enter will be given a pet (Small breed of dog or cat). But the pets are deliberately set up to die within a few per week for the first few months, after the first three weeks.
thats just fucked up

Have only new born children of different ethnicities in the vaults raised completely by robots and taught no language, and sit back and see how they survive.

A vault full of people with no former gaming experience. Diablo 2 hardcore mode : if your character dies, you die. If you get level 99, you go free. If you help someone level-up and his character dies, you both die.

Vault is filled with scientists on the cutting edge of their fields. The systems in the vault are designed to fail at regular intervals, but there are enough spare parts and electronics to make repairs. Do their egos get in the way or do they work together to repair/improve upon the systems as they break down.

Vault is sealed but empty. Inside is all the nessessities to live very comfortably. A radio signal from the vault states that the vault enterance will open to the first one who can get through the various bobby traps that lie in the tunnels that lead to the vault. The test is to see what would a person do or go though to get the big reward.

There are two vaults. One is located on a military installation and the other is located in the city nearby. The draw of these vaults were that they would be connected together by a tunnel that would allow the personnel in the military vault to vist with their loved ones that lived in the city vault and has enough people in both to maintain a stable population. The tunnel does not exist. Each vault can run indepently of the other. It was designed to see how two groups of people can grow seperated from friends and loved ones. The overseers play the role of inept leaders, though they are actually observing and recording how people work around their general ineptitude.

They tried similar stuff with kids back when psychologists could get away with electrocution and stuff.

The babies died idiopathically.

slow gene splicing experiments, basically every person in the vault genes are slightly spliced with an animal and over the years we see what traits are the most important for human survival in the nuclear apocalypse. Before reproducing each person must go through a trail which will test their animal abilities, the trail will test different aspects needed to survive in a nuclear wasteland. In other words a vault with splicing followed by natural selection. Also I am pretty sure this would be a cool vault to encounter in a fallout game.
So, a vault filled entirely with furries. Okay. That actually would be an interesting vault to enter (doors opened by buttons on the floor meant for animal paws, really weird bathrooms).
