version with Linda Hamilton in old age make-up - Who the hell thought that was ever a good idea to release?
It's an alternate ending that's non canon anyway. I didn't even know that ending existed until DVD. I was still taking that alternate ending over T3 and all the other sequels, aside from Salvation.

I watch Sonic 3 again. Still an S rank movie and still the best movie of the trilogy.

I know, but there are officially released versions of the movie out there that have that ending. The fact that that even happened, and that some people who never watched T2 may see that version for their first viewing, is tragic.

Not that much of a tragedy to me. It's proven you can do much worse than the original planned ending of T2. The Internet exists, so now those regions can see the true theatrical ending by going to YouTube.

This is a sci-fi thriller by David Cronenberg about a game developer and a security guard having to go on the run after an assassination attempt on the latter, and having to enter a virtual reality world to make sure the game dev's latest genius project hasn't been harmed. This is an odd one out in Cronenberg's filmography, and I've seen it rarely talked about seeing it was a huge flop even with its meager $15 million budget. But undeservedly so IMO. For a premise sounding as silly as that (and it is very silly) it's a surprisingly engaging and interesting look at what the future of video games might have been imagined as in the late 90s. It is very strange and out there and at times hard to parse, but it wraps up in a suprisingly satisfying way, and it's got some surprising similarities with The Matrix and Inception in that the characters are entering a simulated world, and then enter a simulated world within that world and so on.

The biggest hurdle for people to clear about this film will be the hopelessly dated ideas about video games and virtual reality. This came out on the tail end of the 90s cyberpunk trend, so it's not quite as dated as something like Johnny Mnemonic, but it's still got some depictions and ideas that are hilariously dated after seeing a quarter century of gaming history progress since. It's best to put the way the characters use the word "game" out of your head while watching this, and instead think of it as them promoting revolutionary VR experiences. Considering just how wrong this easily could have gone with overt CGI the visuals hold up remarkably well, being often times reminiscient of Videodrome with its emphasis on grunginess and filth.

This movie is weird. Games are not played with TVs and controllers, but instead by plugging a fleshy pseudo-creature directly into your body with an umbilical cord. The movie seems to take place "5 seconds in the future" with seeming implications of nuclear fallout and severe climate change. For a lot of the movie it's hard to tell what the plot of the movie is even moving towards, and that's the point. You're pretty much thrown into the deep end and are expected to keep up with all the strangeness. For me it worked, but I can see people also completely disengaging from the movie and seeing it as pointless and meandering. Despite its dated ideas about gaming, it's still got some interesting thematic rumination on losing one's grip on reality, disconnect between player and player character, and the devastating effect that can have on people's lives. Towards the end the movie gets deliberately confusing about what level of reality the characters are operating on, which is a crucial part of the movie's ending. I liked it overall.

My favorite thing about eXistenZ was the chicken bone gun.

I also liked it because it meant David Lynch and David Cronenberg finally shared an actor, which at the time was terribly important to me.

Otherwise I just remember it as a lesser Videodrome.

Birthright (A Herença)

Brazilian horror movie made by someone who is clearly a fan of Ari Aster, to a fault. A man and his boyfriend travel from Berlin to Brazil after his mother passes away. They're greeted by his aunts at the old family home, which looks like Miss Havisham's lair in the Amazon, and are coaxed to stay over and wander around a haunted house at night. The aunts dote on their nephew and keep talking about family and belonging but are none too fond of the boyfriend. You can safely figure out what's going on and how everything will play out by the end, although there's a charming (and very cheesy) twist that lands the plot firmly in B-movie territory.

Black Widow - 8/10

The best Black Widow movie ever made was made in like 1996 and its called The Long Kiss Goodnight. With that out of the way, I still think this is a pretty solid movie. Like a lot of Marvel films, its helped a lot by the chemistry of the cast. The MVP though is Florence Pugh as Yelana; she's amazingly good.

I like EXistenZ fine and I like Naked Lunch fine and probably enjoyed Crimes of the Future more than most people but honestly, I don't think Cronenberg ever made anything remotely as good as Videodrome again. Not that that's something to be ashamed of, Videodrome is a hell of a movie.

Outside of Parasite (that I didn't care for the ending), I don't really like any of the movies that Bong Joon Ho has made that I've seen. It seems like he write movies backwards much like in the sense that when people first come to a conclusion on something and then only look for the facts that support that conclusion. Bong Joon Ho seems to make movies where he wants to convey a message first and then writes a plot/characters with the sole purpose of conveying that message. Whereas I feel a movie should be great on it's own with just the plot and characters taken completely straight, and there should naturally be a message/theme of that comes out of it. It's like The Matrix could be enjoyed completely as a straight sci-fi kung-fu movie, obviously it says a lot more, but the characters and plot aren't solely there for the service of the message/theme.

Havoc - It lives up to the title! It's basically The Raid meets Run All Night. Which makes sense, because the the director of the former, Gareth Evans, wrote and direct this masterpiece! This is Evans at his peak again. The story simple: Tom Hardy plays a corrupt cop who has to save a corrupt mayor's son, for a crime and murder of a triad mob boss who the son and his girlfriend didn't kill. People said there's not enough story, but there is and it works in the movie's favor. It knows how to pace itself, but once the film gets going, it doesn't stop. There is tension in this movie, and that's what I love about Evans film works. The man can do suspense and tension, whether it be action or horror.

See this movie, if you're into his works, a fan of action films, or simple curiosity if you're new to his works. Do note, he is known for ultra violent action, and the people in this movie get fucked up! Tom Hardy is a beast in this film, but the two people he's reluctantly protecting don't sit on the sidelines either. Especially the girl, Mia. She knows how to kick ass.

Memories of Murder, 7/10

This is a police procedural drama by Bong Joon-Ho (of Parasite fame) about a series of rape murders taking place in a rural Korean town in the 80s and the small group of local cops trying to solve them. It's based on real events, but I don't know how closely. It's a bit of an odd film. I'm almost tempted to call it a tragic comedy, because a lot of it is the cops just bumbling around and fucking up time and time again. It almost feels like a more grounded, way darker Naked Gun or Hot Fuzz with how completely inept and downright buffoonish the cops are: at one point they decide that, because they couldn't find any pubic hair at a crime scene, the culprit must be shaved down below. Thus one of the cops starts hitting the local bathhouses and just looking at other men's privates. Yet at the same time it's also presented very somberly and dramatically (and let's face it, making a movie about rape murder funny is pretty fucking hard), the color grading is muted and drab, and the score is very dramatic and very good. So it's something of a tonal mix.

I still enjoyed it a lot. Its structure is rather unusual for a crime investigation movie, so I was always interested to see where it was going. At one point my head started coming up with theories on who the actual culprit is, because it's kept so hidden and vague for the whole movie. The acting, despite the at times wildly swinging tone, is all really good and never feels inappropriate for the scenes.

Gentlemen, how kismet you should both mention Shang-Chi; for that is the Marvel movie I'm up to with my kids.

So anyway, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - 10/10

No I'm not stoned, no I don't care that it isn't the same kind of bone crunching action as proper Hong Kong action movies or the hyper stylisation of mainland Chinese wuxia. But it does each of them just fine, and its got good cast chemistry and Simu Liu in particular bounces of Awkwafina - I count myself among the seventy-seven people on planet Earth who likes her comedic sensibilities - incredibly well.

Loved it, I want the fucking sequel.
