The completely random deaths in Sierra's Gold Rush! game. Forget insane moon logic that screws you hours later, you were dead before you started the GAME and it didn't bother to tell you. Some of the random 'nothing you can do' deaths (that as it states, there was nothing you could do...you as the player made no mistakes, the game just decided to kill you) have their random trigger flag so far back that you effectively have to start a new game and hope for the best to get another roll of the dice on 'will I randomly die this time'.

specifically off the top of my head, when before a boss fight there is a cutscene that is NOT SKIPPABLE, especially when it is decently hard the first time through so you are probably gonna do it a few times

some people might remember this...

that cutscene is a solid 2:20 at least, and its annoying as balls to have to repeat that as many times as I did..

GOD DAMMIT DEVELOPERS PLEASE STOP! that is such a turn off to playing your game when you do that..

...What the hell are you on about?
It's called an "analogy".

I'm comparing the ending of Fallout 3 to building a bridge; The ending of Fallout 3 was so stupid and made about as much sense as building a bridge with a hole in the middle of it. Bethesda then later made a DLC that tryed to fix it and at the same time added a bunch of stuff as an attempt to make up for their mistake.

Oh do give it a rest. It was not that bad, for fuck sakes!! I've beaten that game something like 10 times, and damn it I could think of dungeons way worse than that one!
Perhaps you'd prefer to play games on Super Easy Mode.

They already have that it's called streamlining :p

Dick move: Any game that has 1 shot deaths or failures and doesn't have skippable cutscenes. I like the challenge but having to sit through the same scene ten times isn't fun.

Not being able to use your companions made perfect sense. They hadn't had anything planned after the final battle at the purifier. You let your companion go in...and then what? You activated it, well done. The Enclave would still be a threat, would you prefer they just left it as that?

Atleast with Broken Steel, we had closure with the Enclave. All of the players hard work throughout the main quest had finally payed off. You had started purifying, and distributing clean water through The Capital Wasteland.
There was absolutely no legitimate reason as to why your companions couldn't activate the purifier.

Charon is under contract to serve you right? Well then he should activate the purifier if I tell him too, he has nothing to lose.

Fawkes is suppossed to be a nice guy who owes a debt of gratitude to the Lone Wanderer and he is also immune to radiation.

Sergeant RL-3 is a robot or follows your commands, being a robot he doesn't even have organs so he really has nothing to worry about.

The Enclave shouldn't be a threat anyway to begin with, we destroyed the oil rig with a nuclear explosion, we blew up Raven Rock their main HQ in DC, we blew up heaps of them on the way to the purifier so why should they still be a threat, not to mention both of their highest ranking members.

Closure? Uhhh, shouldn't we have been given closure in the ending?

I'm pretty sure that's what the whole point of the ending narration is for...closure.

I disliked the Landsmeet for reasons mentioned in the OP. Losing the duel made me stop plaing DAO for couple months.

What would you prefer, a little slideshow, or to go around the world and see what you had done?
A longer slideshow that actually explains what happened to all of the major factions and people I met on my journey and gives proper closure.

You know like what New Vegas did?

The thing with Fallout 3 is that the only significant thing that happens is the BoS start a pure water business and if you insert FEV then a couple of people get sick. Nothing big changes, almost everything is the same and even after Broken Steel there are still Enclave located in the game that keep respawning.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II. Charging full price for a game with almost 0 replay value that takes 3 and a half hours to beat. Lucas Arts should give everyone who bought that game a refund. Twice.
this!
I really liked the first one and wanted to see a decent continuation of the story, what we got was a mess, a short mess!

Final Fantasy XI: Absolute Virtue. Game developer dickery at its best.
Ahahaha. So true. A few have been able to beat AV, though. But I still don't know if anyone has beat the Pandemonium Warden, especially after the 2 hour despawn timer.

What I love the most is that when SE put the despawn timer onto those mobs, all they told the community was "You're just doing it wrong, morons. It's not that hard." I find that quite funny. I mean, in a gaming world where difficulty curves are getting lower and bosses are getting easier, it's nice to see someone sticking to the "They'll figure it out eventually" theory of gameplay.
The XI playerbase has figured out how to kill both AV and PW. In fact we figured out PW before AV.

Awaiting next unstoppable force of destruction please!
How about raising the level crap after, what, ten years? All of the characters I had maxed out became more or less worthless and I was just casually playing. I don't have time for end game or getting any the new items really. That was the thing that ironically got me to quit.

Infamous. The part where you have to choose whether to save Trish or six doctors. You take the "good" route and save the doctors and Trish falls to her death.

You take the "evil" route and try to save Trish, only its not her, she is on the other building and she still falls to her death.

Fuck you game. Fuck you.

Should've stuck around a few months after the cap was increased. Abyssea streamlined the XP grinding process, and generally made endgame approachable by even casual players. A change for the better most would say. But rather than derail this thread into XI discussion, send me a PM if you want more details. for now, I'm goin to bed.

Bad Company 2: They had the wonderful idea of forcing you to level up your character several items before giving you the class-features you ought to have in the first place.

A reasonable dick move was a recent L4D2 mutation called Lone Gunman. No special infected except boomers, and only a magnum. That would have been fine if they hadn't jacked up the infected damage.
On expert, one hit from a zombie did 100 damage. What. The. Hell. Valve?
Valve had all but admitted the L4D2 mutations are experimental, but the recent Lone Gunman release was a replay, and I was surprised they hadn't lessened the common damage.

My solution was to not play it. Last Man on Earth was much better.

The dick move I recently discovered: Enforced linear play of Raven Sofware's Singularity. There are no saves and no chapter selection. None. The only way you get to replay a given chapter is by playing to that chapter from the beginning. Thanks Raven.

Worse yet, save points are frequently unannounced, and it frequently locks and bars the door behind you. Thanks Raven.

Then, the game is rife with secrets, extra boosts and sometimes story elements that are out of the way, so you want to be able to backtrack. You want to be able to thoroughly investigate an area, and then the door you passed through abruptly closes and locks. Thanks Raven.

I think unskippable cutscenes to be a dickmove...
But furthermore...can't think of much really.

Wait! MW2 for needing the grenade launcher to unlock the shotgun attachment!
If they even had half a brain, you would switch that!

The railroading in Fable 2. I didn't realise it while I was playing, but got very angry retroactively after reading this [http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=2105] very interesting series.
It's the classic tabletop gaming trope: The entire game is just the author wanking off as he pits his Ultimate Evil Guy against His Ultimate Awesome Weapon. You win not because you were brave, strong, or resourceful, but because you did what you were told. The artifact did all the winning for you. [...]

Whatever you do, do not waste time listening to what [the final boss] says, hoping that some logic will emerge from this wreck of a character. If you take too long, Reaver will kill-steal the final boss from you and no that is not a joke.
Again, I did not notice this when I first played Fable 2. I did notice, however, that my character became covered in shiny blue lines for no reason. Because I wanted by character to be a sexy gunslinger, I did consider that a dick move.

Already been said but fallout 3 pissed me off.
It?s a sandbox, explore for the sake of exploring kind a game and you can?t play past the end of the main quest even if you survive it? And you for some reason have to go in yourself or seen Lyons in even tho there are companions who are completely immune to radiation. Granted it seems they realised this and created broken steal to fix it so I don?t have to leave that quest unfinished (which annoys the hell out of me).
