Despite corporate belief, you get more sales if you include all of the content in the game rather than waving it in front of people as an incentive to purchase and barring it from the rest of us. Those people you are holding the content from would have purchased the game anyway, so holding it back from them will only make them mad and will even drive off sales.

As I've said before I can't wait for the previous generation to die in a ditch. Once they are gone actual gamers will be able to step in and actually do something that gamers want.

SE was seeing it as choosing what perks you can get while customers were seeing it as what perks will be blocked off to them instead. Considering some of the higher stuff was story based content it was pissing people off. Basically it boils down to "you will lose a limb in a fight, you just get to choose what limb you lose.
But it's not like that was going to be locked off permanently, right? I mean it was basically free dlc. Steam did similar thing with borderlands 2 if I recall correctly. I'm usually on the side of outrage but this I just don't get.

I'd like to propose to game enthusiasts who dislike the current pre-order practices to offer consumer friendly solutions that would benefit people who preorder without gating non-day 1 adopters from non-cosmetic content. Aside from my discounted DLC/Season Pass idea, what would you folks consider a decent pre-order bonus?
Why? Seriously, why? Why does preordering have to entail some kind of "special snowflake" status?

Here's my proposal: remove all pre-order bonuses. Period. Pre-orders made sense where copies of something were potentially limited. This still happens with console launches and a very limited number of games (usually specialist imports that are likely to be in small numbers, I intend to preorder SAO Lost Song for precisely that reason) but for the vast, vast majority of games there is ZERO reason to pre-order as far as the consumer goes.

The entire reason for them gating content as a pre-order bonus is to try and get more people to pre-order which SOLELY benefits them as a business; because as a consumer there is no longer any actual 'need' to preorder. Its a fundamentally anti-consumer thing that only serves to benefit businesses by giving them guaranteed day 1 sales.

On topic: Good. Was a mindblowingly stupid idea as it was. Now can we please get to work on killing off retailer-specific preorder bonuses now? Thanks.

*snippus ex:a post edited* at the very least get rid of the "exclusive mission" bullshit, until then, call me when you've released the "Ultimate Edition"
Agreed.

The boosts to starting equipment feel like cheating and I can take or leave the cosmetics.
They don't really feel like content, more an optional extra, but a mission?
Not the sort of thing anyone likes to see being held back.
That still rankles.

Abandoning the preorder mess, well, that is the right move to make, got to acknowledge it.

You can kind of see the logic that led to them trying it which I'm sure came from noticing the success some kickstarters have in unlocking stretch goals and then trying to marry it with the concept of building loadouts.
All on paper (or the whiteboard) it must have looked sleek and attractive.
In the cold light of day it's just another idea that should have got the marketing team a rolled up newspaper on the nose.

yes

however, at that point it kind of defeats the point of preordering

they burned a lot of people with the first deus ex (hr) splitting a bunch of stuff up and then later on just selling the entire goty for a discounted price

like, here's these people who bought this game early, and they don't get the entire thing because they're all retailer split, and then later they gotta pay for the other stuff for extra money, and then they release the entire package for less than what they spent

unless it's a multiplayer game, a swag edition bundle (and if you're keeping it for a collection, you wouldn't open the box anyway), or you're a reviewer/streamer, there's no reason to buy day one or even day twenty anymore unless you're at the point in your life where you still believe santa's real

Publishers may eventually learn that any scheme to increase pre-orders is going to make a lot of very vocal people mad. It's weird, I don't doubt this game is going to be good myself. Square Enix has a pretty solid record so far as game releases are concerned, for the most part. I think they should have some good will left after the last game to be honest. But, publishers just need to learn that pre-orders are, for the most part, completely frowned upon. Too many people have been burned by this point, even if Square Enix themselves have not done a whole lot of the burning.

I'll just wait for the Director's Cut. No point in buying the game twice for the complete experience. I pre-ordered last time and got screwed over by Square-Enix and Eidos Montreal.

amazing. never thought i will read something like this.
im still not sure if i ever will get it on day one. too many games come out early next year im eager to play. mirrors edge 2, resi zero, rise of the tomb raider (when ever this will be released for pc) and this game. but since they have released a directors cut edition for HR, i think i just wait for this version. maybe they will make some changes as well as they did with HR.

Still shit because instead of, I don't know, giving pre-orders the PRE-ORDER BONUSES they have to try and get one last dig. You whiney fuckers don't get all this cool stuff for free, only the walking wallets that were encouraging our shit practices do. Well fuck you too Squinex, better games are coming out anyway.

Even so, I still hate any type of content that is not available to people because they had the audacity to not have 60$ US lying around on day-one,
Dude, the release date is Feb 23. If you can't put together 60$ in 5 months... well, I don't know what to say. In that case you're probably 12 and waiting on an allowance. Pre-orders are typically out 4-6 months (if not longer) before a release. If you know you're going to want the game then you have plenty of time to scrap up 60$ and hell, even if you didn't, most stores (like gamestop) allow you to pre-order with as little as 5$. You can then pick up the game weeks after the release and still get the bonuses. If you're an adult, saying money is the issue is a load of crap. You have more than enough time, even on the most limited budgets, to get your shit together. If you want the bonuses take the coins you find in your couch, go to gamestop, and preorder.

I don't understand people who complain about preorder bonuses. You have more than enough time to save up the money, even to read pre-release reviews, and still get your bonuses. Anyone who doesn't take advantage of this does so at their own fault.

What in the world are you talking about? They said they're giving the bonuses to everyone who pre-ordered, everyone who wants to pre-order from now on, and to everyone who buys it on day 1. Did you not read it, or not understand it?

EDIT: "Walking wallets"? Preorders don't cost anything EXTRA, they're the exact same price they are a month after release. Have you EVER bought a game at full price? Oh, you must be a walking wallet then I guess. Your insults make absolutely no sense.

It's funny how people are willing to get up in arms over things like this, but if exclusive content is offered for, say, the Playstation, like an extra mission or something, then not as many seem to care. It's only when you attach the word 'pre-order' that mobs start reaching for their pitchforks in such a massive quantity such that a company like Square-Enix backs down.
What's really funny is people like you who come along to threads like this thinking your so fucking clever when your not. People had every right to complain about this shit. Just because there are also console exclusives doesn't mean they should be quiet about this. It has to start somewhere, and this is as good a place as any.

You know what though, the whole thing still sucks, because it's still pushing pre-orders. I personally wait until there are reviews and we find out exactly if it's a game worth getting (and worth getting at full cost), but pre-order incentives, especially "bonus missions" basically go against being a responsible consumer.

If you watch the video it explains that you can choose one item from every tier, but all this content is complete. So do you really think they're going to give it all away or just pick one set (the shit stuff like the art book) and sell the rest (like the story mission)? So my qualm is that all these pre-order bonuses are done but they're going to be chopped up and sold separately.

As for the second part, I did misread and think that those who already pre-ordered were going to get all the stuff and new pre-orders would only receive some of the stuff. Sad part is that sounds plausible in todays' "consumer friendly" market. That one was my fault, thanks for pointing it out.
