Did hype ruin Brawl?

Now, Super Smash Bros Brawl has been out for a while. And I loved the game to death. Still do. But I recently thought about how hyped it was and negative of a backlash it got from certain people. Then I thought about Melee, and how it got such an overwhelmingly good reception, which brawl got, but with a large outcry to accompany it.

So, then I though how the hype for the game might have ruined it. Melee got almost no coverage, save for maybe a trailer at Space World or something. But Brawl. It was glorified. Trailer after trailer. Character reveal after character reveal. It was a big deal. And Brawl got alot of flack for being "overhyped" or "overrated". It was still fun, but It didn't feel quite as fresh as melee.

So...did hype sort of ruin it? Did spoiling the appearance of Sonic in Brawl kind of make people want more than what they were given? Did people really expect Geno to be in Brawl?

Hype didn't really ruin it.

I've heard nothing but positive things, really. Aside from the people who wouldn't really be interested in it, anyway.

And part of it might be the removal of Melee characters.

Sure, Mewtwo sucked.

BUT HE WAS FUCKING MEWTWO

Also, the fact that it's still the same price it was when it launched at most US retailers screams "huge hit". Because it's still selling so damn well that it doesn't need to justify a price drop.

Whoa, Brawl came out in, like, 2008?

But yeah, from what I gather, a lot of people REALLY loved Melee and then thought Brawl felt awkward and different to play, I guess. Kinda like me and Persona 4, though I'm trying to get into that.

The massive hype probably contributed too.

Mewtwo was great, he had a high jump, a great recovery move and he had the most powerful throws in the game.

Hype will always diminish the experience I find.

Brawl was fantastic either way. Apart from how they threw in tripping over because Nintendo didn't want people to play the game competitively.

I think part of the reason some people like to rip on Brawl (particularly people on the Escapist) is because Yahtzee ripped on Brawl, and humanity is nothing if not willing to parrot the voice of whoever has popularity.

Personally I love playing Brawl with my friends. But that's just me.

Well, everyone I knew played Link. Because...I dunno.

I thought Link sucked, myself. I never got to use Mewtwo much, either. I love Kirby too much.

So, the sucking is based on what the people I played with said.

Hype doesn´t change the game quality. Brawl is a big shit and it´s not because of hype that some people (me, playing in a friend´s Wii) were dissapointed with the fucking game.

Yes it did for me at least. I was so hyped up for it, read the site every day for updates, and when it came out, I was disappointed. Not the games fault, honestly, it was a really good game, but the fact is that nothing would have met my expectations for the game. Never got too hyped for a game afterwards.

I prefer Melee, it just feels faster and more fun.

I feel that the amount of hype leading up to Brawl's release was completely unrealistic for any game to satisfy short of causing an early solar eclipse when you inserted the disc. Compared to the original and Melee, the character roster is considerably better balanced (Meta Knight isn't brock he's just slightly unbalanced but he IS beatable). Everything from the visual art direction, an actual story plus classic and All Star Mode, trophies, CD's, new stages, online, and a level editor makes me surprised to see this game get bashed for not being deep. Yes we no wave-dashing isn't a "glitch" but a mechanic that's complete bull because if it was then it would be introduced into the game by the developers in a mode fluidly.

Looking back to Melee as far as balancing makes this very guilty compared to Brawl. In Melee, if you could wave-dash well with Fox, or Marsh then I feel really sorry for the opponent because, W-Dashing onto the edge to guard, short laser hopping, sprite abuse, and that fast fall doesn't have any balance whatsoever. In Smash 64, don't even get me started. A good quick Kirby player? IN THE AIR? The amount of jumps and floaty physics he had in addition to his back kicks made him the Edge God.

Brawl gets the hate because its programming and physics can't be manipulated in a way to break meta-game styles. It's my favorite and fun of the 3 games and each title got progressively better. The thing is in all the Smash series, there is NO opponent/character that is unbeatable therefore there are no brocken choices. Anyone can beat anyone with enough knowledge of that particular opponents moveset, how that affects yours, and studying your opponents habits and patterns, everyone has a particular style/pattern to pick up with enough time and evaluation.

Here is a list of the un-balanced characters from each title..look;

Smash 64: Kirby
Smash Melee: (with W-Dashing popular) Fox, Marth, and Falco
Smash Brawl: Meta Knight

I think most of the backlash was people who (kinda like with DA2) wanted more of exactly the same game but didn't get that.

I'm hoping that the 3DS version is gonna be with Brawl's characters and story, while it has Melee's speed and gameplay.

It will be. THE PERFECT GAME.

But, OT, it went overboard with the hype. Brawl was amazing. It had great characters, an amazing story, and astonishing graphics.

The gameplay was slightly weaker, but the addition of Final Smashes more than made up for it.

Still waiting for the addition of KLONOA though..... (hint hint, Namco!!)

I don't know what it was about it, but I just didn't enjoy the game as much as I did melee. It was still a fun game though.

No, it was ruined by the fact I only had to play one mode to unlock all characters, and then an extra mode for all levels. Felt like I hadn't earned things, becaus eI barely played multiplayer before that. And there were still few characters I'd use.

It needed some characters like MewTwo that only come along threw specific stuff instead of, "Do this mode, then go here in these elvels for these 3 other characters, or alternatively jsut play classic for those other guys."

Also characters were made heavier, it ruined it for my brother.
Also knowing all characters that were going to be in it before it came out ruined it. Melee had SUPRISES.

I think it was more of a question of how big a step up Melee from the original Super Smash Bros. Brawl was a step up too, but not as overwhelming. In addition, Brawl caused a stir with the tournament players, so it wasn't inarguably better in everyone's eyes.

Only 1 game has ever lived up to hype in my opinion. (Persona 4) So yes, hype did ruin Brawl in my opinion.

Nope. It was just as mediocre as all of it's counterparts, maybe with a bit less replay value.
