Hell of a Summer - 6/10

Hell of a Summer is a slasher comedy that's just decent and fun enough. It's your sorta standard horror setup at a camp (but before the kids get there). Just enough of the jokes land to keep you amused. Anyone coming for gore better turn around because the gore and kills are really weak. But yeah, not really much to talk about, not a horrible way to spend 90 minutes.

Despite my rating, cannot recommend this film without legitimate trigger warnings. If you've been in an abusive relationship, this movie will almost certainly set something off.

The only thing my brother and I like about this movie is the song "Savages". That's it.

The War of the Rohirrim.

Ok, so people had complaints about The Lord of the Rings films until The Hobbit films came out, at which point the LotR films were flawless classics and they complained about The Hobbit instead. Following this logic, I think I'm not allowed to complain about The Hobbit ever again, cause this film is just bad.

It starts out with the main character, who is a princess, but is a super special princess because she's not like the other girls, she's like a boy, but her father can't see that and...and it just doesn't get better.

Boo! BOOOOO!

Jackie Chan's First Strike aka Police Story 4 - It's the one with the ladder. I honestly like this one more than Supercop. The humor is all on point with the non fight scenes and fight scenes, it's lovely distilled action he is known for. See this fucking movie.

Monkey Man (2024)

That Dev Patel always seemed like such a nice chap. And yet here he is, tautly muscled and tearing shit up in a fictional pseudo-Mumbai with some serious brutality. It is also his directorial debut. Monkey Man is a graphically violent action movie where Patel plays a basically unnamed protagonist who by night takes money to lose in an underground fighting den where he performs in a monkey mask. By day, he attempts to insinuate himself into a drugs and prostitutes club used by the city's elite in order to gain revenge for a past crime some of them have committed.

Although set in India, it is largely English language. It has a strong sociopolitical theme around the exploitation of the poor and lower caste from a web of corrupt corporate, religious and political elites. Aspects of it could also be described by certain quarters as "woke". Apparently, it still does not have certification to be released in India. Whilst its violent nature is cited as a reason, I suspect a major issue is that the corrupt elites under attack in the film look a lot like India's ruling party, the BJP. Despite these themes, this is not a complex story: it's a revenge flick, even if the vigilanteism is from the direction of social justice.

However, what everyone really wants to know about their action movies is whether the action is good. And yes, yes it is. Not with distinction maybe, but certainly with merit.

Currently in Japan, and after a nice bath in onsen, I told myself why not watch a Japanese Movie? So I finally got around to watch Godzilla Minus One.... on my crappy travel laptop..... with shitty sound output; Do you guys see where I'm going with this?

I mean dont get me wrong, it’s an amazing movie, but I really wish I saw this in theaters. Because clearly there were many scenes where sound effects played key roles, and my crappy laptop can’t capture that.

Not to mention the pictures quality wasn’t too great either

RIP. I still haven't watched that one, for some reason I just can't energise myself to do so.

Also trust me, It is way better than any of the Western-made Godzilla films. It's not a B-tier summer blockbuster. They made Godzilla actually terrifying without hyper-action sequences. Plus, human characters actually written well!

Sucks about the sound and resolution of my crap laptop though

Borderlands

I guess the art department got it right, mostly. I'm not sure why you would cast any of these people in it though.

Every Borderlands game has been about shooting everything while people harangue you over a walkie talkie. Troilus and Cressida it is not. But if anything that should give you the freedom to go anywhere you want with a film adaptation. Instead they went with some Big Mac plot about ragtag heroes and their merry chosen one. But there's no need for any of these people to band together, no clear threat against them, and their main mission of finding Three Keys is so lazy that not only do they start out with one of them, they later discover they had the third one with them all along too.

To Power Ranger fans who dislike this film...I get it. Really, I do.

I would be tempted to say that judging by its reputation, the film was less funny and smart as your review of it; except that judging by it's reputation, that could also be damning your review with faint praise.
