my probelm is that you can end up in one path without specifically wanting it (I played out emi's path while wanting to get with Hanako)

if you want to go with Hanako then DONT put in extra effort when you go running for the first time with emi...I think thsi will lead you to lilly...go to the libary when it becomes an option and you should be good (and be nice to lily)
From my experience, all the paths are actually quite logical in their outcome, but if one is playing through it the first time, then obviously we wouldn't have any knowledge of the outcome. For example, in the case of Shizune vs Lilly, of course siding with one girl will cause her to think 'less' of you, and it reflects on Hisao himself that the "personality" you choose for him is what lead him to that choice. Even your choice of Hisao's introduction to the class affects his overall disposition in a subtle way, whether he'll be somewhat confident, or reserved.

On Emi's path, it's actually quite "logical" for Hisao to take it easy considering his heart condition, and you'd only really choose the "run harder" option if you're aiming for Emi's route.

It basically works that all the choices you make in act are are shaping Hisao into the kind of person that will like a particular girl in question, which means the more interested or favorable he is to a girl or spend more time with them, then obviously that's who they'll want to stick with.

That said, yes there are choices that seem to be put there just for the hell of it, like one choice regarding Kenji in Lilly's path, where choosing either leads to the same thing and doesn't affect the story as a whole.

i had a feeling i'd need to be in Lilly's good graces in order to be around hanako. haven't met an emi yet, but i'll keep that in mind.

this apparent common acknowledgement of the misleading effects certain choices have is either an error on fourleaf studios part or this is supposed to me the games way of saying "women are difficult", which is another error. on top of that, fuck shizune.
I just want to say I'm really glad you gave it a solid chance. Even if it's not exactly what you expected, you're giving it an honest chance and that's more than a lot of people have done.

I really respect that.
let's get one thing straight....skyrim currently isn't an option given that it's 12:30, the xbox is in my brother's room, they're asleep, and i don't want to pay full price again through steam to have the convience of playing on my laptop...that and i was kind interesting in this game, didn't have much else to do anyway and this seems like a pretty nice way to pass time. i just hope this thing speeds up after act 1, i mean god dammit this character development phase is just dragging itself out and it forces itself in some parts and doesn't follow through in other, but i keep going! why!?

Man I really wanna play this game, but there's something wrong with my computer and it won't let me install games or any kind of software.
This might sound incredibly silly, but are you running programs as admin? Most install files require you to do that to work.

Well, "playing" VN's is pretty much reading a book: you flip a lot of pages and read, only you click here instead of physically flip it. How fast you go through Act 1 (and all subsequent acts) depends on how fast you read. I finished my first playthrough of Act 1 in around 2 hours, while others have supposedly finished in either half the time or twice as long. Besides, the character development phase is essential to the integrity of the story as a whole.

EDIT:nevermind! she ran into me a loooong time ago, i'm just meeting her on the track field. time to nut up, or shut up.
I'm glad to see that if anything, this game has convinced a few people to try something they otherwise never would have. Do tell us what you think when you've finished. I'm also glad to see all the love for Hanako as she's my favorite girl in the game.

If I'd hazard a guess, it's for the same reasons I stay up until dawn reading a good book (which I only do on the weekends now!).

You want to find out what happens next.

OH GOD FUCKING DAMMIT

i'm 3 and a half hours in and i'm at the stupid shower room scene with kenji where he asks for money. this would been a PERFECT time to prompt a desicion; give kenji money or don't. kenji is a completely pointless character, fails at being comedic relief assuming that's his purpose being in this game, he brings nothing to the plot, is uninteresting if not ANNOYING, and worst of all, I don't have the option to beat him to death. it's the jar jar binks effect: there's an annoying character that the director thought would be a nice idea, but the director has also fucked up on several other occasion and this being his biggest.

i can only tell myself 'patience'

I'm actually of the opinion that Kenji is there only to provide you with the Act 1 Bad Ending if you fail to "open" a path for the other girls

In which you end up on a "MANLY picnic" on the roof, get drunk and accidentally kill yourself

That said, past Act 2 for any route Kenji becomes less prevalent and at rare times even considerate.

Kenji is comic relief in an otherwise serious story, dude. He's one of the more endearing characters in the game. But really, like I said earlier to someone else:

This isn't a video game and shouldn't be thought of nor judged like one. It is a Visual Novel. A different genre entirely and one that is severely under-appreciated due to it's more 'adult' audience.
Did I just quote myself? Kinda weird, this hasn't happened before.

That aside, having too many choices in the game could have ended up in a major clusterf-ck and would have significantly drawn out the development time. Considering it was developed by a group of amateurs for almost moot and presented to the public for free, it has more than enough choice.

To avoid getting Emi, say maybe when you're told to exercise. Because far as I can tell you get insta-locked into her no matter what if you dont

How can you not like Kenji?

Or are you one of those mind reading feminist spies?

Actually no, if you made the right decisions beforehand and take it easy on the track you can open Rin's path. Maybe it's even required.

Not adding much to the convo here, but the game is great. I think it added experiences to my life and im happy i got to play it. Some of the stories were so heart touching i cried irl. No joking around or trolling i was that touched. Any game that can make me do that.. is an A++ in my book.

IMO play though it once and see who you get, stick with it, dont spam save files just sit back and injoy the game. I got Lily on my first time though and i think i like her the most. ANYWAYS once your done with that heres a cheat sheet to get into the other girls / boy story. Injoy.

It feels so good to spread around these kind of links on The Escapist, for once.

Interesting idea. Whether or not its seen as crass or legitimate will no doubt be determined by the degree of sensitivity with which the developers handle the issue of disability.

ive never played a sim any deeper than harvest moon/rune factory, so at free.99 this game sounds very compelling to try out.

It's as tasteful as it could possibly get.
Which is even more amazing considering it's developed by people from 4chan.

And really, the way the story came to be, only supports this. It was started out pretty much as: "LOL, this would really make an unique VN setting. So, how do we start making it?" - And nothing more. Just as it wasn't a bunch of fetishists deciding to write a porn, it was neither condescending ableist activists deciding to send a message, just some guys wanting to tell a non-cliche romance story.
And it has a really story sure sure.. it is that type of game.. But these girls at least have back story that makes you think like "Mmm okay I can play another hour to see what she is hiding"

I am a sucker for a good story and these girls have a good backstory. I did end up running out of the first playthrough. With Emi, you know running girl, she has yes an interresting backstory to say the least.

Yeah, that was a downer. I was aiming for the Rin route (out of curiosity more than anything else. I'll play again later, this time aiming for Emi, who I think makes more sense for HIsao, given his character). Unfortunately, one wrong choice led me to that bad ending. I had to search online for a graph that showed me where I'd gone wrong. All I can say is the developers did good making that 'skip' option.
