It does make sense that way.The last Ice Age killed most of the dinosaurs so a nuclear winter would probably have a similar effect. That does fit since most animals are a reasonable size but it still doesn't explain the super mutants . I think they were mentioned in Fallout Tactics , and something about being created in a lab post-apocalypse.

I'm pretty sure there are some places not affected by nukes. Like the south pole, some pacific islands,Africa, and Australia.

Probably not, considering that every nuclear power and their allies all support the MADD strategy still to this day. Any nuclear exchange between the US and China would spill over to allied countries just on political principle.

By which you mean "some places in America got nuked, thus 95% of the world did"
A war between China and America that results in America being nuked does NOT result in the end of humanity. One of the beautiful things about FO is that you have no idea what is on the outside.
"Allistair Tenpenny came to the Capital Wasteland from Great Britain to seek his fortune, so that alone tells you that the U.K. was also hit in the war. And if he came to U.S. to succeed, that says a lot about how screwed up Europe must be. So we just allude, a little bit, to the state of the rest of the world. We like to leave a lot to the players' imaginations, and somebody like Tenpenny serves as a catalyst for those thoughts." - Emil Pagliarulo

(Apparently this has already been quoted, but whatever.)

Madagascar.

They could survive a pandemic, I'm fairly certain they could survive a nuke.

Canada. Seriously why would the Chinese or the Americans nuke Canada.

[small] But its still probably fucked up from the radiation. [/small]
Canada was part of the U.S by then. Yeah I know that sucks...
Yup in one of the slides it says that the USA annexed Canada. And ya it blows.

Uh, in the Fallout universe, Canada was actually annexed by the USA shortly before the "Great War" as the 2-hour falling of the bombs was called.

Edit: Rofl, just did a quick search through the thread up to my post; nearly 10 people mentioned this before me.

maybe anywhere that WASN'T a super-power at the time, like africa or austrailia (note that in both these examples you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between them and the capital wasteland)

and for those saying europe, the ussr was one of the main ppl in the nuclear exchange.

the situation is radiation moves like a cloud by wind. so any area not hit would still get a revere radiation dose. chances are any country not touched by a direct nuke would still be ruined.

A european island near antarctica?
Antarctica is basically the South Pole.
Europe is in the Northern Hemisphere.
Did you mean the North Pole ?
Actually, European countries such as France, Britain and Norway with a history of naval exploration do hold sovereignty over islands in the southern ocean, as well as laying claim to portions of Antarctica. Norway, for instance, controls Bouvet Island, the most remote island on earth.

What of Australia, though? Surely a place that secluded must have gotten off easy.

I think Australia was spared the carnage in the lore, wasn't it?
Directly, at least. I also recall hearing that they fell into anarchy during their isolation from the rest of the world.
Well, FO3 is partially inspired by the Mad Max movie, so I'd say that sounds about right.
funnily enough australia realistically would be one of the first countries targeted, due to being the location of the jindalee radar network

Remember, the US annexed Canada thats why.
And it is intresting that we only see post-nuclear America when a lot of intresting concepts and ideas could emerged from exploring a European wasteland. Or maybe an area not hit by the bombs, but still holding out against the post-nuclear world.

.........it was a worldwide nuclear exchange between China and the U.S.

its safe to say that there isnt a place not fucked by radiation.
Well thats true that the radiation would have spread everwhere on the planet, but ther must have been some country out in the middle of nowhere that didn't get directly hit.

I bet you that Madagascar didnt get hit, or mabye the Fedearted States of Microasia.
well, now that you mention it, maybe the Republic of Molossia, thats a very, VERY, strong maybe.

Wasn't the Republic of Dave in Fallout 3 supposed to be a poke at it?
