Hype didn't ruin it.

Competitive, "Stop-Having-Fun-Guys" players ruined it.
Those guys ruin everything.

Nope. It was just as mediocre as all of it's counterparts, maybe with a bit less replay value.
Yeah. I suppose. The first was a brand-new franchise and the second tripled the content of it's predecessor. I think Brawl was more of a refinement. Melee 2.0, maybe, with more content and characters. Still very fun, though.
Perhaps the hype took away the surprise that kept you pushing through the past two to get new stages and characters.

Brawl is great. Definitely has the best single-player modes of any Super Smash game, and the multiplayer is as solid as ever. It's the most skill-based fighting game out there in the new generation. No matter how much hype there was, it doesn't take away from these aspects.
Why is it the most skill based fighter? And how can it be as solid as ever with movement techniques removed and random tripping?

/doesn't play Smash Bros.

You'd think any questions on Brawl would be answered in the three-or-so years its been out...

I don't think so. I don't recall much hype over it either.

I really don't think hype affected me in any way. I could see how it would affect a lot of the players, but I knew what to expect from melee and was honestly very impressed with its sequel. (Aside the fact they took Mewtwo out!! Lucario sucks anyway)

I think brawl was a bit slower, gameplaywise, than melee. Hype didn't ruin it for me though, still love that game though I can see some people not liking the slower combat.

Only if you let it.

I read that damn blog every day and was still hyped when it came, and I loved it.

HOnestly though, I wouldn't gauge people liking a certain game off of haters on the internet.

If we did, games like Halo, COD and the later Final Fantasies would be the worst games ever.

The more people that are interested in something, the more that will complain about it. It's statistically likely, and that's not even taking into consideration the very human trait of hating for the sake of hating.

Now, Super Smash Bros Brawl has been out for a while. And I loved the game to death. Still do. But I recently thought about how hyped it was and negative of a backlash it got from certain people. Then I thought about Melee, and how it got such an overwhelmingly good reception, which brawl got, but with a large outcry to accompany it.

So, then I though how the hype for the game might have ruined it. Melee got almost no coverage, save for maybe a trailer at Space World or something. But Brawl. It was glorified. Trailer after trailer. Character reveal after character reveal. It was a big deal. And Brawl got alot of flack for being "overhyped" or "overrated". It was still fun, but It didn't feel quite as fresh as melee.

So...did hype sort of ruin it? Did spoiling the appearance of Sonic in Brawl kind of make people want more than what they were given? Did people really expect Geno to be in Brawl?
Yes. I was diehard, the excitement when it arrived was unbelievable. 2 years I waited for that game and in retrospect i'd enjoy a match of melee anyday over brawl.

For some people brawl was servilely hyped. My biggest complaint is the amount they advertised sonic and snake before hand.....and put sonic near the end of the game....I'd understand if the single player wasn't what it was.

the reason why we feel brawl was overrated, was because it is over-rated. the balancing effort from melee left the game feeling mechanical, and MR. Game and Watch's Super Smash effectively won games because of it's size. yes melee had issues, they were not issues that made the game boring and unrealistically painful to play.

but some of those are the worst games ever. Halo has never had a game better then "Sub Par". call of duty can never be good again, seeing as the only studio with any skill in terms of making games, got completely destroyed. and certain final fantacy games are terrible.

I'm hoping that the 3DS version is gonna be with Brawl's characters and story, while it has Melee's speed and gameplay.

It will be. THE PERFECT GAME.

But, OT, it went overboard with the hype. Brawl was amazing. It had great characters, an amazing story, and astonishing graphics.

The gameplay was slightly weaker, but the addition of Final Smashes more than made up for it.

Still waiting for the addition of KLONOA though..... (hint hint, Namco!!)
I don't know, I would think that Melee-level speed would make things unnecessarily difficult on a handheld, especially when you consider how random and chaotic SSB is already. Personally, I think Brawl's speed would fit quite well on the 3DS, but we'll see.

What? Brawl was ruined?

I was so happy Brawl came out. Loved all the characters in it. And so glad they made the AI less brutal. When I played melee and was trying to do the event on Majora's Mask, all the CPU's would only attack me, despite it being a FUCKING FREE FOR ALL YOU CHEAP BASTARDS! Really, I liked melee, but it was very unforgiving.

Because it's all about timing. No insta-KO combos, and button mashing is useless. The reverse of which is true for every other fighting game out there. Random tripping is completely harmless. Never lost a game because of it. Hell, never even lost a single life because of it.
Not sure how it is more about timing then other games. I also don't really see how making combos less powerful makes the game more skill full (and final smashes seem to be kill combos most of the time.) Don't know what you mean by saying mashing is useless, is it because the links require precision like SF2 links and GG FRCs instead of allowing you to mash out inputs?

Do you play other fighting games? Cause I love em and I can't name one I'm playing right now where button mashing amounts to anything and timing isn't hugely important. Instant KO combos? Are you only comparing to bad fighters? Random tripping is a dumb limiter. Its...random. Limiters should be skill checks of some sort, or its just luck.

I honestly think Blazblue; Continuum shift is the most balanced, skill based fighter out there. Love that game.
