Except Deus Ex has never been about the protagonist. Deus Ex is at it's best when it is exploring big ideas. The original explored the dangers of a centralized power, culling the working class, artificial intelligence and turning humans into commodities that can be upgraded or thrown out. All of this done in a brilliantly written setting with interesting supporting characters and at the expense of the main character who was mostly a blank slate that existed as a means to solve problems for others, little more than a tool that eventually gained enough free will to choose its owner.

Human Revolution explored the effects of wealth disparity on opportunities, forced augmentation, discrimination, media control and of course trans-humanism. In this case your character was slightly more fleshed out, but most of the other major supporting characters lost some of their depth. On the plus side dialog battles were amazing.

Invisible War, despite being the worst game in the series was all about nature vs technology as well as control vs freedom. All of the endings where put into these context and even the coffee shops were used to illustrate this point.

So what grand questions would a new Deus Ex ask? There are a few out there, but unless it finds them and investigates them well the result will just be generic RPG-shooter hybrid rather than a true work of art like the original and Human Revolution.

I personally want a Montreal hub. Something that I understand was cut from the final game due to time restraints.

Would be nice to have a new protagonist (I'm a bit of sucker for franchise that does that), but I wouldn't mind Jensen coming back

I want the game to be set in 2029, hopefully be able to experience the majestic-12 coup and the west coast earthquake live

I don't really want another Deus Ex. I'd love more games that are like Deus Ex, as in a shooter/RPG hybrid allowing for a wide variety of paths and playstyles, all wrapped in a dreary cyberpunk package. However, I think the Deus Ex storyline has been finished. Human Revolution shows us how it all starts, and Invisible War shows us how it all ends. I think a new universe, and a new technology to explore, is in order.

What I want in terms of gameplay is a little more RPG. The augmentations are mostly fun and useful, but it's way too easy to max out most of the best ones. I want the upgrade screen to determine my playstyle a little more. The difference between the pacifist and the sadist was only a few augs.

I think the weapons were done almost perfectly. In the beginning, they're all fairly effective at their base stats, so you get to try out a few, but as the game progresses and more upgrades get thrown your way, you're forced to focus on a specific set of weapons or else they all become worthless. And the mods were quite fun (exploding rounds, anyone?). Just make more of the weapons a valid choice, such as the machine pistol, which never really amounts to anything.

Less backtracking through hubs. Walking around Detroit and Lower Hengsha twice each gets tiresome. It would also be cool if the hubs weren't split up into multiple chunks, but I'm not sure how viable that is from a technological standpoint.

Though I'm sure Eidos has learned this lesson at this point, I feel the need to repeat it: don't outsource the bossfights. You've proven, with The Missing Link, that you can make a good boss fight, so just do it yourself next time.

The gold and black color palette, while awesome in its uniqueness and symbolic value, is an idea that needs revision. The same color palette for the whole game really grated on me. Perhaps apply different color palettes to each hub depending on that place's specific issues, with one or more that permeate the entire game to represent the overarching conflict?

A non anti-climactic ending (really, that ending was pretty mediocre compared to the potential it had) Better boss fights, and a protagonist with more emotion then a spoonful of sawdust.

But in all honesty if they can't reach the standard of the first game, let alone surpass it, then just let it be, HR was good enough to be a last installment, even if only to ease the pain of invisible war.

Honestly, I think it's going to be a remake of the first game. That's what it looked to be leading up to at the end of HR. On the plus side (the remake isn't really a neg, it's a big opportunity to correct the flaws of the original), it means a better version of Invisible War.

That or maybe we get to play as Paul Denton in his own adventure, that'd be cool.

Balanced boss fights. I think Arkham Asylum/City provides a fantastic example of how to mix stealth and combat properly.

An outcome based at least somewhat on the actual decisions you've made during the game, and not left to a single, semi-arbitrary, all-encompassing decision at the very end.
Yeah basically this... that's basically all the major problems... though skippable boss fights like in the original would be cool... also, a bit more freedom of movement couldn't hurt, with less invisible walls... even if it does make the game easier to break... it just leaves the game more open to player input, character building and true choice... which in turn, plays into the whole whole idea of widening character building and player choice, via... you know not making anything in particular, or any combination of skills necessary... which is really where the series needs to move from here...<.<

Also, Weapon skill... being proficient in all weapons off the bat takes a lot of fun out of it... in the original the weapon skills were a big part of character building as well and really helped determine how the player would progress through the game...

Also melee weapons... one click kills are boring...

You know they are making a thief 4, right?
Unfortunatly i know, but no news has come out in 3 years, so hopefully it will get canceled.

Nothing good will come out of a next-gen Thief.

Let's see.
No Bosses.
More npc buildup (both antagonist and ally).
Bigger maps.
Better Stealth.
Less Yellow.
Harder.
More balanced combat. (and ability to avoid combat 100%)
More balanced Augments.
Return of skills.
Return of lockpicks.
No health/energy regen.
Better ending.
No "press X to win" abilities, bring back melee weapons.
No stupid "old girlfriend" subplot (seriously, i hate everything involving Megan Reed, nothing against romace subplots, but those should be 100% optional in a game like Deus Ex, if in it at all).

Posibly some character customization, but that's pretty down on the list of priorities.
