Did I overreact?

So I was leaving my local Gamestop today when a man drove up in a silver SUV, and struck up a conversation with me. He claimed to be from a delivery agency and had a home theater system in the back that was worth thousands of dollars, but was not listed on his delivery list. He offered to sell it to me for only a few hundred dollars. I claimed to only have my debit card and he drove away.

Feeling that something was wrong about the whole senario, I called the police and gave them all the information I had. Talking this over later with my friends and family, some of them are saying that calling the cops may have been overreacting a bit, as the man didn't technicaly do anything illegal. This is bugging me as I really don't want to waste the cops time if it turns out to be nothing.

So, Escapists, what do you think? Should I have called the cops or just shrugged the whole thing off as the man being a weirdo?

I don't really see any problem with calling the cops. It sounds pretty shady to me. That's probably what I would have done.

Yeah definitely shady dealings calling the cops was a good move.

It does sound a bit dodgy, it might have been stolen, so if there was a burglary recently, the police have a suspect.

You did the right thing in my eyes. I'm not sure I would have done it myself, but I would certainly wished I'd done it afterwards. Good call, that sounded pretty shady indeed.

I've honestly benefitted from electrician surplus (but I knew the guy personally) and have 5 or so speakers, and a TV for free from an old job he did.

But I wouldn't buy that stuff out of the back of the van, seems like he was dumping hot stuff to get a quick profit.

Sounds really, really, sketchy. I think you made the right move. If he's not doing anything wrong, then there's no harm down. Otherwise something bad is stopped.

He could have been doing something illegal.

Its part of their jobs to check things out.

Just leaving it be wouldn't be doing anything at all.

Sounds dodgey to me. I would say that he probably wasn't even a delivery man. And aren't these packages usually packaged? How would he know how much the system was worth?

He is probably trying to sell you a box filled with bricks, and then he goes and sells his "sound system" to the next schmuck who come along.

It's not overreacting. It seemed suspicious, and if it's not, no harm no foul.

I would have done the same thing, in fact I would have took pictures and got his personal number too that way I make sure the cops can find the guy. But I'm just an ass sometimes so thats sounds like a normal thing to do. You shouldn't beat your self up over it, think of it like this, worst case he did steal it and you just helped catch a thief.

It seems clear the guy was on the dodge, but whether or not trying to peddling a sound system presumably obtained illegally is a matter for the police is something that comes down to the individual. Personally, I wouldn't have called the police, but I'm not going to tell someone they 'overreacted' because they did.

i wouldn't have called the police but that doesn't mean you over reacted. have you seen Minority Report? though he didn't commit a crime, doesn't mean he wasn't going to commit one
