Never played it. Got is as a free gift from a friend for the PS2. Started playing it but couldnt get past the graphics and herky jerky gameplay. Youve convinced me to go at it again though

Barley even started it been sitting in my "to play" pile for years, first level was horrid had more fun wandering the main building place talking to everyone then got lost after about 10 minutes on the second level gave up, maybe someday Ill give it another go.
Deus Ex is my favourite game of all time, but there are some ways that it hasn't aged well; most notably in the sub-par AI. I still think the graphics hold up pretty well for a game released in 2000. But i just love the game seeming as it has one of the best storylines ever, great characters and intelligent dialouge. I found the storyline to be just as good as a lot of the praised sci-fi films out there. It is also still one of the few games where you can often make choices that really affect the stoyryline and outcome of events in a strong way. You also make many choies in terms of gameplay. Often there are games that claim to have freedom and only do one or the other. It also has a great soundtrack. But anyways, i've been playing the game since it first came out, and i'm not sure how someone who's only played it for the first time now would react. A lot of older games (like Goldeneye, Super Mario 64, Diablo 2, Zelda: OOT) i suppose might nowadays seem dissapointing.
Alright, here's what I have to say about the game itself. I liked the gameplay. I thought it worked really well. The gun mechanics were a little strange when it came to things like pistols dealing more or less damage because your just better with them (I'm still shooting the guy in the fricken head). The main problem I had with the mechanics was the difference between killing someone and knocking them out. Other than a feeling of superiority there really isn't any difference in the game if you massacre the people or just stun them into oblivion. Of course there is the totally non-violent stealth way of just running by everyone but that doesn't work 100%. I just thought the game's whole "you don't have to kill anyone" aspect would be a bit deeper. That said I have to say the game has better level design than any game I've played to date.
But this all leads me to the game's big flaw. Its story is fairly mediocre. A thrilling tale of conspiracy doesn't really do it for me when there isn't really a hell of a lot of depth to the conspiracy. Especially when the story seems only to be something to drive forward gameplay as opposed to being something that does both advance the game and create something interesting. For a game so widely celebrated for being deep I found it disappointingly shallow. The endings could have been better executed than a few lines of dialogue and some text, as well.
All in all, good game with a mediocre story.

What I loved about this game is that if felt like your actions made a difference. I always remember when I went through the second level guns blazing and won. I then got suited up for the next mission and went to the armoury, the guy criticised me and refused to give me ammo, because that wasn't how policing should be done. Annoying, but awesome. Small things like that really impressed me.
The thing that I loved most about Deus Ex is the feeling it gave you of finding and doing things that you shouldn't. Sticking your nose into where it isn't wanted and finding a secret base or plot. Setting up a trap that made a level really easy.
The AI was terrible at the time. Most of the games flaws were more obvious at the time including poor performance and high system requirements which are not now. The flaws are generally overlooked because people didn't notice at the time or just enjoyed the game too much.Chaosut said:

You do have to kill one person in the game - Howard Strong. The guy I mentioned did it by jumping on his head from a great height.

Developers like Warren Spector and Peter Molyneaux, Carmak etc.... they are a dieing breed. Developers that craft games because they want to make something great.
When I talk about Fallout 3 being an under-acheivement, its Deus Ex that I use as a comparison.

Fuck I love Deus Ex. As far as I'm concerned it's level of detail has not let been rivaled (by any game I've played at least) Apart from Mass Effect. Maybe. Either way, it was incredibly ahead of it's time. The GFX sucked when it came out, and they look pretty poor now, but if you can get past that you have one of the best games ever.

Of course! You're totally right. Howard Strong is the one person you absolutely have to neutralise in some way. I never pulled off the whole 'Anna Navarre opening doors for you' thing, but I know about it.
It is such an awesome game though. Pissed me off, though, cause jjust after i killed that really important guy in france (not saying his name)I got stuck in that room. I had shut the secret hatch behind me and that can only be opend from the outside. and i had used all my lockpicks and explosives so i couldnt get past any other doors. and just to top it off, i had saved right after i had locked myself in the room and my last save was in china.
I'd have to disagree - The second exposes all three endings of the first. Your point is definitely valid, though - Take 'Deus Ex' out of the title, and it turns into a decent game.
