Did you pretend to be a video game character as a kid?

Seeing as I'm 30-ish, when I was a kid, I was riding the wave of the Nintendo Home Entertainment System and coin-op arcades glory, so I would often imagine myself as Ryu from Ninja Gaiden, getting furious when my other friends asked me why I wasn't doing hadokens.

I remember it being very rare though, because at the time, games were competing with cartoons like Transformers and GI Joe for my attention, and usually losing out. But every once in a while, when I got the urge to throw a ninja star or swing a katana, I always envisioned myself as Ryu Hayabusa.

I'm interested to see what various ages (especially the younger Escapists) pretended to be video game characters as kids, so fire away!

They still do except now it's called "cosplaying."
Yeah, that's why I added the 'as a kid part'. And, I knew it was gonna happen anyway.

But, since you've got an awesome avatar of Plinkett.... I'll allow it.

I'm nineteen and I still pretend I'm a video game character from time to time. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I don't cosplay though. That's just silly. : P

Same. It's the great thing about the immersion of videogames. You often end up feeling like the character, and pretending to be him for a little while isn't far off.

I feel the exact opposite.

Yeah, I did, and I still do. Random school shit makes me feel like Brotagonist and Kanji rolled into one, and random tedious tasks become Bully minigames. Fighting makes me feel like Steve Fox, and suplexing people makes me feel like Travis Touchdown, complete with moe anime collection.

I guess in today's world of hyper realistic video games and computers and interwebs and cellphones with interwebs and txting and memes, kids don't just go out and play and pretend anymore. That must be why cosplay numbers are on the rise.... it's those kids, as teens and young adults, going "Oh shizzle! My Childhoodizzle!! I missed it-izzle! Time to play catchupizzle!"

All the time, still, at 19, because I'm a crazy person. I was actually more interested in pretending I was an anime character though. Ah, memories of doing Kamehameha's and talking like Dan Green while playing card games, oh and the stick fights I had with trees trying to mimic the attacks of Himura Kenshin.

I couldn't find a character that I truly wanted to be like. So I guess the answer is no. The closest I got was Zidane Tribal. So awesome.

As a kid, I did that AAAAAALL the freakin time. I had so many favourites, I'd change it up every day (one day as mewtwo, another as knuckles, another as sonic...)

Now though...I can't. Not on a daily basis, anyway. It just doesn't feel right. I do sometimes think about what some of my favorite characters would say about things I'm thinking about though.

but I have to say, Cosplaying at conventions is pretty fun. I just did my first cosplay last week at the Montreal anime convention (otakuthon). Went as a team rocket grunt. And it was FUN.

Playing Ocarina of Time for my entire childhood, Link is the reason I swim on my side.
Oh my gosh, you did that too? ...Ok, granted, I stuck mostly with my typical breaststroke swimming technique, but I tried out link's method a few times.

Ever played Jak 2?

You know the way Dark Jak moved and attacked?

Yeah. I did that around my schoolyard.

Hey, same here! Just a word of advice; don't try to imitate the moves the characters from Tekken do. You will look silly.
