Today I bought Demon's Souls, so you all know where this is coming from.

Previous to today, I couldn't stand dying in games. Deaths made me rage. I don't know why, but the inconvenience of death really aggravated me. After getting my ass kicked by Demon's Souls for three hours (partly because I can't figure out how to teach my character magic), instead of me just storming out of the room or popping in another disc like I usually do, each death made me that much more motivated to keep going.

This is the opposite of how I reacted when Battlefield: Bad Company 2's campaign killed me time and time again, or when I played Uncharted 2 on hard, or when I kept dying in Killzone 2. Those times I just quit. I'm mystified as to how Demon's Souls has kept me going rather than driven me off.

So I was wondering if you Escapees had had similar experiences: with one game frustrating you to no end, while another kills you often yet you love it.

From what I understand Demon Souls is that sexy dominatrix that - even though you don't like what she's doing to you - you just can't say no to.

As for keep playing... even after frustrations... nah, I can't think of anything special. I'll say Steam counts since it's being a ***** about downloading the Witcher. I don't know if it's their servers or what, but since everything else is loading just fine I'm inclined to say it's Steam's fault.

I mean, come on! It's 3 AM Central, who else is downloading at this hour?

You could just download it from a torrent, since you bought the game it's legal. That's what I did since I bought The Witcher before Enhanced Edition came out, and since Enhanced Edition is free to everyone who owns the regular edition too, it's totally fine, it just saves me time when installing from the image rather than installing from the disc and downloading the Enhanced Edition patch.

Also, I can't remember a game where frustration motivated me to keep playing. Sometimes I'm just motivated to make the bastard who killed me pay, but that's more about which mindset I'm in than the game.

I would but I have no idea which torrent is better. I haven't used one in a year, and even then it was once or twice for free to play MMOs. I'd go to sleep, but it keeps pausing on its own. Plus it's already 80% and to quit now is to show it that it won. I curse myself for being such a prideful, stubborn fool.

What started this mess is probably when I had a bad run in during the sale which it slowed down and would sign me out and whole bunch of stuff would happen. Like it said my username didn't exist when I tried to retrieve my password - auto signing has made me forget - it set me up as TheShrabgrop which was a fictional creature I created that I never used as a username before. It also said that username doesn't exist.

Long story short, I paused the download, closed out and restarted. Needless to say, I was not amused as I was getting a sweet 2 MB a second before all of this nonsense. Now I just get intermittent failure.

EDIT: Looks like I solved my problem, just had to change the location of where I download from.

This happens to me a lot. I respawn angry and kill a whole lot of shit.
At least until I decide the game is unfair and can't be beaten. That's only happened once though.

Ps. Is Demon Souls worth getting? I've been on the edge of buying it since it came out.

I haven't gotten very far in the game as of yet, but so far it's been great. I recommend it, especially because you can get it for $35.

Demon's Souls is awesome for the first few hours. Then it just gets really boring and repetitive. The story isn't engaging enough to keep me interested and the combat, while challenging, isn't very interesting either. I think I played it for about a week anyway, though. It really did make me want to finish it, but I still gave up and mailed it back to Gamefly.

I really don't get that mad when I die a lot (which is sort of rare in newer games anyway), but I grew up on the NES when shit was impossible anyway.

Nah, turned out I just had to change the choice of location for downloading. So it was Steam after all. I don't know what it did, but it worked perfectly fine on its earlier location until whatever happened, then I changed the location and WHABAM! I'm getting 2 MB a second again.

Also It's 4 AM Central, I'm grumpy and tired. I can make rash generalizations if I want to.

EDIT: Huzzah! It has completed its installation! Bed time!

Prototype was my "ragequit after every other death" game. It gets really annoying about halfway through the story, as enemies get more and more bloodthirsty, while the character's power increases rather slowly.
And on the other side of the barricades, Champions Online makes throwing my glass cannon paper nuke character at the enemies until they drown under the bits of his charred body really really FUN.

It's an RPG spiritual successor of Severance: Blade of Darkness with magic. Very old-school, very unforgiving, very varied. Might be worth checking out if you like this genre.
